  1. I was in about the same boat as you a couple of months ago.I have played hockey since I was 6(30 now) and I have just recently taken up kickboxing. The workout is awesome and our instructors seem to keep it interesting.I'm not sure if it was from all of the skating or what but I seem to be able to kick quite hard,or so the padholders tell me.The only thing I have to be careful with is my feet and ankles,I think I will invest in a good set of ankle supports and maybe that would be something for you to think about.Besides that I wish I had started this 20yrs ago.
  2. Yes I have tried this and it destroys your abs.It really seems to hit everywhere.
  3. I am a bit out of shape right now but I have kicked up my training since starting kickboxing.I have played competitive sports my whole life and I do understand the commitment and dedication it takes to compete.
  4. Thanks everyone for your input and knowledge.I attended a karate tournament a week ago and I wasn't sure if that was what I was looking for.I attended my first kickboxing class last night and loved it.I wish I had done this stuff a long time ago but better late than never I guess.
  5. I had knee surgery when I was 17 from a hockey injury,I was training 2 weeks later. So don't worry about a long lay-up if it is just a little bit of torn cartilage like mine was. Also just lately my other knee started aching and I started taking glucosamine and condroitin and it really works.I haven't had an ache in my joints since.I know it's kind of frustrating but I guess it's just another one of lifes little hurdles.Best of luck.
  6. I have battled my weight my whole life, sometimes with little success.I have found for myself that 2-3 days a week of weight training really boosted my fat loss.I tried to keep it intense with 30sec. breaks between sets.Circuit training and super-sets worked best for me and took up the least amt. of time.Like everyone else said be patient and make sure to keep it FUN.
  7. You could also try doing planks.Get into the push-up position then rest on your elbows.Try to hold this position for 30 seconds, then to finish off dip your hips down to the floor for 10 reps.Do three sets of these. It will strengthen your core and hips.
  8. thanks for all that.I had pretty much ruled out wado because the school in my area seems to be geared more toward kids, which is excellent too. Also the pics I have seen of the chito class seem to be mostly middle aged.Is ther any reason for that or just a coincidence.
  9. Hello,I am new to this site and I'm sorry if this sounds repetitive.I am 30 years old and I am looking for a karate style to study. My 3 options are chito-ryu,goju-ryu and wado-ryu.I was wondering which, if any, of these styles include roundhouse kicks in their teachings.I would also like to know which of these is most physically demanding(I love a good sweat). And my last question is,which of these styles is more suited to competition(sparring)?I would greatly appreciate any feedback.
