At my karate school the test is very secret. No black belt would tell me what the test consists of, nor will any who have tested and failed. Not even my friends :/ But The prep for the test alone takes several months... I'm not in a hurry to get a black belt in shorin ryu karate though. for me it's all about the wing chun EDIT: I was just reading the post right before this one about... ya black belt tests. lol sensei rick did you defy him on purpose?

I don't feel like reading all the replies so this might have already been said anyway if you want to toughen your hands you can get a bag and fill it up with sand then punch it, chop it, hit it with ur fingers (tiger claw) panthers fist etc. then eventually you can get another bag and fill it up with marbles, punch the marbles really softly because they hurt like crazy if you havn't done a lot of toughening. I read one person was asking what is the point of hurting yourself to improve yourself? Once my instructor said that when toughening, with any part of your body (knuckles, legs, forearms etc.) At first your body will be bruised. Then your body will send messages to your brain making your body stronger. (sort of a self preservation thing) So I have pretty much been going under that philosophy since.

I was sparing and I fell for a shoulderthrow. Long story short I broke my fall wrong and fractured my left hand. At least I think it's a fracture. I have no idea. At first the doctor said sprain. Then they called back after reviewing x-rays and said fracture. I guess I need to go back over there for some kind of evaluation but what I need to know is. 1.If it is a fracture/sprain is it a good idea to attend classes (including wrestling) 2. If it's a fracture/sprain how long is the MINIMUM I need to rest it 3. any tips on healing it? 4. any way I could identify whether it is a fracture or a sprain?

This is a huge issue for me. I am always doing wing chun practice or some kind of heavy arms practice. I am used to clashing arms with more advanced students at my dojo every day. Now I started wrestling at my school and it seems that I am not going soft enough with everyone. Whenever I heard somebody was taking martial arts I used to be like "hey lets clash arms" and I would go fairly easy the next day most of the people I clash with end up having real bad bruises all over their arms. Conclusion: Never offer to clash arms. And if your friends get hurt teach them some qi gong or w/e it is u to do strengthen yourself.

if you throw up in their eyes then taking them out should be easy. And 10 3-minute rounds? Im guessing your not training for real self defence. I have never been in a fight that lasted over 3 minutes. I am starting to have my doubts your sensei Im not an instructor yet though so I wont say anything

Do V-Neck Uniforms Fit Obese People?
pepto_bismol replied to liquidkudzu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
admit it... we all know you are the obese one jk, Why don't you just give them the option for both v-neck and cross over? -
wow throwing up is an automatic fail. I think that's really unfair. I used to throw up all the time during 4 hour work outs and a lack of food. Passed more then I failed though. I think if you hold your own in sparring and know your forms really well a little bit of... colored liquid shouldn't be a big deal Did you ever ask your instructors why throwing up is an automatic fail, that's really the first time I heard of that.

sounds like you have a good instructor

search karate schools in your area?
pepto_bismol replied to shinnekodo's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
advertising? A way for students to contact you? And if a student sees you sitting around drinking soda when your supposed to be training just say you were working on your site -

2.0 for school sports?
pepto_bismol replied to pepto_bismol's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I did talk to my science teacher. In fact I did more then talk, I pleaded, I negotiated, I begged. I tried to get him to reason with me. He hates me anyway. I tried talking to him. When I was done begging he yelled "GET OUT OF MY FACE" I backed up and tried talking and he said "GET OUT OF MY CLASSROOM"! His face was really red and I didn't want to be disrespectfull so I left. But there is nothing I can do except talk to the dean and that's what im going to do. (the teacher is new, im sure he wont stay at my school very long) -
At my school we need a 2.0 in order to do wrestling. I was only failing one class and I kept above a 2.0 somebody messed with the grades in my science class (on his computer) so he failed 20 out of 32 people in the class (all the suspects and ya that includes me) now I have below a 2.0 so this sort of brings me to my next point. Do you guys agree that you should maintain a 2.0 in order to participate in after school sports? Me and the captain both don't have grades so our school is really going to miss out :/ I don't want to go to far off topic so I will just end my post now so can somebody please post whether they agree or disagree with 2.0 rule and why EDIT: maybe I should of posted this in ground fighting section. Srry didn't see it. Anyway this applies to all types of martial arts that might be tought (they tought boxing in 70's but still needed 2.0)

