  1. Even after that I'd still advise any1 to use it before any weapon. Its a defensive tool. Plus, not everyone can handle a weapon well enough to use it to stop an attack. Pepper spray is just point and spray. Plus there are other types that are not as bad and have a shorter effect. The second reason is this. If someone carries and uses a weapon like a 6 foot retractable bo, knife, gun, kobutan, night stick, etc... and acidently kills someone what happens then. If your a trained martial artist, you may go to jail, and there are posable comebacks from gangs, or the attackers friends. Its not worth the hastle.
  2. Ok sorry guys, Just thort It migh be a good Idea to have as a referance for noobs. On other forums noobs ask the same Q's over and over and I thort it may save time.
  3. For pecks - Isometric would be machine fly, standing up. compound would be bench press. biceps - Iso, prone incline cable curl. Comp, standing bi curl, or lat pull down. the main one legs... Iso, calf raises, quad extentions, ham curls, tib ant curl, glute puck backs. Comp, squats. I am a fan of both types of training, but tend to do more iso workouts cos I can pick and choose what I want to work on a particular day. I also seem to get back pains when I deadlift (muscular on spinal) so Id rather work core seperatly. What is better for strength?
  4. Snake creeps down > punch to seven starts
  5. Doesn't have to be Martial Arts related but have a go. I got a couple to start you off. How many Ninja does at take to change a light bulb? none... we will wait in the dark.... ready to strike!!!! how many Kung fu guys does it take to change a light bulb??? 101... 1 to change it, the other 100 all say "now we do it slightly diffrent"
  6. A bo is a terrible self defence weapon!!!!! If byself defence you mean that your being attacked, then you cant get out your 6ft recractable bo and start swinging it about. If your attacked I doubt anyone will give you time or space to use something like that. I have a shark shaped bottle opener on my keys, its got a blunt point and is 1inch longer that my hand is wide. It makes a great kobutan. The best waepon against an attacker as anything hard and avalible that you take everywhere. Hovever if you live in a ruff place and there is a bigger chance of you being attacked I would advise pepper spray and/or a horn. There is nothing girly about it at all. Its a great self defence tool. A squirt of pepper spray and a swift kick to the knee is far better than a law suit against you for GBH.
  7. If your starting out I would not advise "online training" Its more for ppl who have a good background in MA and want to look at other systems. If you cant get to a class, I'd say the best way to better condition your self is to exersise, lift weights ( if your old enough) and lightly spar with a friend or someone older in your family. remember that 1st you will need big soft gloves and always take it easy!!! Exersise alone can give you muck better reaction time, the best sports for martial arts would be squash, babminto, etc... for change of direction and bursts of speed. football for tacktics and fittness. swimming for breath control. lastly I would say golf for body control.
  8. I voted for impossible to determine. However I depends what you mean by "no fighting experiance". I had trained in wado ryu since I was 9 and untill I was 17 I had not been in a fight, however I had wrestled and sparred in class, and used punch bags, focus pads, and practised Kumite. When I was in a fight after 8 year of training I did pretty well, I didnt take any hitts, and took down three guys. The guys were pretty big and a few years older than I was. But If you mean that the MA guy had never hit a hard target or sparred then I'd say the street fighter
  9. Right then... Who likes what and why. Ive seen some forums get pretty messy over this one before. Personally I do 6weeks isometric then 2weeks compound.
  10. Check out the olimpic website for Beijing 2008, Wushu is one of the guest avents. As ppl have said its like gymnastics, dance and Kung fu all in one. Jackie Chan did wushu.
  11. Guys!!!! We dont want to fill this up with diets and training logs, just post wether you think its a good idea so we can have our own weight training forum. We just need lots of ppl to say yes.
  12. Thats cool, Im not so fussed about body building, and that lot are not usually interested in talking about martial arts. I thort this would be the best place to start. Cool, Come one everyone!!! Even If you dont care its only gonna take a second to reply with a yes!!!!!
  13. sorry Comp= Competition
  14. Hi, I'm from South East England. Ive trained in a lot of diffrent clubs over the last 12 yrs and have my black belt in Wado Ryu. However the only 2 styles I am aware of are Wado Ryu and Shotokahn. tho since reading this forum ive heard many diffrent names mentioned like shoto ryu, that Ive never heard of. Im gonna be really cheeky and ask for some one to give me, and everyone else a breakdown of the main types of karate. The name, Origin and just a few words about how to recognise it. I hope everyone can take this seriously as I feel it would be a good referance place for many people. Thanks
  15. just phone up the instructers and ask for privite lessons. You'll get more out of 1on1 tuition that you will from a class. Then make the classes whenever you can. Thats what I used to do when I worked a lot of nights. Most instructers are happy to do 1on1 classes cos its good money. If your looking for a club, join a club where the sensei is a full time instructor, not just someone who works in the day and teaches a class once a week. You fond there are much better teachers, are less stressed and better martial artists. Nothing against part timers. you understand.
  16. Hi, guys. Not trying to cause any friction here just intersted in others points of view. I have always thort of comp fighting as a "sport", like boxing. Not a martial art. I feel that My karate would be no good in a comp fight cos my reactions tell me to go for the vital points, witch would be hard with gloves on! and on the other side I feel that a comp fighter would be no good in a real fight as they would not have the correct defence, due to there vitals usually being covered up. How do you guys feel about this. I'm not tring to p1ss ppl off, just want to know if there are any benefits to comp fighting. And if comp fighters feels what he/she does as a martial art or a sport.
  17. Hi, guys. I was wondering if there were many guys(or girls) here that are in to weight training. I feel its a very important part of my karate. I must stress I am in to weight training and not body building as many people get mixed up. Anywho... I was thinking that if this topic gets enough positive interest I could pass it on to the admin staff and hopfully get a "weight training in martial arts" forum. we can post about weight programs, how it affects karate, positives, negatives, diets and stuff like that. I feel that it would help stop that same Q's coming up over and over and newcomers can use it as referance. Come on guys!!!! make some noise!!!!!!!!
