Did anyone get to watch UFC 100? I did not, but I did read a bit on it, and saw some news and clips here and there. It looked like it would have been a good one to see. Unfortunately, the fights were downplayed by Brock Lesnar's "celebration" after his win over Frank Mir in the main event: http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news?slug=dw-lesnar071209&prov=yhoo&type=lgns I don't like or condone the way the Lesnar acted here. Apparently, neither did Dana White. Hopefully, Lesnar's actions after the fight won't be tacked as a stereotype for all other MMA fighters out there. Hard on the heels of this story, is the story of White nearly guaranteeing the signing of Fedor Emelianenko to fight in the UFC in the near future, and that the Fedor vs. Lesnar match will happen: http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news;_ylt=AigATsVW.ELhiP5NjDoIsgWtEo14?slug=mmajunkie-White_says_Fedor_Lesnar_imminent&prov=mmajunkie&type=lgns I would love to see this fight, too!

Yeah, I think that is true. Sad, but true. I know I won't allow any student to do that in any class that I teach.

Failing Tests
bushido_man96 replied to still kicking's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
I agree. At times, I think that failure is something that attempts are made to avoid in society these days, because of the "negative" effect it has on people. But, it is an experience that can be learned from, and I don't think that it is a bad thing. We shouldn't look forward to failure, but at the same time, we should come to understand that it isn't the end if we do. -
The Martial Artists' Training Log

I can see the benefit of drilling in this way. Very nice, indeed. 7-13-09 Weights Bench press: 225x1, 205x5, 135x10 I went back to the free weight bench today, and I could tell that I hadn't done it in a while. I hate that feeling... Cable row: 200x6, 7 fail Military press: 125x4, 5 fail Lat pull-down: 170x7, 8 fail Leg extensions: 160x10 Leg curls: 220x10 Barbell curls: 90x7 Triceps press: 215x10 Gripper: 30x15x3 Treadmill: 20 minutes of walking on incline. MA workout Combat Hapkido: 2:00 - 3:30. We worked on stringing a set of moves together. Right now, we are just in the memorizing phase. Afternoon Workout Bag work: 3 rounds, just punching. Dumbell punching - 5 pound dumbell in each hand: Jab: 3x10 each side. Cross: 3x10 each side. Here, I did the the dumbell punches in between the rounds on the bag. I really liked the way my arms, back, and shoulders felt the day after this workout. The only problem is that I need a heavier bag. 7-14-09 Aikido: Aikitaisos Shomen: 10 each side. Irimi: 10 each side. Tenkan: 10 each side. Combat Hapkido: 2:00 - 3:00. Stringing techniques together again. -
Cryptologist Cracks 200 Year Old Code in Letter to Jefferson

That is pretty cool. Thanks for sharing this. -
I agree with you, on both counts. But since maintaining a rank seemed to be a major concern, checking where organization clubs are located can increase the chance that you end up somewhere that a similar school is located. That's all. Playing the probabilities.

Forms that look more complicated/technical on the surface tend to be the ones that are performed more in tourneys. Wankan may be very complex, especially when digging into the bunkai, but a tournament performance of a kata isn't usually about the bunkai; its about the technical performance, and therefore, a percieved difficulty level.

I see the overuse of kihaps in Olympic TKD sparring. Its just kind of crazy. That, and the yells tend to get drawn out, too. I like to do very brief kihaps; very forceful expulsions of air. But, to each their own, I guess.

Well put. I think that sums things up very well. -
Side Kick Question
bushido_man96 replied to Tae Kwon DOH's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Seriously. I think we should try to video ourselves doing the different sidekicks we're talking about. All the text can be difficult to get through, and youtube can be a pain haha. I may be able to get something done on my end. Perhaps I can get the wife to help me out with it. My daughter is also pretty swift with all that uploading stuff, so she might be able to help, too. -
Thanks for the review, tg. I've seen some MMA gloves being sold at one of my local sporting goods stores, along with some bags, and may look into a pair.

That's why I think its good to be concerned with both. And I don't think that one has to be the strongest out there at all, either. I think that in the end, its a total package. Good fitness levels, along with skill levels, to make you the best that you can be. I'm with you on the "overweight instructor" bit. I'm only 5'8", and weigh in at about 240, and I'm not cut, by any stretch. I carry around the spare tire, and I can't run very fast, nor very far. But, I do what I can to improve my fitness levels, both for my MA career and for my work.
-
Ah yes, very good one as well.
-
I don't know about that for certain; an example would be a guy like Kimbo Slice. His fitness levels accounted for the brief level of success that he experienced in MMA. People are also fond of saying that "there is always someone stronger," but there is often always someone that is more skilled, as well.

Mas Oyama & the ITF
bushido_man96 replied to DWx's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
No worries, Kuma. I guess when I spar at my gym, I see more parallels because we don't have as many of the fancier kicks flying around, and the sparring is a bit more straightforward than most Olympic sparring. About as fancy as we get is a spin heel kick or spin side kick. -
Side Kick Question
bushido_man96 replied to Tae Kwon DOH's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Well, I'm having trouble following. Pictures truly are worth a thousand words, especially now, I feel... I'll have to see if I can find any clips that might give some clues to look at. I appreciate you trying to explain it, though. -
I agree. They are both important components to consider, especially for self-defense.

There are a lot of interesting points made here concerning Oyama's 300 man kumite. I do think that it is a great feat, just being able to continue fighting for that long. I don't have any feats of my own to list, unfortunately. Perhaps someday...

Weapons training vs. Doctor
bushido_man96 replied to baldwin11's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It is interesting to hear the reactions that different folks have to the unique injuries we may experience now and then. When I did my SCA fighting, I would come up with some very interesting injuries. Explaining them was always fun. -
I think that developing speed is an important aspect in the fighting arts. "Speed kills" is a popular saying, and it is a very good point. I don't think it is the only thing that makes or breaks a Martial Artist, though. I think that if you can work good strategy and timing, then what speed you have can be maximized.
