  1. lots of good answers! thanx! see ive found lately that when im working with someone, i feel that because im not mad at that person i almost tend to hold back a little. unless they tell me, try to hit me as hard as you can. if my sensei sais to, i can no problem. its almost like i need permission ,in a sense, to hit harder. and i cant seem to break myself of it. i guess im afraid to hit someone by accident
  2. My sensei sais that I have gotten my Dragon down... but i need to bring out my tiger... any ideas on how i can help myself become more... "mean " so to speak, more aggressive? i need to let it out.. and i havnt quite figured it out yet. so any ideas would be very helpful
  3. i do when i have the time to train alone. usually System of a down, tool, Rob Zombie. something harder sounding but that still has a good beat to it
  4. we have a lot of people in our dojo that have that same issue. Sensei had us do a drill back and forth doing nothing but chambering. hold your hands together in front of your face and basically knee your palms over and over. make your butt push your knee higher. if you have problems with that height, lower your hands a little and slowly raise them up every time you chamber. pretty soon we all could get our knees up to faces so, we could now kick past our faces. it helped me, give it a try!
  5. well.... i started training a little over a year ago.. i am 21, and i started training in hopes to gain more self esteem, and confidence. and so far so good. training in the martial arts has helped me in so many ways mentally.. i have been going through some really hard times lately and this has helped me to focus on something other then the bad stuff. I dont think i could thank my sensei enough for how he has helped me.

I just attended an 8 hour seminar up in Westford Mass, and got the chance to work with 4 Black belts from Japan, 1 from Hawaii, Nick Cerios wife among a few others. i wanted to know if anyone has also had the pleasure of working with any of these names. Chosei Motobu Sensei (29th soke) Kagenori Ueno Sensei (28th soke) Master Bill Chun JR Prof. Feliciano "Kimo" Ferreira these men were amazing and tought us a lot! I cant believe the amount of Knowledge these men have
  8. i deffinatly agree with going slow at first. you want to make sure you fell completely comfortable with doing the whole form, so in the end you dont even have to really have to think about what your doing, your body just does it. dont worry about everyone elses speed. i tend to be one of the slower people in my class when it comes to forms, but my sensei sais ive gotten the moves down, my next step is my intensity. take forms at your own pace. one thing that always helped me when i practice, is i listen to a pretty fast paced song that I really like, and it kind of motivates me to move with the music. i may be crazy, who knows!
  9. So you can only select to train with one weapon? we are allowed to study any weopon with the exception of the Katana (until we reach Black belt). My friend and I chose to do these weopons (Escrima and Kama) and want to stick with them until we feel comfortable. our sensei doesnt require us to stay with just one, he just feels if we want to learn a weopon its better to get good at it before we switch it up. ....But im very interested in weopons forms so I want to learn Quite a few. although Escrima will be my weopon of choice

