I couldn't listen to it as i was at work and they don't have speakers on this computer I'm using But as you said the meaning was there
-
Please don't hate my obvious answer, well it's obvious to me that I'd use this answer, seeing I'm a staunch proponent of it... Kata. After all, Kata is imbued with Tai Sabaki. Totally agree Kata is full of body movements, not too knowledgeable on Goju Kata but I am sure there's plenty of direction changes etc in the kata that you already know To add to Kuma's post
-
I would say this is where Sabaki comes in, any movement is there, if you are good at perceiving what the kata interpretation is
-
Agreed, but what is in context is as stated before where we look at Kode Te and Kara Te. as previously Okinawan arts were more like "Kenpo" styles than Kara Te styles prior to the formation of the proper schools

Get atleast 2 of my students through their Shodan (1st Dan) Blackbelts. Grade my Assistant Instructor through his next Level. Take my own promotion grading with some senior Grades I know. Increase my student base/open a new dojo in another area. And be a good Christian, Amen
-
98% agree with you there, I have junior Dan grades under 16 but their belts are not pure black, they are the equivalent adult rank of 1s( Kyu where to take and adult black belt they grade for the adult belt at 16. I don't take anyone under the age of 6 1/2 years old (and that's with an older sibling) as before then is just a cheap babysitting service!!!

Kata is what Karate is about, in Judo they have 9 kata that you have to learn too!!! If it was life and death situation you'd learn the kata quickly enough then! Dare I say its because you can't be bothered because YOU feel the kata is a waste of time, not the fact that the Pinan kata are a complete fighting system with applications including stand up grappling and basic self defence. If your Instructor doesn't know how to apply this to the kata then go find one that does.

Yeap that's one of the videos, not too sure if it is a series or similar but would love the DVD quite similar to "The Foot Fist Way"

I was wondering if anyone has some really good Stamina Training, here's one of mine Try it an "8-min Bag Test" Total is non stop for 8 minutes:- 1 min continuous round kicks - thigh left leg 1 min continuous round kicks - thigh right leg 2 mins continuous front kicks - stomach left leg/right leg 2 mins continuous punching - stomach left/right fist 2 mins continuous punching and kicking - right/left leg/fist Constant power/speed!!! Do it correct you'll be knackered/absolutely tired after the 8 mins if not you not put enough effort in to it!!! Looking forward to your best stuff too!!!

Taekwondo uses the hands too!
Dobbersky replied to DWx's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Interesting!!!! -
Naihanchi kata IS a grappling kata for both stand up AND ground work. You could spend a lifetime on this kata and still not have found everything. This kata is practised by many styles and each one has a slightly different way of doing it Have you/Do you study martial arts? As if you are a senior grade you should "see" many of the applications already!!! Are you writing a book on this or something similar?

OSU Evergrey-san Dare I add that it was possibly just Sosai's preferred position. As Sosai was the head of Kyokushin if he deemed it as so then so be it. The same as General Choi added the "Sine Wave" to the Poomsae of ITF taekwondo. (Everyone I asked always points toward General Choi adding it and can't truly explain a genuine reason for it except to differentiate it from Japanese Karate). Also I see in Kyokushin a few Korean techniques in the some of the strikes are performed. Also I believe Oyama Sosai and General Choi were good friends/acquaintances within the martial arts.

Hi Not too sure if you tried this school but did a google search to find this one http://www.medwaykarate.co.uk/ Its Wado Ryu/kai so should be excellent for self defense
-
Chopper PM me your location I'll see if I know someone in your area that I can recommend!?!
-
I am not keen on the Go Kan Ryu ethos, especially when non black belts are teaching classes without supervision - same issue as a unqualified surgeon doing a minor operation, you just wouldn't let it happen! Now if GKR only allowed qualified black belts with a minimum of 3 1/2 years experience of the style then I would have no issues. Its the fact that the "instructor" themselves is still trying to learn the basics themselves let alone teach them! Now when you were searching in your area for martial arts schools did you check out your local sports centres or church halls? There are many very well qualified schools who don't advertise or go door knocking!!! Think about it if they didn't do the door knocking would the "style" be as big as it is? Now if you are happy with what your are doing as long as you accept that the chances are you will be unable to defend yourself properly or the fact that you may develop injuries due to your instructor not knowing the correct way of doing the exercise you are performing then just relax forget the bad press on the whole GKR then enjoy and carry on up the levels in GKR

I would also like to add this from a friend on another forum, to this forum: People punch that way precisely because they fail to ask, "why?" Traditional martial arts instruction does not encourage critical thinking. The idea is that the art was perfected at some point in the past, and the task today is to preserve the sacred tradition. People just assume that because those silly movements are in the art, they must have a practical purpose. They don't.
-
The answer in Martial arts is Aikido and/or Tai chi but don't think that these are totally passive as they can be as deadly as the other arts. There are 'no' strikes in these arts but an experienced practitioner can see many under laid in their forms. Regards Kempo, it pre dates karate in its introduction into the States especially in Hawaii and I completely understand that it bolts on to many arts, but how many schools practice pure unadulterated Kenpo (if its not pure Kenpo, it shouldn't be called Kenpo any more)
-
Kenpo/Kempo is an excellent art but there does seem to be a lot of "Master Ken" Instructors (Ameri Te Do i - see Youtube) about in this style. Many have trained in other arts too to create a Kenpo hybrid. You got to look far and wide for a real decent kenpo school! I would have suggested Kick-boxing or Muay Thai as there's no forms to learn etc so you can still put much into you core style
-
A Hybrid, but anything after Naha Te, Shuri Te and Tomari Te is a Hybrid If its something that fills the Gaps and they teach genuine martial Arts, relax and enjoy OSU!!!
-
May I also add that in the various "Sabaki" Competitions from Ashihara and Enshin and Daiko Juku Grabing IS allowed as part of the genre of "legal" techniques
-
All Excellent and dare I say awesome posts by everyone with regards to this topic!!! May I add that "karate punching" is dare i say not punching at all but a practice of Kyoushi Take the basic Grab in Judo, Left Hand on the opponent's Right Shoulder/Lapel, Right Hand grasping the underneath of the opponent's Left Elbow - very similar to the position of the basic Karate front stance!!! Now with the Punch, the Hikite, you get the push/pull action, whilst twisting the opponent's shoulder to one side creating him/her to be off-balance. This in succession can become a basic throw!!! This is how I teach the Karate Punching aswell as the Grab and punch as discussed above again thank you all
