Everyone says that Americans like to McDonaldize everything, but I don't think that this is the case. When you go to college in the U.S., you typically graduate in 4 years. Why should it be different when getting a BA in the martial arts, when it is set up as such. To me, the martial arts are really not a big mystery. Whether it takes 4 or 5 or 6 years really should not be the focus. The focus should be on the quality of the instruction that the students get.

I have written them down before, and I also have found them on the internet and printed them off to put in the curriculum sections of the notebook that I keep. I also have several books on the forms that I do, and some that I don't. Now that you mention it, I just remembered that I need to update some of the forms curriculum that I have.

ITF Juche Tul, two-directional kick

This one here is pretty subtle. Those slow spinning heel kicks are pretty wicked, too. I would have to practice a lot on those! Hmm, maybe I will start. I agree; slightly more exaggerated. However, not too bad. Like I mentioned, though, the presence of the sine wave motion does slow down the amount of time between what I would consider to be combination techniques, like the down block/palm heel strikes at the end of the form. That guy did have great technique, though. I'd love to have that side kick! The other kicks in his form lacked the pizzazz of that side kick, I noticed. -
Finger strikes
bushido_man96 replied to NightOwl's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I have done a spear hand strike (finger-tip thrust) into a very thin board, and broke it. It was not the regulation size of testing board, but a thinner board, maybe a 1/2 inch? Although not to be considered impressive, I thought it was pretty cool. -

You are welcome for the explanation. I hope it works out for you. I think most people tend to lean towards that twist kick, and it opens up the hips some, kind of like you are doing the side splits while stretching on the floor. I don't do this kick often, and I am not overly flexible. However, I can somewhat do it. It is not my best kick, but I do feel that I am technically sound enough to know how to perform it. Like I noted earlier, sometimes I like to set up two standing bags and practice kicking between them, either from a running start, or by jumping and spinning. Both will work. -

That's a nice strong pattern. I agree. Although, I must say, that in all of the TKD patterns I am seeing online, I can say that I have never done that sine wave movement. I think it causes the techniques to be individualized too much, and makes the forms look rather choppy. Just my opinion, though. -
Is anyone here into the MLB? Pitchers and catchers are reporting, and the pre-season will be here before you know it. Who is your team? I like the Cubs and the Royals, but will watch just about anything. Now don't tell me who you don't like, just who you like! I love watching baseball because there is so much that can happen. I like to watch, thinking to myself, "who will hit for the next cycle?", or "who will throw the next no-hitter?", or "who will pitch the next perfect game?" Baseball is also so rich in history, that I love reading up about the game's past. My wife says I am into too much sports. Can that really be?

Is anyone doing any home improvement projects?
bushido_man96 replied to bushido_man96's topic in General Chat
Well, the house is coming along so nicely! I love the work that we have done so far. So does my wife. In fact, she loves it so much that she keeps getting more ideas for us to do for more home improvements. I think we will be improving our home for the next 5 years! The living room is finished, and it looks great. The hallway/stairway are nearing completion; we only need one more (heavy) coat of paint for them to be finished. Then, the we will be onto the kitchen. That will be a ball because we are going to have to tear out wallpaper. If you have never had to mess with that, I will inform you right now, that it sucks. No fun whatsoever there! I am slowly getting the pieces of our soon-to-be bookcase primed, so they can then be painted. And last of all, we need to get the crown-molding up and around in our daughter's room to finish it out. Of course, if we left it out, no one would know that it was supposed to be there............. -

Ah, that sums it up for me, NightOwl! Sorry for my cofusions! Ok; Korea: Taekwondo. I do have a certain bias here, doing it for 13 years. However, I would love to explore the art of Tang Soo Do as well. Japan: Judo. With the myriad throwing techniques, I think this style would be a blast to learn. Europe: Western swordsmanship/MA. These systems were all-encompassing, many with training in pole weapons, swords, and in-fighting and wrestling. South American: Caporiea/BJJ. Caporiea is South American, right?? I have to go with both, because Caporiea looks like a ball to do, and BJJ to round out the ground game. Lots of strategy to be learned with both, I think. Thailand: Muay Thai. So rich in history and culture, and great for the body. I'm sure I may be able to think of some later, too! -
That is true, but I'm just not sure I would want to mess with what is already set up. If it isn't broke, don't fix it, you know?

Sometimes our school does (but not me because I'm camera shy). This isn't anyone I know but its one of the best examples I can find on youtube (it keeps coming up with documentarys on the history and ideals behind Korean Juche): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJCUEDPbHaA&feature=PlayList&p=E2B05FE834CD0993&index=5 You can definitely see the sine wave in use there. Ok, bear with me here. As you take off, thrust the takeoff knee up and into your trunk as violently and fast as you can. As you do that, the jumping leg will kind of trail behind, but not tucked really tight. Then, as you finish pulling your knee up into you, thrust that side kick out as fast and violently as you can, and at the same time, bring the trailing leg up to chamber and twist kick out as well. Turn your body away from the side kick, and towards the twist kick, making the side kick more like a back kick that (like a blind kick). I hope that helps you some. Kind of hard for me to explain, so I hope it isn't too jumbled! Let me know if that helps some. I will play with the kick some more when I get back to training as well. -

My school does Gae-Baek as the second dan pattern. It is the one that I do currently. My school does Po-Eun as second dan recommended pattern. What is GTF Taekwondo? we do Gae-Baek, Kwang-Gae and Po-Eun in first dan, i think Po-Eun is very difficult for me to do nice. I cant do good double side kick in Kwang-Gae too. The key to making Po-Eun look good is to sloooow doooown the hand techniques, and make sure they are seperated out. I think some people try to go too fast, and it ends up being sloppy. You don't have to do each technique super slow, but just put a little pause between each hand technique to seperate them out. As for the repeating side kicks in Kwang-Gae, I do them quickly, and I don't really 'stick' either one of them. If I do stick one, it is the second one. You don't have to pivot the base foot too much for the low kick, and then you can use a little body motion to stick the second, high one. -
The ability to do what you have described above through the competitive venues of the MMA has probably become one of the best outcomes of things like the UFC and Pride. You can go into the MMA ring with minimal rules, and try what you want to see the results. This was especially true of the early UFCs, and the evolution that has come from this fighting genre has been amazing to watch.

I would prefer hand strikes to kicking myself, in self-defense. However, in sparring, I like to use both. In TKD, there are so many people who want to stand away and kick, and then just clinch when they get in close. When they try to clinch with me, they get a surprise!

That is cool information. Thanks for the clips. He looked like he had a pretty good defense against the takedown, and even had a triangle slapped in there once. His kicks are sharp and fast, and he has nice knee strikes, too. -

What rank is Juche done at, anyway? I don't think that my school does that form. -
The Chargers have got permission to speak with Ron Rivera from the Bears, and they have already, I think. They also got permission to speak with Singletary, and I think they did so today. I did hear that Rex Ryan was interested as well, as you said, and I think they will interview Jim Mora as well. There has also been talk about Norv Turner, who installed their current offensive system. Personally, from a team continuity standpoint, I think Turner would be the way to go, and attempt to hire Singletary or Ryan as a defensive coordinator. Does Ryan run the 3-4?

That is all good information, Baron. I can definitely see where this can come in handy. Thanks for sharing.
