Somebody actually took some pictures of me and gave me copies. First pics I've had of myself in probably 3 years. This is from last weekend's AAU Oregon District Tournament. Kinda funny that I was wearing a green belt on St. Patty's Day.

Ah, to have that much time to spend on martial arts... I did notice that your profile said you've done some TKD in the past so it might not be as big a deal to take it up. Personally, I would only stick to two arts at most, but if you have the time and aren't worried about MA burnout then go for it. -
Depends on the school. I was sparring(poorly) about a week or two after I started.

Ah ok, seems I'm a coupla years out of date. That's ok... I just discovered the story about a month ago.

Well, I decided to go with Pinan Shodan for the tournament today. Managed 3rd with it. A lot of the people who watched me said it was a stronger kata for me than yodan, so I guess that's the one I'll go with for reigonals.

Gravity... It's the law.

Good advice here. Basically, burn enough calories and watch the fats and sugars and you should do fine. Some muscle building will augment your metabolism as well making you burn more calories. I find I like elliptical machines better than treadmills or running because it's easier on the joints. Swimming is great too.

Anyone study Law and Martial Arts?

Well, for starters, what state are you in? Or country for that matter. -

I'm not entirely sure that three arts at once is such a good idea. If you want to work on another art, drop one of your existing ones so you can concentrate more on your new one until you get a good understanding of the new art. -

I think this should be a thing that more dojos include. It's just as important to know when to use your skills as it is on how to use them. Another option is to review your state's laws on self-defense, they should be online somewhere. It's a bit difficult to digest them, but not impossible. The best bet though is to do what Bushido suggested and contact the police and ask if you can do an interview with someone. -
My thought is it depends on the dojo and the student. If the dojo harbors an "My art is better than your art" attitude or the instructor is a big ego case, then that's going to rub off on the students. However, there's ALWAYS somebody who's better than you. Doesn't matter how many first place trophy's you have or what rank you have. That fact keeps me from getting discouraged when I'm sparring someone better than me. I might not be able to hit this guy right now, but there's someone out there who can, which means that some day I might be able to as well.

I believe western broadswords were traditionally one handed and had a wide blade.http://www.swordsdirect.com/cold-steel-horseman-basket-hilt-broadsword.html Chinese broadswords(Dao) were one handed, single edged, curved weapons: http://www.swordsdirect.com/paul_chen_swords.html while straight swords(Gim or Jian) were thin, flexible double bladed weapons: http://www.wle.com/products/W451-T.html

It's possible, especially if she's the only one with a flashy gi in a sea of traditional ones. My suggestion is to keep a plain one on hand just in case. If everyone else is wearing different gis, great. Otherwise you'll have a backup if you need it.

I agree with most of what's being said here. It's important to talk to the sensei about this, he may be unaware of what's happening. If he is aware and is ok with it, you should probably be in another dojo. There's no place for that.

I agree. If it's safe, you actually have the responsibility to stay and render aid. It'll weigh in your favor when you're in court. Send a passerby for help and stay with the guy.(Makes you think that maybe you should know what to do to give first aid after a confrontation) This again with a big mention to the fact that it needs to be safe. You don't want the guy coming to and going at you again.

I'd say go for it. You might catch some political fallout(banning you from your org, stripping rank, ect) but paper really means nothing. He can't suck the knowledge out of your brain or anything, nor can he ban you from using that knowledge. That would be like going to a university, getting your degree, then having the school tell you you can't take a job in your field.

I've never really came across this. My guess is the use is to westernize martial arts a little bit more. Some people don't want to learn vocabulary in a foreign language.

Our school starts out at about 3 years to shodan. You can get your provisional within 2 years if you train hard, but it takes about a year from provisional to shodan. It really depends on how hard you train. Somebody who puts in a couple hours a day every day of the week is going to advance faster than someone who goes twice a week.

Me, I like camping and hiking in the summertime. In the winter, it's 3D modeling, reading, and tabletop rolepaying.
