  1. I've looked at it but never really spent much time there.
  2. You remember the old Yogi Bear cartoons? Well, originally there was going to be two Yogis. Know what happened? ... They made a little Boo-Boo.
  3. This would be iffy, but I would think it would most likely turn out on the side of BB Joe. In Oregon as well, you are allowed to act in defense of another person. That being said, say Joe knocks this person in the head. The gun discharges and blows a hole in the cashier's head. Is he now responsible for the cashier's death?
  4. My advice, and this might seem a little strange, is to get hit. Once you get over the fear of being hit, it's a little easier to relax and go for it. This isn't to say you should be taking full force hits right off the bat, but medium contact isn't going to be too bad.
  5. Not to mention in this day and age, if you beat the tar out of this guy, what's to stop him from coming back later with a gun or a knife and really making things serious.
  6. OK... this is getting ridiculous. I have my belt test today, but I'm sick yet again. This makes four times in three months. I gotta love a work attendance policy that encourages sick people to come in to work and hack all over me. Well, I guess we'll see how it goes.
  7. It's not so bad to do, even at lower levels because it makes you think about the moves and what could be substituted. As long as you're not teaching the modified kata, or using it for tournament, just doing them for your own study shouldn't cause any harm. Just remember that you're building habits that might be difficult to break if you ever decide to get into the art that you're borrowing the kata from.
  8. From the beginning of eternity To the end of time and space To the beginning of every end And the end of every place. What am I?
  9. Welcome to the forums.
  10. I usually don't listen to any music when I meditate. When I do, the type of music I listen to depends on what I'm trying to accomplish. If I'm trying to pump myself up then techno or rock's the way to go. If I'm trying to calm myself, I listen to more mellow stuff. Usually there's no singing though.
  11. Used to read this site in my Judo days. Lots of good stuff, especially the humor.
  12. Being tough isn't about fighting. It is about being able to handle whatever life throws at you and keep on going. While traditional MA could be used for self-defense, they definitely suck for fighting -- because they instill self-discipline! The very thing that will keep you out of a "fight."
  13. Welcome to the forums.
  14. That's a really interesting website. The more I read, the deeper and deeper it drills down into different subjects. I'm going to read through it more thoroughly when I get home. Thanks.
  15. If you really feel like you know what you're doing, talk to your sensei and see what his policies are to challenging a level. In our dojo you are allowed to double test, but you can only go test for one rank higher than you would normally be testing for. Personally though, I'd wait for a couple of tests to make sure you know that you can get through them. You don't want to make a big deal about trying to rank jump and then not be able to pass the test.
  16. What is it that, after you take away the whole, some still remains?
  17. The Hanwei line by Paul Chen is absolutely great. They're a very expensive, but I've had a chance to actually try a dao before and it was a really solid sword and I felt worth the price. They make fantasy, European and Eastern weapons. You can find their swords at various places. http://www.thesteelsource.com/html/hanwei.htm http://www.discountcutlery.net/en-us/dept_21317.html http://www.martialartsmart.net/Hanwei_Forge.html
  18. Spear thrusts are very effective against the soft fleshy bits(throat, solar plexus, ect), but they take some conditioning if you want to use them against harder targets.
  19. I am weightless, but you can see me. Put me in a bucket, and I'll make it lighter. What am I?
  20. Practice sparring opposite foot forward from your opponent.(This is really fun when you find someone who really gets messed by it)
  21. You could also put those fake promotional credit cards that you get in the mail in there.
  22. I am an addict as well.
  23. Hey, if you're in position to use a kick, go for it. But you better know what to do if you can't kick. As baronbvp said, elbows and knees are great for close range. Standing bars and throws are also good if you're only dealing with one person. Just use what is appropriate to the situation and what works for you. Personally, I'm not going to throw a head kick. I'm not fast enough to get one off without leaving myself wide open for a few seconds during and afterwords. I'll hit him in the gut and when he's doubled over gasping, that's when I'll nail him in the head(if necessary).
  24. The man who founded Shito-Ryu was Kenwa Mabuni. Mabuni studied Karate with Itosu(Shorin-Ryu) than later with Higaonna(Goju-Ryu) He also studied Kobudo under Aragaki where he learned to use Bo, Sai, Tonfas, Nunchaku, Nichokama, Kusari-Kama, Nunte, and Tempe. Blending the methods of Shorin and Gojo, he came up with what he called "Hanko" or "Half-Hard style. Later he changed the name to Shito deriving the name from the alternate reading of the ideograms found in the names of his former teachers "shi" for the "ito" of Itosu and "to" for the "higa" of Higaonna.
  25. I was practicing a break for a demo and the person holding the boards flinched and lowered and angled the board so I smashed up my hand pretty good. Maybe I should ask if I can do my tonfa before the break in the demo.
