  1. The Only Jump I have in my syllabus is from a Tobi Ushiro Mawashi Geri, this found in the Shodan Kata. I remember my Wado days, thinking what is the practicality of this technique for Pinan Godan, And the application didn't include the jump! To me Jumping techniques are to increase staminar and balance as Only Jean-Claude Van Dame and the likes would perform a jump on camera during a street confrontation.
  2. And if you want a change from Kyokushin but still want the Knock Down karate Kumite, there's always Ashihara karate, Enshin Karate and Daido Juku Kudo (MMA in a Gi) OSU
  3. Kyokushin and Oyama Sensei (Choi Baedal his Korean Name), are one, the book has been written for the masses and is an Instructional book ONLY!!!! If you read any Philosophical books by Oyama Sensei, you will see a different Concept of the karate and the kata.
  4. Not too sure what the "rules" are for Kumite? In my Dojo, the Lower Grade controls the pace. If he likes to go full on, just stop and ask him directly, in front of the class, "why are you going in more that what has been directed?" Your Sensei SHOULD be aware of who's sparing and the content of it, I would, if you don't get any joy with him, speak to Sensei.

    Senpai?

Pinoy_1 are you Filipino? I am in contact with a few Kyokushin karateka from Manila and other areas. Not too sure how it goes in other Dojo's but in mine Only Adult grades and Blackbelts are considered higher. Junior grades (thats any grade younger than 16 would be considered as Kohai) In my Dojo I have a Junior 1st Kyu who stands in a lower position than the Adult White belts until he gets his Junior 1st Dan, then he stands with the other Dan grades. OSU!!!!!

    Senpai?

