If You Created Your Own Martial Art Style....
Sohan replied to Sohan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I get a kick out of schools that advertise they teach "Muay Thai", and you get in and it's simply basic kickboxing without even teaching much elbows and knees---the best part is when it's taught by converted aerobics instructors who got their "certification" in MT but have never trained with anyone who has fought nor trained in authentic MT. I love the hook kick. It's never expected and great to see the look on your opponents face when executed well. Since we don't practice it in Shorin-ryu, and I learned it in my Korean MA training, it is fun to use in class. I get asked often how to perform it. With respect, Sohan

Your technique as described is an application of rising power which is a principle quite common in the Pinan kata found in Shorin-ryu karate-do. But I do greatly appreciate your generosity nonetheless. I feel rather enlightened. With respect, Sohan

Funny you say that. When I boxed, I had quite a temper and which got me in situations I shouldn't have been in as a kid. When I began karate, though, I feel that I became more patient, less controlling, and I let things go more easily. Maybe it was the delaying of gratification that karate forces you to deal with, or maybe it's the intense concentration it requires to perfect technique. Regardless, I feel boxing and Muay Thai seemed to make me more aggressive, while I feel much more inner peace and tranquility from my karate training. With respect, Sohan

I enjoy hook kicks, because my opponent is never ready for them. Always takes them by surprise. With respect, Sohan

A week out? You're either ready or you aren't. You won't improve that dramatically in the last week, but you can definitely overtrain and be "off" on your big day. I say better to rest up, keep practices short to stay sharp, and go in mentally and physically in flow. Good luck! With respect, Sohan

I don't believe I've ever seen that before. With respect, Sohan

Weapons training can translate to other implements if you understand your training methodology. You never know what potential fighting tools you may have at your disposal, and someone who is adept at using the various MA weapons should be able to translate their skills to what's available. Watch any Jackie Chan movie to see what I mean--sure, it's entertainment, but he creatively shows what can be done with what's at hand. With respect, Sohan

In today's age of Photoshop and CGI, it's difficult to convince anyone of anything anymore. However, after repeated viewings, I think that things perhaps may not be what they seem here. It wouldn't be the first "qi" trickery I've seen before. With respect, Sohan

So you're saying that everything has merit---except for opinions you disagree with. With respect, Sohan

Well, who's bringing the beer? If our British friends are coming, I think it's only fair they bring the good stuff. With respect, Sohan -
Do some calf raises, knee wheels, hip circles, ankle rotations, then some light jumping jacks. That should help. I wouldn't run as a warm-up. With respect, Sohan

I have truly never seen anything so 100% tacky as this. I think I hurt myself laughing: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8610362188397291938 With respect, Sohan

Blue? Oh, well, then that's your mistake. Should have gotten the white ones. Seriously, though, are they somewhat flexible? They do appear fine to me. Probably more the hard floor and need for slow buildup that is more the issue. With respect, Sohan

Sure! And don't forget, we also need to have include our fried items as well. In the South, we fry just about anything that doesn't move. I'm really amazed at the culinarily challenged frymasters that I discover in the small corners of Georgia. I have eaten fried pickles, ice cream, fried meats of all sorts, and even fried french fries (they fry the potatoes, then cover them in batter and fry them again!). Maybe I'll just stick to the baked beans and cole slaw. With respect, Sohan -
Interesting you say this. I have always seen weapons training as an extension of the natural body, and the drills and forms to perform weapons work as being similar to open handed work. However, Toshihiro Oshiro, of Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu fame and a student of Shoshin Nagamine, has said that this is a misconception. He says empty kata was designed for just that, empty hands, and weapons footwork and stances should be different from that of empty hand fighting. He claims weapons come with "their own power" and that the weapon tells you how to move, not the other way around. Not sure if I totally agree, but it is quite an interesting perspective, nonetheless. With respect, Sohan
