EDIT: *This is a response to an earlier post.* You confuse power with strength. The ability to benchpress, for example, a lot of weight does not translate into power when hitting. Because you can PUSH a lot of weight does not mean you can PUNCH a lot weight. There are different mechanics involved. A punch and a kick are nothing of the similiar to lifting heavy weights. This is not to say one should not develop strength. A strong body is requisite for the true martial artist. But, for the scope of this topic it is a misconception to believe that the ability to lift a lot of weight is what is responsible for power in strikes.

Let me tell you a story: A lion was walking a mountain path that lead to the peak of a very high mountain. As he walked the path he crossed a skunk who was sulking off in the shade of a tree. As the lion passed the skunk the skunk took notice and called out to the lion. The lion continued walking his path ignoring the skunk. The skunk became agitated and challenged the lion to a fight. He called out to the other animals in the forest to come watch as he would defeat the lion. The lion continued walking, paying no attention the skunk. This angered the skunk who began calling the lion a coward and questioning the position of the lion as king of the forest. The lion kept walking. The skunk soon got tired of trying to fight the lion and returned to his shady spot, claiming victory over the cowardly lion, shouting out to the animals in the forest that he was the one that should be king. The lion kept walking his path never giving attention the skunk. If you were the lion what would you have done? Do you think the animals of the forest believed the skunk's claim of victory? Why? Why do you think the lion didn't fight the skunk? Could it have been because he was busy or was there some other reason? Ponder that.

what to do against a opponet wildly swinging?
Martial_Artist replied to Rock-fght's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Opponent swinging wildly? First, laugh at him (or maybe her--just to be PC). Second, regain composure. Third, defeat said opponent very quickly and even easily. Fourth, continue with first step. Season to taste. Repeat as needed for other useless opponents who might be utilizing same useless attack scheme. ...bones break, men bleed; the ability to feel pain does not remove the effect of the damage... -
Any style that doesn't want chop-suey students when teaching sword techniques.

My two young sons like Star Wars so I'll be taking them to the theatres, but not until the lines cool down. And, unfortunately, that means no midnight showings... I personally, having watched the movies with my kids, enjoy the Obi-Wan v. Vader fight in the 1977 movie. That is a cool fight.

A "combat" worthy blade will cost more than a couple hundred. I suggest thinking along the lines of 1000 USD or more. Knights Edge, Kris Cutlery to name a couple sell carbon steel, but this is not "combat" steel. More or less stage steel. Ritter steel is bad too. A good blade one that will last and is more than a cheap carbon steel one will cost you money. I suggest investigating https://www.bugei.com. From there you can find links to not only the swords they sell, but to a sword forum where you can find details on other swords. Traditional japanese swords, antiqued authentic made from japanese steel run average of around 15,000 USD and claim to much, much higher. An entry level sword runs around 900 USD. If you are serious about swords don't waste your time with 120USD to 150USD cheap carbon steel blades or worse the useless stainless steel blades. Save your money and buy a real blade. There is no comparison in quality and workmanship. I mean no comparison. https://www.swordforum.com is great resource to learn about different swords. You have makers, finishers, and all sorts of people who focus on swords. Japanese, chinese, european from all over the world. And there is always a debate over the katana versus *insert sword type here*. MA

Since martial arts is a large portion of who I am, who I was raised to be, almost all of my "extra-curricular" hobbies are related: Reading, mostly non-fiction martial texts. Firearms. Wilderness survival. Bow hunting. First-Aid for the Professional Rescuer Guitar playing. Writing. And aside from that I love playing around with my two young sons and going for drives with my wife and kids.

I train with knife, stick, and gun(among a variety of other archaic arms for fun). I carry two of the aforementioned with me. What is not applicable in your opinion? Ninja? I laugh. If you want to see real ninja watch "Duel to the Death".

I own a compaq right now. Laptop. Been a good little machine. However, I'm switching to the mac platform. There's so much with os x tiger, even panther. I want a power mac g5 dual processor for home and a powerbook for fun.

Buffy Kick- What is it?
Martial_Artist replied to Assassin_with_sais's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I didn't see it. I just envisioned, based on the description of 'Buffy' rolling backwards while doing it. However, I could be wrong. It could just be a jump split kick.... -
Buffy Kick- What is it?
Martial_Artist replied to Assassin_with_sais's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
A somersault split kick? I don't think this is style specific. mAYBE a flipping monkey kick. I've seen chimps flip around and look like they're doing that too. -
Middle of the ocean, unarmed, bleeding heavily and surrounded by starved and rabid sharks. Defense...... Prayer?

racism in the martial arts
Martial_Artist replied to blaze78_9's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yes there is. It assumed that all chinese do kung-fu. That all japanese do karate. That all filipinos do arnis. That all blacks do boxing. That all Thai do kickboxing. That all whites (particularly Irish) box. Shall I go on? There is little more annoying than hearing the assumption that because you are of a particular racial background that a certain martial art is your "people's". Or that everyone from that nation or race is versed in such art. The reality of the situation is more westerners put focus on the martial arts than the majority of people from those countries the art originated. -

Could you beat a street fighter?
Martial_Artist replied to STR33T GUY's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Answer to topic question: Yes. -
I bow hunt bull elk, mule deer, and an occasional whitetail. I don't really like rifle hunting. I was raised bow hunting and a rifle hunt just doesn't feel the same. Good to see so many avid hunters.

Four Rules of Gun Safety. 1. The gun is always loaded. (Always treat a gun as if it is loaded.) 2. Never point the gun at anything you do not want to destroy. 3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire. 4. Be sure of your target and what's behind it.
