  1. According to Wikipedia, besides Chuck and Cro-Cop, Maurice Smith, Pedro Rizzo, and Phil Baroni are also "sprawl and brawlers". With respect, Sohan
  2. This message came from my sensei about one of our blackbelts, who is 55 and has a wife and children. He and I have studied and trained together in karate-do for many years. I would appreciate so much if you all could keep him in your thoughts and prayers. With respect, Sohan From Sensei: Dear Advanced Students, As most of you know, Richard M. had been coughing very badly and went to the doctor for a checkup. After x-rays and a CAT scan, the doctor found a 2" lesion on his lung that may be lung cancer. On Monday, Richard had a scope and biopsy performed. The results were mixed. The good news was that the sample they tested did not show any signs of cancer or tuberculosis. Unfortunately, this is not conclusive. Apparently, Richard's lung was unusually congested/constricted. The doctor was not able to freely move the scope around within the lung as he should have been. He therefore could not necessarily biopsy the right spot or very accurately see within the lung. Even if it is not cancer, Richard said the doctor said this was not normal. The next step will be to order a PET Scan (I believe that's the correct name) and then to perform a needle biopsy based on the results of that test. Richard remains in relatively good spirits and is keeping a positive attitude. Please keep him in your prayers. Sensei
  3. Never assume an outcome in MMA fights. I seem to remember the talk about Arlovsky being unbeatable, and he proved otherwise. I have seen Rich Franklin KO'd, Chuck Liddell beaten several times, and Matt Hughes has had his losses as well. In the UFC, Pride, etc, everyone loses at some point. Diego will have his wins and his losses, and so will Hughes. What the outcome will be between them is intriguing, and this is why we fight the fights. With respect, Sohan
  4. No, they haven't. STRIKE: 1. to deal a blow or stroke to (a person or thing), as with the fist, a weapon, or a hammer; hit. 2. to inflict, deliver, or deal (a blow, stroke, attack, etc.). 3. to drive so as to cause impact: to strike the hands together. A quote (I wish I could remember who said it) is brought to mind. "Your right to swing your fist ends at the tip of my nose." If I raise a fist to you, it is only a crime if I intended the gesture as either a threat, or if I intended to actually hit you. It would come down to me proving that I did not intend threatened or actual harm, and you proving that you believed me to pose a danger. It would be a matter of the specific circumstances, and, as you said, witnesses. Ether way, the charge that would most likely result would be disorderly conduct (for both of us), and I would take a trial by a jury of my peers for disorderly conduct long before I would take my chances fighting someone who has already broken my nose. There are three steps to surviving violent confrontation: 1. Physical 2. Legal 3. Emotional/Mental Worry about the first one first. Without it, the other two are meaningless. It doesn't matter what a court decides if you aren't around for the decision. Of course you won't be given the benefit of the doubt, no one is. If you let him swing first and he breaks your jaw, you won't have to worry about being charged with any crime, but is it worht it? P.S. I have great faith in people's ability to not necessarily always recognize the truth (lies can be very convincing), but to understand that the spirit of the law always takes precedent over the letter. This is why we have juries, not computers. If you point a weapon at someone, raise your fist as if you are going to strike someone, or make your intentions otherwise known that you are going to do harm to someone, you have committed ASSAULT. Assault is considered a first strike and is an action that can be justifiable by the use of deadly force to defend against it in many states, including my state of Georgia. Next time, please research the law first before you tell people that they're wrong. With respect, Sohan
  5. I'm inclined to agree, but with the UFC, you never know. I think GSP, Hughes, and BJ Penn would likely beat him, but I wonder how close it would be. Looks he may get his chance after GSP-Hughes is decided. With respect, Sohan

  14. Not necessarily. At least in Wisconsin, a preemptive strike is permissible by law. If you can orate the circumstances and show that you believed the other party to pose an imminent threat on your safety, the court will generally find your actions justified. If someone raises their fist toward me in anger, I will hit them. If someone holds a weapon to me, I will definitely hit them. If two menacing individuals corner me, and I believe that they mean to cause me harm, I will hit them as well, and repeatedly, if necessary. If someone points a weapon at me, they have already made the first strike. If someone raises their fist at me, they have already made the first strike. If I am cornered by two thugs who intend me harm, then they have already committed assault according to the law, so they have already made the first strike. You place a lot of confidence in the judicial system. I assume you haven't ever been hauled into court for being in a fight. I have, and you are not given the benefit of the doubt as easily as you think. Regardless, better make sure you have witnesses and a spotless record before you strike first in any situation. As well as the number of a good attorney. With respect, Sohan
  15. If you want to develop mastery of power and energy, you would probably do it best by not being up at 3:00 AM. Go back to sleep. With respect, Sohan
  16. 13.04. So I have the highest power score? Doubtful. This is not a valid test of power. Power is determined by work divided by time. There is no calculation of time here, but rather just a weak correlation to work, which would be determined by force * distance. With respect, Sohan
  17. Actually, what occurs is that the strike to the chest causes the heart to fibrillate, and go out of its normal rhythym. If a defibrillator is not used quickly, the person will go into cardiac arrest and likely expire. This strike must occur at a very specific point in the heart rate cycle, so not any punch will cause this to occur. With respect, Sohan
  18. He looked great last week against Karo Parisyan, though I thought the fight was a lot closer than the announcers made it seem. Diego won the fight by dominating the last half of the third, IMO. Karo certainly looked worse for the wear. OK, Diego, I'm definitely a believer now. But let's see you do it against Matt Hughes. With respect, Sohan
  19. Sounds great. I haven't read the book, but have considered getting it. Let me know how it works for you! With respect, Sohan
  20. Sorry to hear that. Hope you get better soon. I had a similar experience last week. I was going for a front push kick but didn't pull my toes back enough. He blocked it with his very hard shins and I caught my big toe head on and jammed the heck out of it. I haven't had it X-rayed but suspect it may be chipped. I can run on it but kicks and regular boxing stances are a challenge. No worries, though. Everything heals in time. With respect, Sohan
  21. I am quite certain that striking first in a street fight will likely have at least one result: YOU will be the one convicted of assault in court.... With respect, Sohan
  22. Good stuff. I appreciate you sharing it with us! With respect, Sohan
  23. I've been in a 007 movie mode for the past few weeks, and a thought occurred to me last night: Why does "Q", the gadget guru, get older in every film, but James Bond always remains the same age? I know it's been the same actor since the second film, but still, it's a little odd to see when you watch all the movies together in a short time period. Perhaps 007 has taken tips from Dorian Gray.... With respect, Sohan
