  1. The UFC may be just a sport, however, it has come the closest to bridging the gap of MA training and actual fighting. Its extensive use of the 3 ranges of combat is what helps to make it one of the most all-inclusive fight/sports out there. Try this. Take an MMA athlete, who has trained for 6 months, and pit him in the ring against the TKD practitioner who has trained for 6 months. What do you suppose the outcome would be?
  2. I know what you're getting at. But don't necessarily agree. If you encountered Mike Tyson in a fight, he would fight alot differently than if you encounter Rickson Gracie. It all has to do with who you've trained with. I would have to agree with ps1 here. Although everyone may not fight the same way, we do all have the same tools at our disposal. It is all about methods of using them. Here is an interesting article on the subject: http://www.karateforums.com/a-principle-of-fighting-vt8176.html I think this may be the point you are trying to make.
  3. I don't believe that to be a "true master" has to be synonomous with being old. If you dedicate your life to studying something, much like Lee did, then you can very well become a master at a young age.
  4. Thanks for the article, Ed. It is a nice history lesson. There are some very interesting highlights in there.
  5. I love when I get this question. My reply is always, "Well there still is a large amount of nerves located there. If you hit them hard enough it will still hurt." This is true. The area is still sensitive to strikes, even on women.
  6. Good point. There is no reason to wait around and let them make the rules! Especially if you are looking at multiple attackers.
  7. That is true. You don't want to get hung up with a charge of beating on someone while they cannot defend themselves. That kind of leads into the "use of force."
  8. 2-20-07 Shoulders, back, and biceps today. Back: Assisted pull-ups: 3 sets of 5 Back Hyperextension: 3x12 Seated Cable Row: 110x10, 130x6, 140x6 One-arm Dumbell Rows: 40x10, 55x6, 55x4 Shoulders: Shoulder Press: 106x8, 111x6, 117x4 One-arm Dumbell Raises: 25x10, 30x6, 35x4 Biceps: Overhead Cable Curls: 40x10, 50x8, 60x6 Cross-body Hammer Curls: 25x10, 30x6, 35x4 Abs: Decline Abs: 3x15 Side Raises: 3x20x25 lbs. Hanging Knee Raises: 3x10 For some reason, be it the hang cleans or TKD class from the night before, my arms were pretty sore going into my workout today. But, I made it through.
  9. That's why I'm a dog person! That's some tough luck, Kez! I hope it doesn't slow down your class time!
  10. I guess they do it because they can?? I have a buddy who was a Reserve; I'll see what he thinks about it.
  11. The Bodyweight Culture exercises have been floating around here on the forums before. They do have some interesting exercises. Some of them kind of remind me of the old style calesthenic exercises.
  12. Baron summed things up pretty well there, from what I know (limited as that may be ). But generally, higher weight/lower reps is more conducive to strenth and power building. Start lifting, get a feel for the exercises you like, and then set some lifting goals and objectives. Then, take them to a personal trainer, and see if they can customize your routine to better help you meet your expectations.
  13. What do you mean by training with a single band? Is that an elastic band exercise, or something like that? Regardless, I think that push-ups still have training value, so doing them will be beneficial.
  14. Welcome to KF!
  15. I'm not familiar with it, baron. Could you give me some more information on it?
  16. I know why, at least my wife says it exist to annoy her. I'll set the alarm for 4AM and hit the slooze at least 3 times. Each time my wife says that she wakes up and can't get back to sleep. I'm the same way. My wife, however, can sleep through the alarm!
  17. Did anyone see the Daytona 500 this weekend? A pretty good race, although most of my favorite drivers ended up watching the finish. Harvick pulled the sweep, and won his first Daytona 500 in the process. Congrats to him. Jeff Burton looked good, too. It may be another solid season for RCR.
  18. Essentially, last year was his rookie year. A lot of people are over-looking this fact. Prior to last year, he had injury problems, or was busy learning the offense, and waiting his turn. Rex Grossman has a ton of potential, and could be the next franchise quarterback for the Bears. Sports fan want everything now, now, now. Rookie quarterbacks just don't win Super Bowls that often. I think everyone needs to just slow down, back up, and take a look at things. Give Rex another year, and see what happens. He is better now than some of the starter that are out there. I'd take a straight up trade of Rex Grossman for Trent Green. I think he will be that good in the future. Go back and watch old games of Brett Favre's first few seasons as a starter....I think you will see some similarities.
  19. I don't know, 40 homers, 40 steals, the guy can play. I think A-Rod is a great player, but he just needs to get out of the doldrums.
  20. I do think that it is important for women to spar with men, for the reason that if a woman gets attacked, it will most likely be by a man, rather than a woman. They need to know what they can do against the more physical components of being attacked by a male.
  21. Incidentally, I just saw that Virtua Fighter 5 is to be hitting the shelves (pardon the pun ). It looked very good. I can't remember if it was on PS3 or Xbox 360, though.
  22. When in doubt, go with honesty. In the end, somebody may get hurt, but your integrity won't. If you had not given the belts yet, then this wouldn't be a problem yet. Did you test and promote right away, or was there a waiting period?
  23. A lad at my club did that, it was only a thin pine board though and he had to drill the kick for months before getting it right No doubt! I can do the kick better low than I can high. Don't quite have that flexibility, yet. I will work on it, though. I am going to start practicing my scissor kick as well!
  24. Incidentally, has anyone seen the movie Only the Strong? I thought it was alright. And the Caporieaist that they have on The Quest was awesome to watch.
  25. Sometimes being forced into a few days off helps our bodies out more than we realize, eh?
