What's your job- what would you like it to be?
brokenswordx replied to marie curie's topic in General Chat
Does student count as a job? If not then I don't have a job. Anyways I want to be a musician or a martial arts instructor. -
I've been informed that 2 brown belts have passed the test to become black belts. I was surprised that one of the guys passed becuase he seemed lax at practice and would rather goof off than train. Even though I may not like the person of a high rank, I don't disrespect them. I do keep my distance from them...

i've been thinking about starting a iaido club at my college. the kendo sensei he was hoping to start one someday. i would be happy to be the president if it ever got formed, but i know i need to get some extra training from where i learned iaido. lol, but not now since i'm busy doing a million other things, maybe in the spring semeter. i would like to know if there's anything i should except and prepare for, since i will ultimately be in charge of running the club.

dragonwarrior_keltyr: i started college a few weeks ago too and they have a shotokon club here. lol, i'm not to sure about joining since i'm almost a black belt in shito-ryu and kendo starts around the same time as the shotokon. anyways if you like the club, then continue to train in it, but i can't say the same for me....

Lately I’ve been wondering on whether or not I should continue my martial arts. I’ve realized that martial arts serve a variety of purposes for people of all walks of life, but what’s the real goal behind it all? To better yourselves? Have a closer connection to the past? Physical fitness? We’re not living in the days of hand to hand combat or complete social failure (though we‘re heading that way…). In all reality when will I truly need to defend myself with the techniques and skills I have learned? I could easily get a gun license, buy a gun and use it to protect myself or use my martial arts training and in either case get killed. The core of martial arts was to defend yourself in a world of oppression and bloodshed, but we’re living in modern day. Would you really want to live in a world of blood washing blood? In those days only the strongest (mental or physical) survived. But today like everything else people come out of nowhere (Final Fu, the people on youtube.com) and poorly represent the martial arts with their limited knowledge and talent for the “real” meaning and understanding behind the art. It’s all for the dough….and what of the true masters? Those men and women who dedicated their lives to martial arts, what do they really have to show? Techniques and knowledge that have no real use in today’s world….. So is there really any reason to put your blood, sweat, tears, effort, time, money or (in some cases your very) life in martial arts when the world and changing times have made them “arts” from them being “a way of life”?

How old are you fellow martial artists?
brokenswordx replied to Greek Fighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion

How good do YOU think you are?
brokenswordx replied to baronbvp's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Assessment: since my dojo now has the "regulars" training in the advanced class, it's easier to see who excels at what than when we first started out. i'm not the strongest or fastest, but what i do have is the drive and attention to detail that some of my fellow peers lack. i found that i had to work harder to get my belt then others and often tried to compete with them to be "the best" student, but 1 day i realize that i would never get anywhere in my training as long as i had an excessive competitive nature. i then focus on improving the areas i was struggling in. i used to work harder when i first started training than i do now and at times feel guilty for it.... Bottom Line: ????, well i don't think i've been training long enough to know for sure.....but my sensei did tell my i had good technique....and practice actually does help you get better... -
other than martial arts: *music-playing my guitar and piano, writing lyrics, practicing my vocals (preparing to be a superstar lol) *art-painting and drawing manga *video games-playing fighting games and rpg's *hanging out with my family and friends

Martial Arts "Monogamy"
brokenswordx replied to bushido_man96's topic in Instructors and School Owners
i agree with your monogamy post. lol my sensei was very upset with me when i mentioned that i wanted to train in a chinese art to balance my karate. he told to stay with karate, maybe he was worried i would leave since most of our regulars stop coming. (this is a long time ago) -
What's to many Black Belts?
brokenswordx replied to KempoMinistry's topic in Instructors and School Owners
amen! anyways my sensei said is wasn't wise to quit training right after you get your black belt because it's at that level where you will truly understand your art. -
i drink in moderation, it doesn't have control of my life since i know my limit and don't pass it. lol i don't drink in a social setting 'cause trouble always comes with it in my case, so i drink alone....

if you're into fighting games get doa 4 and virtua fighter 5, but beware of online play with lag and crazy people insulting you on your headset....

ha ha i need am alarm (set to 4:50 with the volume all the way up) since i have to get my younger sibling of to school on time, but i used this to my advantage by practicing my iaido about an hour before i wake him up. getting up early to train has improved my technique so i don't mind, the weekend however it a different story....

today's my b-day and i'm turning 18! YAY ME! ^_^

i like all the kata's, but haku, bassai dai, matsukaze, and jiin are mt favorites. lol someone in class literally called me the "kata master".....oh i also annanko when i can remember it....i train in shito ryu karate
-
i personally think training in ANY martial art will be difficult, but as long as you train hard and like the martial art it'll be worth it....
-
Do you still remember and practice the early kata?
brokenswordx replied to baronbvp's topic in Karate
yes, i try to practice all the ones i can remember. the higher ranks are stressed more for performing the lower ranking katas with more refinement than the belts below us. my sensei tells me not to "paint a picture" but to perform the moves like the attacker was really there, it's hard to do sometimes, but practicing the bunkai helps... -
i got my brown belt with white stripe a few songs ago. now i'm only one belt away from black!

i was wondering what people in k-forums are doing and want to do in their lives. like are in school or have a job, plans for the future, etc, etc. it's my last year of high school and i'm going to college in the fall of 2007. i'm saving up my money now and still looking even though i got accpeted into the collge i wanted, i plan on majoring in accounting and music. i really want to be a musician, i wrote i few songs and i'm taking guitar lessons now. the people that read my lyrics say they're pretty good and have insight, i really want to connect to people and show them that it's never to late to live your dream as long as you have a plan and drive to make it come true. i know i'll never stop training in martial arts and i hope to train in a chinese art after i get my black belt in karate. i eventually want to get married and have my own karate and iaido dojo sometime later on. well enough about moi, i want to hear about you guys...oh and girls too!

What Drives a Martial Artist?
brokenswordx replied to ZR440's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
lol when i first started taking karate i wanted to be "the best" student and my dojo and was often frustrated with myself because i was comparing everything i did to the higher ranks. then 1 day i realized that as long as i had intentions to be "the best" i would never be a black belt, so that's when i trained to be the best i could be without doubts or 2nd guesses. i had to trust myself and strength and in time i became more powerful now than when i first started. lol i know i'm a bit different from everyone else in the dojo (i'm the only african american in the higher rank class), but i was asked to help out someone when they got stuck. it's my nature to help and i never once said no, remembering when i needed help...anyways now that i'm a brown belt, my sensei has me help out the younger kids and in iai-do i guess cause i give pretty good explantions and i pay attention to what id being taught. getting my black belt has always driven me and kept me from quitting karate and iaido and i'm thankful i didn't 'cause now i'm only 2 more borwn belt away from getting my black belt. even more than that is to protect people and try to stop voilence before it starts, i broke up a fight in once school and everyone thouight i lost my mind, but i was thinking that martial arts teaches to talk out our problems before striking and doing something we'll later regret. lol i didn't mean to get this deep into the topic.... -
How many martial arts have you taken?
brokenswordx replied to Patrick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i've taken 3, karate, iaido and some chinese art through my school (i can't remember the name....) -
i do respect the black belts, but as far as aspiring to be like them...no. the fact that they train for free doesn't bother since when i become 1 i won't have to pay either. i probably should have stated earlier that the 2 black belts that train with us are in their late teens (most of the people that go there are around that age or younger.) lol that fact that just about everyone thinks that i'm a "black belt hater" isn't true, the topic was just a thought a had....
