  1. Hey, that's good, too.
  2. To be honest with you, it will depend on how you train more than the style. Also important will be the methods of instruction. Your best bet is to try to sit down and watch a class of each, and see which one fits the bill for you. You may also consider taking a couple of the styles, like boxing for standup, and BJJ for grappling. Just a thought. By the way, welcome to KF!
  3. Wow, that is interesting. I have never seen him fight, but I know he had a pretty good career.
  4. I used to compete about 2 times a year, not much more. Try to keep your cardio up, and work technique and sparring drills a lot.
  5. Well, just use the extra 3 months to really start cracking things out. Do each form so hard it makes you tired, then do another. An exercise you could do is to do your form with great technique and a fast pace, but not so fast you can't control it. Then, do it 5 more times, and go for the gusto. Put more speed and power into it than you have ever used. If technique slops, that's ok. What will happen is that you will push your muscles into a new level of speed that they haven't worked yet. After doing this 5 times, rest, and then do the form at your normal pace, to keep the correct technique. Do it a couple of times. Try this, and see where your power goes. Good luck!
  6. Watch the last fight, after he does the final technique in each movie, and watch the guy sprawl in pain on the mat. It looks exactly the same.
  7. Noticed this was your first post, so welcome to KF! As for the names, one's last name was Pumphries I think, and I can't remember the others.
  8. Ooh, that is a good quote. I like it. Yeh, its one of my favourites And I don't understand why some people tell me I am bitter.
  9. This is kind of cool. I have never seen a set-up like this before. In the TKD tourneys, we have to do the form at our rank. Apparently the karate tourneys allow any form from the system? Kind of cool.
  10. Practice lots! Just kidding. I have been doing two jumps with both feet, then switching to two on one foot, and then two on the other, then back to both feet. I am not very good yet, however. I want to build up to the Rocky routine, but that looks miles down the road from here!
  11. Ooh, that is a good quote. I like it.
  12. Hmmm, very interesting. I feel that we all have an energy inside of us. If we didn't, I don't think we could function. Call it life force, call it a soul, but I think it is the same thing. This may also be ki, in the Japanese sense of the word. I am not saying it is, but it could be. As far as being able to transfer this energy, I don't know what to think about that. Why the far east contains the only cultures to discover ki is, I have no idea. There were some very fierce warriors that came from Western cultures throughout the ages, and they are just as viable as any far eastern warrior you could name. I think it has to do with their culture's perceptions of things. Whether it is true or not, who can say, but they precieve it as such. Maybe Ueshiba was bodering on a blind rage that he was going into. Or, it could have been the direct opposite of blind rage, which would be total focus. Who knows, maybe he just had freaky eyes.
  13. Did anyone notice that the fight scene at the end of the first movie ends a lot like the fight scene at the end of the third movie? Watch them and take a look. Very fishy...
  14. Wow, wreaking of alcohol. Not good, he could be a liability to himself and everyone in the school. Hopefully the instructor does something about him.
  15. This is true. I want to learn something from everybody!
  16. I was not impressed, either. I missed the first half of the show, which had the boxer and thai boxer, apparently. There was too much drama and choreography, especially with the weapons. Some of the readings they had were cool, and the breaking guys were cool. I did like Inosanto. Man, he is in good shape. I would love to learn the kali sticks.
  17. Good to see that your sensei is going to stand by you. Hope it all continues to go well.
  18. Enjoy your time in the art. Please keep us posted as to how it goes. I would like to know more about what goes on in ninjitsu.
  19. I think you are right on here. I think I read somewhere that when TKD was being formed with Gen. Choi, Hong Hi as the head, the government was forcing all of the kwans to unify. I think TSD is the kwan that remained the most independent, and kept its name. Most of the Korean masters learned their arts in Japan, where they got some of their education. Then, they brought it home, and decided to alter it a little, kick more than punch, create a "3000 year history" for the art, and called it their own. Very much political, but Funakoshi made political changes when he took Karate to Japan as well.
  20. In forms, the stances are static. In self-defense, or in throwing arts such as judo, they become transitionary tools, to improve the ability to perform techniques and get from point A to B effectively.
  21. I liked Lambert in the first movie. The second one was ok, but not as good as the first. I didn't like the fact that Johnny Cage died in two, but maybe it was better, since they didn't get the same guy to play him from one. My favorite scene in MK1 was the fight between Johnny Cage and Scorpion.
  22. Yeah, I was not overly impressed either. Too much choreography going on, and too much drama involved. Maybe they could have introduced some Western medieval weapons? I was questioning some of their historical inuendos as well.
  23. They're not doing another movie, are they?
  24. Yep, 12" x 12" x 1". I have broken some 12" x 12" x 2", that was a nice jarring sensation. But they broke! My best board break right now is a back leg round kick--I can get 4 boards on it. I want to try 5! As for one of those breaks that makes people cringe, I like to do a front leg round kick with the top of the foot. Usually one board, no more than two. How about y'all?
  25. I actually watched Martial Law when it was on. I kind of liked it. And boy, could Samo move for a big guy. I know lightweights who can't move like that! There was an episode I remember seeing with Billy Blanks in it, too.