I would say that although some may say that the Sempai/Kohai relationship is within your own Dojo, as you are a representative of your Dojo, it would make your Sensei proud if he learned that one of his students gained a reputation of being polite and honourable. in Kyokushin, Ashihara, Enshin etc anyone of a higher grade is Sempai (upto Sandan) or Sensei (Sandan upwards) etc.
  8. Osu!!! My adult's class is nothing like my kids' class. There is no body conditioning or students full contact sparring in the kids' class. To me knockdown karate is just a different principle of Karate. I've practiced many and its dependant on the individual dojo as opposed to the "style" Although I've never trained harder than I have in a Ashihara, Enshin Kyokushin or Muay Thai school. Osu!!!
  9. If I had to choose between Shotokan and Kyokushin I would definately pick Kyokushin, Osu
  10. Osu phoenixzion. I'm very much in agreement with what you wrote regarding Kata. For the longest time, I looked down on Kata (not having studied karate) and always saw sparring as something much more beneficial. Having recently picked up Kyokushin, I have to say that Kata is the essence of Karate. It's not only fantastic for learning techniques but also for hardening the spirit and I find myself practicing the few I know for hours on my resting days from training. This, for me, is unusual, as I'm training 5 days a week To the OP. I haven't done full contact sparring yet- but did lots of semi contact in my Muay Thai days. I will though (as is inevitable with Kyokushin) and I look forward to it because I seek to push my body to it's limits and go beyond- One of the reasons I love Kyokushin So you went from Muay Thai to Kyokushin? Whick kind of kicking do you prefer? (MT shin kicks vs Kyokushin chambered, instep kicks). Which one do you feel is more applicable for combat? Not too sure who your Kyokushin Sensei is but the "in-step" is only used on the head. In Kyokushin, Ashihara and Enshin karate, the shin is the preferred striking point of the legs. I only teach kicks using the shin for round kicks. It also states this in Human Weapon and in Fight Quest which specified Kyokushin Karate. The good thing about Karate. Based kicks are that ALL kicks start the same way with the knee chambered first so for example from the chambered knee to the front, front kick, side kick or round kick could be applied. OSU!!!
  11. I as an Ashihara karateka understand the concept of Full Contact Sparring. When the Blackbelts spar against each other its fast and you know when you've been hit etc. I know that the lower Kyu grades, when I'm sparring with my Assistant Instructor, are open mouthed and always say they wish they could Spar like us. In my school I always explain that the lower grade controls the pace. If the lower grade wants to be tippy tappy then thats fine, but I advise that the higher grades are not human punchbags, if the lower grade steps it up I expect the higher grade to step it up too. I tend to use sparring with the lower grades as a lesson for them, pointing out things they can or should dop etc. Also I get then to know what it feels like to put combinations together. I am the first person anyone entering my club gets to spar with. I know when it comes to levels of contact, especially in the UK, there are various Insurance issues. Some Insurers will not insure Full Contact schools. Even some NGB's wont take on Full contact schools either. This means that if you get injured in a full contact session, technically neither are insured. Check the small print. I enjoy Full Contact Sparring so much. OSU!!!!
  12. I was told by a Senior Karateka that Enoeda Sensei and Kanazawa Sensei had a LONG history with each other. I was advised they also had a genuine dislike of each other (Note I DO stand to be corrected as I know how "tales" get passed and "enhanced" as they get moved around) I was also advised that the Kumite competitions where they competed against each other were "Full Contact" and they aimed to "hurt" each other. I took the stories with a pinch of salt as I still believe they are both Karateka we can all be proud of. OSU!!!!
  13. Strange really but the opposite is true for Kyokushin in some cases Mas Oyama Sosai, was a Korean immigrant and Kyokushin includes Garyu Kata which is a form from his home town in Korea. Some of the senior Japanese Shihans try to deny any Korean influences into the "Japanese" art. It its shown that Sosai practices Taekkyon and other Korean Boxing arts before moving to Japan. He studied Goju Ryu and Shotokan with some training in Judo. Plus the added influx of Muay Thai techniques too for the ultimate truth karate. I'm not bothered myself where the art is from just to the fact they are honest about its roots and that the art itself is effective. OSU (Without Kyokushin Karate, Ashihara karate would never have evolved).
  14. OSU!!! Found this on the WEB, is it any good? http://www.isshinryu.com/new/index.html thanks Ken
  15. Shotokan Karate: A Precise History by Harry Cook (2nd Edition) Released: August 2009 Guys, I was recommended this book by a Shotokan Yudansha and also advised to attend his seminars Has Anyone read this book or about to and has anyone trained with Shihan Harry Cook. I believe he has a realistic Bunkai to kata and is Yudansha in Shotokan, Wado Ryu and Goju Ryu. All, have you trained with him or aware of his methods and how similar/different are they to Iain Abernathy's Bunkai thanks -------------------- A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes. Osu
  16. I know in my club we have 2 throwing kata and we practice throwing and breakfalling regularly to keep students on top of break falling. I've only been in one Karate club where throws have not been used as part of the training although breakfalling was learned from Jujitsu and Aikido training.
  17. We tend to use Throws specific to Ashihara/Enshin Karate. But I do love De Ashi Harai as well as Tomoe Nage. I also use Muay Thai Throws in my sparring too.
  18. I've wanted to have Interclubs with other Karate schools using Sabaki Rules but they don't wish to use "Thigh kicks" and they're unable to stop bouncing!!! I have a Shukokai BB who now trains with me and some of the take downshe has received in competitons have been proven to be when he was "in the air" on a bounce. He's now becoming accustomed to Knockdown Karate. I also have a ShotoKai BB who enjoys our style of training
  19. I would love to compete in Kata but the kata we practice wouldn't even get to the judging panel. Most Kata Competitions have a specified Kata List for each "Style" none is taken into account for Jissen based Karate like Enshin or Ashihara Karate. Jissen No Kata Sono Ichi would never get a medal but its so effective on the street. Even My Traditional Kata that I teach are not like others my Stances are for reallity not competitions.
  20. I agree the word "Uke" translated from Japanese to english means "to receive". I alway teach my students that the "block" are actually deflections or strikes. We tend to use Mikuri (absorbtion), Tai or Ashi Sabaki (body movement) as a means of prevention of being struck by an opponent, the "uke" is as stated a just a counter. "Gedan Barai" - translated correctly means "Lower Sweep" the same as "Ashi Barai" which means "Foot Sweep" I love the fact that the smallest bone and easiest to break bone in the lower arm is "slammed" into the toughest bone of the Shin (one which is used to break baseball bats) as a "block" Western Boxing, Aikido, Enshin and Ashihara Karate tend to show the more effect "parry" than "hard block" of Traditional/Classical Karate
  21. Snake, that makes perfect sense to me good luck with kyokushin Osu!!!
  22. How many of you practice and use low kicks/thigh kicks in your training and competition? I find it is only the likes of Muay Thai, Kyokushin, Ashihara and Enshin plus other knockdown karate styles use them Most Kick-boxing, Sports/Freestyle Karate, WKA/WKF rules karate schools tend to be Semi-contact and only kick above the waist. Your thoughts please. OSU!!!!
  23. Wow, what a thread, its amazing what you can find with the Search button
