  1. Awesome contribution and time commitment Alex... Keep up the great work
  2. We advertise on FB, however I do not think we're active enough on it (we post every now & again and advertise twice a year) to get the best out of it. We do get some interest - our current advert has reached over 1k people with over 50 engagements (likes, shares, comments) over the past 3 days... And we've had a few people try us out, however with quite alot of different MA associations & arts as well as different fitness programs about, it is very competitive in our area. Anyway, going back to FB advertising... The good thing with analytics and targeting is that you can target a type of client (male, female), age (13 upwards or just a subset) and the area (eg local area +20km)... So you can really target the type of student you want (eg ladies only classes, self-defence class, family class, etc)
  3. Hi @Jetrail Welcome to the group, hope that you enjoy it here -Ken
  4. I have to say that while there are alot of similarities, there are alot of differences as well... Yes TSD does have alot of it's roots in Shotokan karate (after all Gichin Funakoshi -> Lee Won Kuk -> Hwang Kee) added to that there are only so many ways to punch and kick, but there are differences as well... The use of hips, kicks, stances, movements are more circular, the and the forms (some forms have subtle changes, some are quite different) to name a few... (and of course the language)... This is just my view based on studying both arts over the years...
  5. Thanks mate... We're an independent TSD association, the KTSDA, but we're affiliated with the WDSDU
  6. I can only echo what has been said already
  7. Thanks all, gaining it is still sinking in... Half of me is already looking forward to studying for my 4th Dan (even though it's years away), the other half of me is thinking "what a 3rd Dan??? You've got to be kidding" haha
  8. Haven't posted in a while, been very busy with training, work and studies... Anyway, would just like to share my success over the weekend... Passed my 3rd Dan grading in Tang Soo Do. Then we were award our Kyo Sa Nim (instructor) status, we were being assessed for a while, but weren't told about it as our Instructor wanted it to be a surprise... Still recovering from it, but enjoyed the experience... Now just looking forward to getting back to training 🥋😃
  9. 2nd Dan Tang Soo Do 2nd Dan Karate
  10. I agree, lots of factors have to be taken into consideration when labelling a martial art. Even the Australian art which has a bad rap, which is a combination of Shotokan and Goju Ryu in theory is a very good art - however it's the implementation & teaching of it that brings it down*. Let's face it, there are only so many different ways to punch, kick, throw, lock, etc... How it's taught, how it's interpreted, how it's learnt as well as the individual student him/herself. Show the same thing to two different people and they'll take away different things. Get two different instructors to teach the same thing, the students will learn different things. *I talk out of my own experience - I'm not knocking any martial arts here.
  11. Great work by the instructor and great spirit shown by the kid
  12. Belated happy birthday mate
  13. I don't see an issue with that, just make sure that you use any protective equipment as directed by your association and make sure that you get checked out by your GP/doctor
  14. Now a days, it's the camaraderie, the social aspects and health benefits
  15. I know this thread is few months old In my opinion, yes and no to the martial arts being "regulated". I wouldn't want to see the Government step in to regulate the MA fully, saying what should or shouldn't be taught. Or to the extent of the Kukkiwon... However laying down a foundation, a minimum level of protection for both instructor/club/association and student, as such like: 1. A Valid CRB/DBS check (not sure what this is in other countries) to see if the instructor is actually barred from working with children (child protection) 2. A minimum level of insurance 3. So sort of teaching/coaching/instructors certificate (not sure of the logistics on this one; maybe association, NGB or 3rd party issued). 4. A clear pricing structure But this is just my opinion
  16. When I practiced Shotokan regularly, both... I use to train with two different associations, once association came out of Kanazawa sensei's group - this one we did the "sweeping" (as a grab), the other association came out of the JKA - this one opened the hand (as a strike). With Tang Soo Do, we just do the punch in the form. However when we practice the applications we do both types, depending on which application we apply -Ken
  17. For me, while I love every form that we do, it's got to be Empi/Wanshu. It was my main grading kata (Empi) for my 1st Dan in Shotokan karate 14 years ago and it was my grading form (Wanshu) when I went for my 2nd Dan in Tang Soo Do. And I'm still learning the form now, not just the movements but the different applications: strikes, kicks, throws, locks, etc...
  18. Thanks guys, I was really lucky as I was put on another course of prednisolone and a trial of pregabalin about 1 month before the grading and that helped a lot. Got a lot of training to do before my 3rd Dan, haha. Here's a virtual drink to that
  19. Haven't been around for a while, but just wanted to say that I passed my 2nd Dan grading in Tang Soo Do earlier in the month. Very nervous, as I haven't been well the last few years and my grading was pushed back from last year (it was agreed at the time)... Did the following: 1. Basics 2. One step sparring (not formal) 3. Sparring 4. Knife defences 5. Forms (any previous forms that my instructor asked), as well as Naihanchi Cho Dan and Sam Dam (ee Dan was left out which threw me for a minute) 5a. My favorite form: Wanshu (plus applications of it - formal, as well as what is known as "Kiso kumite" in Japanese karate - structured sparring drawn from a kata). 6. Breaking (mulitple board breaking on stand as well as combination breaking). I think that's everything on the day, however not 100% sure as the day went like a blur... (Added to that we're also assessed in the class, we're not invited to grade if we're not ready). The bruises are only starting to fade now (it's been 1 1/2 weeks), and my right arm is still sore. But the smile on my face is it still there. Now working towards my 3rd Dan -Ken
  20. Happy birthday mate
  21. Hi Hawkmoon, I see that you're based in MK, did you see it in 4DX, IMAX or standard seating? -Ken
  22. Sometimes movies will post the funniest/best bits in the trailers and you get disappointed when you see the movie. This was not the case with Deadpool
