  1. after obtaining my black belt in tang soo do i have been concentrating on more of my judo recently and have been promoted from 5th kyu blue belt to 4th kyu green belt!
  2. although i do think younger students have talent when they obtain their blackbelt but i def. do not think they should teach adults, if they do teach they should teach younger ages then themselves but still with an adult instructor present. i know as an adult student i would not feel right being taught by anyone under the age of 18! i would just feel like i wasnt learning properly! even back in the traditional old days kids did NOT teach adults! so i guess you could say im more traditional about it. i agree with mma_jim and the brazilian jiu jitsu way about no one obtaining a black belt until 18!
  3. stick with it and you'll get better and better! train as much as you can and all the students may be more terrible than you! lol make sure you practice your drills a lot and your forms a lot! they may get boring but stick with it and you'll be getting better in no time!
  4. those are some good combos! dont forget kicking combos to! here are some i do: -jab, cross, roundhouse -jab, jab, front kick -lead roundhouse to leg, roundhouse to head -cross, jab, lead roundhouse -jab, lead hook, uppercut, clinch and knee -roundhouse, cross, jab, cross, roundhouse make sure you mix up the hitting locations, like hit to the head, body, and legs. but the best advice i can give is practice, practice, practice combos! they will win you the fight! try to keep ur combos at 3 or more strikes because the more u push the more they back and this will give u the opportunities ur looking for like those big KO's u see in the UFC
  5. well the best way to gain confidence in my opinion is just do more and more in sparring, dont be afraid to throw them, if you get hit you get hit just keep up ur guard and let em rip. throw roundhouses often. mix the kicks up in combinations, for example throw a jab, cross, roundhouse or cross, jab, cross, front kick. dont be discouraged that u r using a lot of punches they are very effective in sparring, also pratice more and more kicks on heavy bags, kick them hard and fast. do squats also to help build strength in ur legs so they will be faster. mix up ur stricking of the kicks location, kick to the head, body, and legs (alot if you can or if ur even aloud) i dont know to much about ur style goju ryu do they emphasize on kicking?
  6. welcome
  7. welcome
  8. i go twice a week to karate and 3-5 times a week to kickboxing
  9. combinations! lots of combos and variety! also dont stand in one spot stay mobile and if you get charged dont move backwards move side to side so u can counter attack!
  10. i started cuz i wanted to be able to defend myself as a child and now i still go cuz im training to fight in MMA
  11. well if they are qualified to instruct then i guess its ok but i can see where u r coming from. there is an issue at my school about making an age limit to receive black belt, cuz we have 9-15 year olds with black belt some of which were received in no more than 4 years when this schools testing schedule says it should be obtained in no less than 6 years. a lot of people here think the age limit to receive ur black belt should be 16
  12. my school goes from belt to belt but we have stripes on a few belts that just indicate rank 12th kyu- white 11th kyu- yellow 10th kyu- purple 9th kyu- orange 8th kyu- blue 7th kyu- blue w/ green stripe 6th kyu- green 5th kyu- green w/ red stripe 4th kyu- green w/ 2 red stripes 3rd kyu- red 2nd kyu- red w/ black stripe 1st kyu- red w/ 2 black stripes
  13. true it is. swimming works a ton of muscles in the body and burns a lot of fat but you wont build that 6 pack everyone wants without situps or crunches also
  14. also remember in boxing or kickboxing judges dont just judge on quantity but also quality. they judge on speed, power, damage, placement, control, and defense as well as quantity of attacks
  15. another thing would probably be damage. if the judges think ur kicks caused or would have caused (light kickboxing is light contact right?) then they may have looked at it as ur kicks did more damage then the other fighters punches
  16. our test for 1st degree in chun kuk do is about 3 to 4 hours long consisting of: -forms: keecho hyung il boo, keecho hyung e boo san gup, keecho hyung sam boo, pyung ahn cho dan, pyung ahn ee dan, pyung ahn sam dan, pyung ahn sah dan, pyung ahn oh dan, bassai dai, UFAF form 1, UFAF form 2, bo staff kata mahaba baston inyueza (is the best way i can spell it) -Street combative techniques -Weapon defense -Sparring -Jiu jitsu -judo takedowns i believe thats about it there is one thing that i dont agree with and that is there is no age requirement. we have 9 to 15 year old black belts, i believe we should have an age requirement of at least 16. im not denying their talents but i just think they are to young and received their belts to quickly. some within 4 years! but its not up to me UFAF wont change that
  17. for me i would say 1. pyung ahn sa dan 2. pyung ahn oh dan 3. Bassai Dai 4. UFAF form 2 5. Chinto hyung
  18. well there are different benefits to rope jumping and running with similar benefits. Different: rope jumping is good for training your agility and quickening ur feet. running (for long distant 3 or 5 miles or whatever) will give you better endurance than jump rope. similar: jump rope and sprints benefit your stamina or how well you last each round! while both are cardio you should probably do both because of the different benefits this way you can approve better. ive trained in boxing and kickboxing and we did both running and rope
  19. well ive been training for a while now but it seems the more i train the more i like pain and the more i use it to my advantage
  20. at my recent karate tournament i would run 3-5 miles a day rather that 2 miles a day to increase my endurance plus i just went to my studio more times a week and my instructor would help me more with my katas and that all worked
  21. sure it will work we had pads against a concrete wall at my karate studio and i hit it a lot without injury. make sure you use proper technique and you should be good
  22. but for some tips: do lots of pushups they will strengthen your punches, do like 2 or 3 sets of as many push ups u can do! also do a lot of crunches and sit ups! cuz if you dont have strong abs then you're going to get the wind knocked out of you alot when you get hit in the gut! also stretch alot to get flexible, just google search some stretching and even weight lifting techniques! but as far as learning to fight you're going to need a partner! you may be able to learn to hit on your own but another inportant part to fighting is learning to take a hit!
  23. i dont care who you are without an instructor you're not goin to learn much believe me i tried! books and videos can only go so far but there will be no one to tell what you're doing wrong! if you're unable to get access to friends to help or instruction then get books from your local book store! and go on youtube and search for vids but remember if its any good you're going to have to pay for it! also watch the UFC or some mixed martial arts events and study the fighters! but like i said you will not good without an instructor! also dont go by movies! they mislead you! everything in movies is staged and choreographed! but if you dont mind me asking, how old are you?
  24. i see a lot of people on here with knowledge in tae kwon do or jiu jitsu and that but i was wondering if anyone has trained in chun kuk do and is affliated with the united fighting arts federation?
