It was just confirmed on the Shotokan yahoo group. Sensei Enoeda died of stomach cancer on Saturday.

That's quite true. my own family had the same iopinion, and it took me a year of talking, begging, and pleading to be allowed to join. They fully expected me to not like it and quit. They're still waiting 22 years later.

Two person drills are a good way to begin. i have to admit I like the JKA's philosphy of starting wiht 5 step adn then progressing through 3 and 1 step sparrting before beginning free sparring. It tends to prevent the flailing that is common in many schools. Simple drills: Opponents in left foot forward kamae. Alternate mae-geri, gyaku-zuki back adn forth (most basic). Opponents as before. Attacker skip forward mae ashi mawashi geri, rear foot mawashi geri, uraken uchi, haito uchi, then the other side repeats. Opponnents as before. Attacker yori ashis in with gyaku zuki. Defender sidesteps and counters with same technique, back and forth. Feel free to add on everybody.

I would caution a beginner against using 'karate' per se in an emergency. It is designed to be learned slowly, so that by the time one developes effcient techniques one is less likely to be tempted to find situations to use them in. My advice for headlocks is avoid people who would put you in one.

in a good dojo, Karate training will instill respect and compassion for others, both juniors and seniors. It will also instill attetnion to detail, which is always helpful. It will also hopefully instill a willingness to "walk away" from conflict rather than be bellicose. In a bad Dojo, people will learn to pound on those weaker than themselves.

If you are asking us these questions, should you be testing?

I sort of was hoping someone knew why it folded.

What happened to Carbenecho.com? I disliked their forum, which was an arguement site, not discussion site, but they had some good Shotokan Kata videos,a dn the only aikido waza videos I've found.

You are correct, it isn't possible to pass.

Sorry, having spent a week grading undergraduate papers (enjoy spring break, it dissapears when you go to grad school!) this nonsense has spread to academic work, and is laziness. I am interested in what this person had to say, but if he can post in English, French, German, Latin (medieval or classical) or even Czech I might be able to understand him, but not Martian or whatever that was!

Eh? Do you speak English? I realise that it has become trendy to mis-spelll, but this is a bit silly, don't you think?

interstingly enough, in January we were all discussing our "Karate Resolutioins, " and many people said they were going to work on shorter stancing.

Are there any "identifying marks" to teh style? I know they have a rather unique method of oi-ziuki, but that'sa bout all. Do they do the usual 54 Shito-Ryu kata?

Interesting that this thread surfaced now. I was playing on line today and found a video clip taken during someone's sandan test of a young lady doing Gojushiho-Sho,and her stances are so low that she can barely do the renzokuzuki, mae-geri, gyaku-zuki combination toward the begining. Rather than retract her mae-geri she sort of falls forward, due to being so immobile. I find the whole thing interesting (and have been guilty of teh same thing myself in teh past) considering that now that I'm practiicing adn Okinawan style I find myself consciously trying NOT to haev really low stances.

Is there a difference betweem Tani-Ha Shito Ryu and Shukokai?

Go with Yoshinkan Aikido. It will include atemi. If you get a chance, read Robert Twigger's book "Angry White Pajamas," Its about a lazy, layabout English ex-pat in Tokyo who stumbles into the riot police class at the Yoshinkan Hombu, and his adventures therein. Its hilarious, but also thought-provoking. I have to admit I identified with one of his roomamtes, "Fat Frank," the womanizing Iranian English teacher. -
Does anyone ever learn the "whole art?" Funakoshi stated shortly prior to his death that he was finally begining to understand Choku Zuki.

From my understanding, Shudokan is Shuri-Te style. It's founder was Toyama, Kanken. It has some affiliation and connections to Shuri Palace style martial arts (Motobu-Ryu), but I'm not overly sure what they are. I do know that they teach kyusho to upper Dan grades. Hope this helps.

Perhaps we should have a 'humour' icon?

Why some MA people get beat in real fights

I think it is often amatter of whether or not the person has the will to fight when attacked. -