  11. i study Kempo, and Kempo juitsu kai and we are allowed to pick our weopon by blue belt. Ive Been Learning Escrima and my best friend is learning Kama
  12. from what i have seen, all 3 styles are great. the Instructor is the biggest factor. are they going to push you? or do they want your money and let you fly through? are you going to get what you want out of the class? my suggestion would be to see if you can watch a class at each dojo, maybe even participate. and see from there. I would say Kempo, but that form is not for everyone. I just happen to have a lot of fun in that class, and my sensei works our butts off, i deffinatly feel i have earned my rank by the time hes done with us.... and the fact that a lot of people call it "the art of dirty fighting" tends to get a lot of people in my area in there. if your in a situation where you are in trouble, dont be afraid to do what you have to do. and dont be afraid to ask questions to see what each forms have that you like. some forms do a lot more kicking, some a lot more grappling, some punching.   14. i dont know if he does this already or not, but put out the suggestion that the kids have to bring in signed papers saying that they are behaving in school and keeping up there grades, and have weekly reports from the parents making sure they do what theyr parents ask them to. and if they dont get anything signed they dont get to test. or sumthing to that effect. i dont know, just a suggestion
  15. my sensei is worried about his dojo sometimes, wether he admits it or not, you can tell. and i feel bad for him, but hes workin his butt off to try and make everything work. he'll figure it out, and so will your sensei, if he truly wants it.
  16. my sensei said that the first 3 belts people tend to go through a bit faster. in our belt system it goes white yellow orange purple blue (me!, yay!) blue stripe green green stripe brown brown stripe 2nd stripe 3rd stripe black He sais that usually you kinda fly through the first 2-3 belts (about 2 month span between each rank) and after that we have manditory time limits on testing unless he sais we are ready before hand. and he will approach us if he feels we are ready or if we need to work on something a lot more. my test i just took for blue belt about 3 weeks ago was absolutly killer, my best friend and I were going for blue, then we had 2 green stripes going for brown and one 2nd stripe brown going for his 3rd stripe, so we had a lot more work cut out for us than we had thought. our test was only supposed to be 2 hours long but because of the higher ranks it turned into about 3 1/2 hours. he said it was one of the most physical tests he had done in a long time. trust him! you probably earned it and then some!. the people that say they dont think they earned it, (in my eyes) tend to have done almost better, because they realize they have stuff to work on, and know they are not perfect.
  17. thanks for all the ideas. i have to do as much cardio as i can i guess. i should have specified. i dont drink soda, or eat candy. i think my biggest issue is i dont eat very much at all. maybe once a day, and its a bad habit i have to get out of. unfortunatly, i had a slight eating disorder a couple years back and would only eat about once every 3 or 4 days. cant do it now, obviously with the classes or id be passed out in the first 15 minutes.
  18. i just bought the new tool cd (10,000 days) incredible, and my other 2 favorite cds by them, Aenima and Undertow. but they are all good. a few of the songs really get me pumped before class, so i listen to them on the ride over and ive actually noticed a lot of my strikes are stronger when i have certain songs stuck in my head. kinda strange and maybe its just me, but who knows!
  19. this may sound kind of odd... i dont know. ive always had a self esteem problem, i figured MA would help me out with that. and so far it has been, most definatly. the thing is, I am a bit bigger. im 21, i know i have a lot of muscle on my body and i am 5ft8... but i used to weigh over 230lbs.. through a lot of training and such, i have managed to lose about 45lbs. even though it is a vast improvement for me, i want to lose about another 30. any suggestions as to what excersizes i could do to reach my goal, that is some what fast paced? not to sound impatient or anything
  20. my favorite band to work out to is actually Tool. since there songs have high and low tempos, hard and soft sounds, instrumental and vocal. you can kinda incorporate a good work out to all of the songs, wether it just be practicing forms or actually hitting stuff or if ya really need to let some anger and frustration out.... try either System of a down, or Rammstein. those are my 3 favorites

  22. seems as though a lot of dojo's dont care as much any more and are giving out ranks for the money. it burns me up to know that i work my butt off, train my hardest and i see people in other schools who achieve "black belt" in a year. im sorry but people just dont learn all that information that fast. ive been studying my form for a year and have just gotten my Blue belt a couple weeks ago. as it is, my sensei sais I am not allowed to test until october, at the very earliest. and thats fine with me! i want to learn, i want to learn this form right and i want to train hard. then i feel i have atleast earned my rank. ok i feel better now that i have vented
  23. in our school, (Cape Cod Martial Arts Academy) we primarily learn, Shaolin Kempo (villari, Cerio ect..) But we also learn a lot of Kempo Juitsu-Kai (Prof. Kimo). I have luckily had the chance to study with Prof. Kimo himself. Master Chris Hatch (5th dan) is my main instructor. He definatly works us hard and is one of the most helpful people I have met. Everyone in our class has a lot of fun (atleast from what i have heard and seen) I usually train about 3 times a week (more if i have extra cash ) and I am very excited to finally start learning Escrima in my spare time.
