  1. First, check with your instructor. Then, check with all of the area schools, because many will have a yearly tournament. Also, check to see if there are any Association schools in the area that will allow non-members compete in their tournaments. This will help you get started.
  2. I have found that if you pivot the base foot just a little before you begin the kick, that it is easier to finish the pivot when the kick is completed. An instructor of mine called this a "pre-pivot."
  3. There are rumors and theories that run around on that stuff all the time. It could happen, but I would not rely on such an idea to end a fight.
  4. It looks pretty unanimous, judging by all the posts. I guess that is why the follow through is so important. This also explains why shorter techniques, or jammed up techniques, aren't as effective.
  5. You want to get a good quality strike in. Punch to the side of the head, tough guys can take it. But a good strike on the nose, bloodying it, and tearing up the eyes, causes distractions as well. It is quality that counts.
  6. Hope you get better soon. Should have just kicked him, might have pushed him out of range!
  7. He's a big guy. But he doesn't look too fat. I mean...he looks more like he's built like Bolo Young. Large chest and arms with a body that matches. I think the thread is talking more about guys who are just fat outright. if you actually watch some of his older films, esp the ones he did with jackie chan, he is actually fat, not stocky. edit: sorry, thought you were talking about samo. He is pretty hefty in Enter the Dragon as well, but he could still do back hand springs. I can't even spell bakc hasnspings.
  8. Hey, that's good, too.
  9. To be honest with you, it will depend on how you train more than the style. Also important will be the methods of instruction. Your best bet is to try to sit down and watch a class of each, and see which one fits the bill for you. You may also consider taking a couple of the styles, like boxing for standup, and BJJ for grappling. Just a thought. By the way, welcome to KF!
  10. Wow, that is interesting. I have never seen him fight, but I know he had a pretty good career.
  11. I used to compete about 2 times a year, not much more. Try to keep your cardio up, and work technique and sparring drills a lot.
  12. Well, just use the extra 3 months to really start cracking things out. Do each form so hard it makes you tired, then do another. An exercise you could do is to do your form with great technique and a fast pace, but not so fast you can't control it. Then, do it 5 more times, and go for the gusto. Put more speed and power into it than you have ever used. If technique slops, that's ok. What will happen is that you will push your muscles into a new level of speed that they haven't worked yet. After doing this 5 times, rest, and then do the form at your normal pace, to keep the correct technique. Do it a couple of times. Try this, and see where your power goes. Good luck!
  13. Watch the last fight, after he does the final technique in each movie, and watch the guy sprawl in pain on the mat. It looks exactly the same.
  14. Noticed this was your first post, so welcome to KF! As for the names, one's last name was Pumphries I think, and I can't remember the others.
  15. Ooh, that is a good quote. I like it. Yeh, its one of my favourites And I don't understand why some people tell me I am bitter.
  16. This is kind of cool. I have never seen a set-up like this before. In the TKD tourneys, we have to do the form at our rank. Apparently the karate tourneys allow any form from the system? Kind of cool.
  17. Practice lots! Just kidding. I have been doing two jumps with both feet, then switching to two on one foot, and then two on the other, then back to both feet. I am not very good yet, however. I want to build up to the Rocky routine, but that looks miles down the road from here!
  18. Ooh, that is a good quote. I like it.
  19. Hmmm, very interesting. I feel that we all have an energy inside of us. If we didn't, I don't think we could function. Call it life force, call it a soul, but I think it is the same thing. This may also be ki, in the Japanese sense of the word. I am not saying it is, but it could be. As far as being able to transfer this energy, I don't know what to think about that. Why the far east contains the only cultures to discover ki is, I have no idea. There were some very fierce warriors that came from Western cultures throughout the ages, and they are just as viable as any far eastern warrior you could name. I think it has to do with their culture's perceptions of things. Whether it is true or not, who can say, but they precieve it as such. Maybe Ueshiba was bodering on a blind rage that he was going into. Or, it could have been the direct opposite of blind rage, which would be total focus. Who knows, maybe he just had freaky eyes.
  20. Did anyone notice that the fight scene at the end of the first movie ends a lot like the fight scene at the end of the third movie? Watch them and take a look. Very fishy...
  21. Wow, wreaking of alcohol. Not good, he could be a liability to himself and everyone in the school. Hopefully the instructor does something about him.
  22. This is true. I want to learn something from everybody!
  23. I was not impressed, either. I missed the first half of the show, which had the boxer and thai boxer, apparently. There was too much drama and choreography, especially with the weapons. Some of the readings they had were cool, and the breaking guys were cool. I did like Inosanto. Man, he is in good shape. I would love to learn the kali sticks.
  24. Good to see that your sensei is going to stand by you. Hope it all continues to go well.