martial arts in publi schools could it work?
pepto_bismol replied to RDsynMBZ's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
one year exp. is deffinately not enough years to "teach" karate esspecialy in high school and only grade 10. NEVER advertise you know any martial arts. That just opens you up for fights and the chances are some kids know things you don't. If you want martial arts do wrestling. Your school does have a team, right? The whole idea of trying to "teach" martial arts. I don't know what kind of school you go to but at my school you would get yourself in so much trouble. When I was in junior high I used to talk karate, think karate, breath karate. Untill one day I got in a fight and got dropped. That is when I develloping new ways of thinking such as 1.white belt mentality" 2.be humble" 3.martial arts is like your credit card number. Keep it secret or your in a lot of trouble. but trying to teach martial arts in high school could be really funny. Imagine a new way for kids to fight with other kids. Actually I think I am going to challenge my science teacher to a fight at my dojo right away EDIT: and in China some schools are required to teach martial arts (saw it on the news a while ago.) -
Many other magazines, including Inside Karate, Karate Illustrated and Karate/Kung-Fu Illustrated, have gone the way of the dodo bird. Both the internet and cable/satellite television have done a number to the print industry, but specialty mags/newspapers still find their niches. wow I have both inside karate and karate illustrated now ppl can go on to a website and get so much info. I see how it could be hard for magazines to keep up

Bad Judges
pepto_bismol replied to Pogo's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
great... a new excuse to add to my list. Reasons I lose tournaments: 1. Allergic to Onions in peoples breathe 2. He is Qi vampire 3. I had an extremely bad case of dierria 4. He was a super saiyan 5. I was going to hit him but the floor was slippery, so I fell kicked him in the groin and got disquallified 6. No I was NOT carrying a weapon in my belt "hides switchblade" and now 7. BAD JUDGES!!! ( I am not making fun of this post at all, I know there is going to be corruption in every area of life, but to focus on it is sort of negative and not really productive. ) -
Insight on Double Promotion
pepto_bismol replied to ItalianMuayThai's topic in Instructors and School Owners
if you were a black belt in several styles or if you were an instructor and you decided to join a differant karate school, don't you think it would be unfair to start you as a white belt because when all of the other students would be struggling to kick to the head you would be busy throwing butterfly kicks and working on your kumite skills. I mean once your a black belt, your a black belt. I don't think it would be fair to you or any of your peers. ( I don't know if I presented my idea right but hopefully you guys get what I am trying to say) -
my sifu likes to call wing chun "the great mixer" (you might see my call it the great mixer in later posts) all you need for wing chun is to understand the concept of the centerline, be efficient with center line punches, sticky hands and the Siu Nim Tao and you should be set. Kickboxing or some korean kicking martial arts would be deffinately great for mixing!

Sticky Hands
pepto_bismol replied to Jay's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
get a p2p and search wing chun, wing tsun, jeet kun do, sticky hands, chi saou (is that spelled right) something will pop up or you can just go on ebay and actually BUY it -
I am really kind of interested in the differant ranking systems in differant styles so can ppl post what the order of belts is and the style only system I take with ranking system is shorin ryu so i'll post the order here rank order: white yellow orange green 2 degree green blue 2 degree blue purple (only if under 16) brown black (after black you can go up to 10th degree, only nominated 10th degree if dead with some exceptions)
-
wow thats pretty interesting, I think im gunna start a thread on how belt ranking systems go. For me it's white yellow orange green 2 degree green blue 2 degree blue purple (only if under 16) brown black yellow yellow/black orange orange/black purple purple/black green green/black blue blue/black brown brown/white brown/black black
-
I don't understand how are you a green/black belt level does ur dojo skip blue and brown? For me the choice would be obvious. Go to the school teaching Goju Ryu, Kung Fu and Ju Jitsu shorin ryu is weak in the ground fightin and you could use the ju jitsu, and learning some kung fu or qi gong deffinately can't hurt.
