My Instructor is also an amazing man. He got his black belt at 10 during a time when kids didnt get their Black Belts very often, and he has been on a path for knowledge ever since... He has acquire instructor rank from Burton Richardson in his JKD Concepts, he is a full instructor of Wing Chun under Francis Fong, he is a 5th dan Kukkiwon TKD from Edward Sell, and he is a Combat Hapkido Master under GM Pellegrini, along with rank in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and others...he has traveled extensively to train with various martial arts, and he is always on a path for righteousness... he has changed my life, and will continue to change others, I hope that someday I am half that man that he is!

I do recognize some of the forms... They are ITF (Internation TaeKwonDo Federation) forms, and i like them, they are very dynamic and really compliment the kicking art nicely... Good Luck on the test... Do you have probationary period after your test, or are you a confirmed Black Belt after this test.?

If I stay 'hyper'; meaning: If I try and stay motivated and if I try and keep my mind of sparring and forms...I can usually do pretty well.... It is funny, 15 years into it, and you never get over those crazy little fears...I have been teaching for 8 years...and I still get nervous when I have to test...(even tho it is every 5 years)

Do you kick to the head?
sk0t replied to koreantiger81's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
If it is a so-called WTF school, then something must be wrong...does he allow head kicks to the head for black belts. and does he allow light contact head kicks to the intermediate and advanced levels (below black)...because calling it a WTF school, and not abiding by the USTU standards is kinda fishy. I wonder what he is thinking.... Have you asked him..? Just make sure you ask in a way that is not questioning his teaching methods.... -
BRUCE LEE: Was he all that he was cracked up to be?
sk0t replied to sk0t's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think that he was a great martial artists...and allot of the advancements in the martial arts are due to him...but I dont think that he is what they all say he is...he was ahead of his time...but couldnt any one who dedicated enough time to working out, become the same... and what is with the 'serial killer' thing, where did that comparison come from!? -
I liked Black 2, i think that it was an excellent compliment to the first one...I dont think that it was as good as the first one and the FX were a little overdone..but that is what I want in a movie, I dont want to watch a movie and see them do the same stuff that I do in a karate school... It was good!

I think that whoever came up with the idea, which was "Greg Silva from the United Professionals", is a brilliant man...if any of you dont know who he is, you might want to look into his organization... he has made my school flourish with over 500 students, (and I am only 20 years old)...his ideas are unique and very good.... http://www.unitedprofessionals.com

I think that pacing yourself can be beneficial. Not during the kumite or gyoroogi part of the test tho.... Pacing yourself during Basic Fundamentals would be beneficial, because you can kick like you mean it, and still hold back.... just cause you dont kick to your head doesnt mean it isnt a good kick... I guess it all comes down to what style you do...cause in TKD, you need to pace yourself...800 kicks that are meant to be head leave, dont all need to be!

BRUCE LEE: Was he all that he was cracked up to be?
sk0t replied to sk0t's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I totally agree... Intent and application are equal tho...because his application is jsut as important as his intent...it is just the method to get there is just as complicated... -
This is not to say that I dont like Sifu Lee, because I do think that he was a pioneer in his own time...but you do you feel that is what everyone in the JKD world makes him out to be... Do you think that we should all mold our training around his... Just remember he didnt like traditional Martial Arts, and he bashed them quite frequently, and he also would fight at a whim... What do you think?

I also Zone out..I think that Zoning out adds an effect to the martial arts that you might not think of...once you get in the zone, whatever happens happens...you get the best workout...you get a more focused mind...and if you zone out at will...you will know what is wrong and right, without thinking...

Height Advantages in Grappling
sk0t replied to moobrack's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I think that it might not seem that way to some advanced practioners, but I think that it is...i am 6 foot 1 in, and I find it difficult to roll around with people who are taller than I...for some people it might be easier to grapple with taller people, because there is more of a chance to grab the arm and arm bar, or leg lock or any of the different finishing moves, but being tall has its advantages and disadvantages...it just depends... -
My first lesson...
sk0t replied to Seth's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Congrats on your Jiu-Jitsu training, I dont think taht you have answered what type you do... Brazilian or Japanese...because the spelling you give is some indicator.... and for your reference... KYU mean grade level...not lower! -
Mixing.
sk0t replied to superleeds's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I agree with monkey...I have been doign the Martial Arts for 15 years and i am 20 now, and I feel as tho I have only scratched the surface in 1 art... Granted i train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Combat Hapkido and TaeKwonDo. I started with the TKD, then moved to the Jiu-Jitsu, and now work out in all three during the week...and I feel as tho, being somewhat talented it is easy to work with these 3 because they all compliment eachother in what one style lacks the other 2 can compliment... But starting with 2, unless you they are opposites will only hunder your production... -
I have trained with the same instructors my whole life... and being an instructor under some of the best instructors I have ever met has made teaching allot easier... The most important thing in an instructor to me is if he can change me somehow...my instructor changed my life...I am 20 years old now and own a profitable school with about 500 kids...and without the instruction of some of the best...I wouldnt be where I am today!

Sparring is a delicate subject when it comes to the Martial Arts, because some teach it differently than others. If you teach WTF TKD Sparring, light contact to those practioners might seem like a lack of training, and to ITF TKD people, Full Contact might seem excessive and dangerous...now to a Karate person light contact is the way to go... It all depends on what style you do and what you prefer...some light contact styles will allow full contact if both competitors agree...and some wont...it is all up to you and your instructors... But I agree with the others...start soft and learn what to do first, then you can pick up the pace and turn up the heat...

HaHaHa...luckily my martial arts is allot better than my typing skills...I appreciate the humor that you can find in my lack of skill in the typing arena... for retributions sake... HEAVY BAG!

We have what we call "Bring a Buddy, Break a Board" night. We charge like 5 dollars a kids, and let them brek like 5 boards...per kid...and that 5 dollars goes a long way since wood isnt that expensive... We have generate a ton of interest with that...it works. But you just gotta try.

When you are working out, try different things, like instead of jogging, do sprint drills, and instead of kicking a heavy back. grab a buddy or vice versa...the most important thing is the have fun, get a radio or something to motivate you, play your favorite music. Try anything...it cant hurt!
