Does anyone train in JKD? I do and I am just looking to see what you guys do?

In a street fight, I, personally, feel that it is unwise...the fight wont last long enough for a head kick to come out... in a street fight, he who unleashes first, unleashes last!

BRUCE LEE: Was he all that he was cracked up to be?
sk0t replied to sk0t's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree with LeaF....i think that Bruce has accomplished things that 'not everyone' could do...but there are some who have accomplished more...Bruce never fought for anything...pride, respect, and valor, reputation, those are not valid reasons...other fought for their lives... His training was unique, and his thoughts were educated...but his OPINIONS, were just that, his OPINIONS... YOu have yours...I have Mine, and it will continue that way until the end of time! -
Good Luck karatekid...

Thinking of Doing TKD!
sk0t replied to El Guerrero Loco's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Remember you cant judge the style, just the man! -
Just workout your legs, and workout your upperbody, and get your hips strong, and when you turn your hips into a solid kick it will be like a sledgehammer

Height Advantages in Grappling
sk0t replied to moobrack's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I dont think that it matters who you train with...I think that grappling is grappling...part of the process is adapting to your surrounding...if you train with a short person, it will be different than with a tall... That is why people say your training is going to a different level, when you can make those calls in the middle of sparring....without thinking... EX: going over on short people and under arms for tall people... but in Jiu-Jitsu, weigh doesnt matter... I will grapple with someone 50 pounds heavier, and gullotine them with out thinking...and I will grapple with someone shorter, and get armbarred...so it doesnt matter to me... Technique is what it is all about...but without technique, it is strength and weight all the way... -
Thinking of Doing TKD!
sk0t replied to El Guerrero Loco's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I think that any martial art is better than nothing... The most important thing is learning....we can learn in anything we do... TKD and Thai practioners are the best kickers, and karate people punch, Judo and Jiu-Jitsu are best on the ground, Hapkido and Aikido for the locks, kung fu for the spiritual... everything has a specialty...but that doesnt make it the only thing that it is good with... It is just what people see... -
Congrats...

First of all to begin, you have to be good. Then you must win at the state level...from there, you move on to the National Level, then you move on to the team trials, and then you make the National team, and then you fight in some international tournaments with them keeping track of your record...and then you go to the Olympic Team Trials...next you make the Olympic team...then you fight round robin, to make the cut of the 8 people all together who make it to the Olympics

I think that the title 'Master', although not used in America with proper reulatory standards, still should be used. But only for Instructors... A normal student who doesnt teach and makes it to 4th dan...automatically gets called Master.. BLAH!

Height Advantages in Grappling
sk0t replied to moobrack's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
In Jiu-Jitsu it shouldnt matter how strong you are...or even how tall you are... Helio Gracie is a short man, and he is considered a very skilled practioner... Technique should be the key...not height, strength, or weight! -
I think that "Master" should be a term that you are grandfathered into by your instructor... In some arts (like you said) once you hit 4th or 5th dan you are considered a Master. I think that Master is a term for instructors who have been certified or 'grandfathered' into it... And for some...I dont think that time limit can denote how someone is called a master... If I have done it for 10 years, and acquired my 4th dan...I am not a master...but if I have been teaching since 1st dan, and my instructor feels that I have acquired enough knowledge to call myself 'Master' then that is his right, and he can pass that on to me as he sees fit.... This quest to become master shouldnt be one that is taken hastily...because with the title Master, you will have a responsibility to know what you are doing and know what you are talking about... Age has no bound when it comes to the martial arts...once you are above 15 (IMHO) I feel that you are old enough to learn what the martial arts has to teach... This is not to say that under 15 should learn 'karate' because I think that 3 is a good age to start teaching life skills (teamwork, friendship, Paying attention)... 'Master', should not be taken lightly and unfortunatly it is!

What do your black belts look like? Anyone?

Does this mean that you are a full Black Belt now...or are they deciding on that now?

Mixing.
sk0t replied to superleeds's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I think that by doing 2 martial arts that fill in the void you can get the bigger picture of the martial arts...you can become 'well-rounded'... Ex: ground fighting and stand-up -
I agree with Team Havok, exept it is obvious that you are a beginner, and training in more than one style is hrad when you are a newbie....so I recommend training for atleast a year, in the style that you are in. Then move on to something different...but dont forget your roots. For they gave your habits, and taught the beginning of things!

Do you kick to the head?
sk0t replied to koreantiger81's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Well...i disagree with you Monkey. KoreanTiger, are you getting other benefits, sport fighting is totally different that self-defense. If you are getting good self-defense then kicking to the head might not matter. But if you like the aesthetic aspect of sparring, then Monkeys suggestion might be more applicable... You should take the time to see if it is work staying...dont make hasty decisions based on the ones we give.... Consider asking why? You never know unless you try!
