  1. okay, bad analogy time. any martial art can be looked on as a lock. all you have to do is find the key. (the only problem is that there might not be a key) i always took his post as being a theoretical point, not a factual point. you seem to have taken it the wrong way.
  2. y'know, i've never actually put the two together like that. now that IS a good question. if everyone trains in the same way (so to speak), would there emerge a 'better' type of martial art? oooh, i can see arguments brewing...
  3. y'know, i just thought that when he said the 'correct art' he meant that someone with the appropriate knowldege and skill could do it, not that there is or isn't a 'correct art' per se. y'know, johnny, you should lighten up a bit. you always sound so aggressive...

  5. whoa, what do you mean "helpful if you want to block and throw, block and counterattack"? if you've blocked in the first place, you ARE going to want to follow with something... anyway, one time when i've been in a 'fight' the other guy was just hanging his fist in the air trying to get a shot in after missing the first one and seemed very reluctant to use his left hand to hit. some people have no idea just how close you have to be to hit someone. probably my luck to run into someone who didn't know how to fight.
  6. i still say it boils down to how you train in the martial art. we've said before that just because you are practicing a 'superior' martial art, it doesn't mean that you are a 'superior' fighter. i think the same applies to combative martial arts. just because your style is combative, does it make you a combative martial artist? hmm, i know that sounds really wrong but somewhere in that mess of a post, is my point....
  7. well, to keep things simple i was only talking about actual physical aspects. otherwise we open up a whole level of argument that i see would only confuse the matter.
  8. no ofence mate but you keep posting little comments that have no real 'filling'... how about you give an explantion of why instead of just saying that it is. without giving us an idea of why, we can't discuss.
  9. i think that i) they are for training in strength in that position; that is the reason for sitting in stances. ii) they are to train mobility; that is why you train moving from stance to stance slowly. the more you do it, the more natural they become and the quicker you can do it and the stronger you are at doing it. it's generally a given that the lower your centre of gravity, the more stable you are. BUT you don't want to be low for too long because it affects your mobility. you go into stances when you need to. (drop into crossed leg so you can spring into bow+arrow or so you can turn out for backfist)
  10. that came out bad... what i mean is, a block isn't a fixed thing. it is alive and it adapts. really, it is an INDICATION of how you should be doing things according to things like body structure, position to opponent, type of entry etc etc. that's why you have to train. it's easy to do a blocking movement in isolation, in a training hall, against a single move. it is however, a different matter when it is a harder attack from an opponent who isn't going to give you any quarter. the blocks work. the exercises/tests in isolation prove that (the body structure etc is correct). you just have to get that same 'feel' EVERY time you do that block, not just in the training hall. sometimes maybe the fault isn't in the technique....

  12. maybe they're just lazy. after all, if they're learning the 'best' they won't have to WORK so hard to be the 'best'...
  13. i don't like it when people talk about blocks in any martial art as being a 'static' thing. as far as i'm aware, blocks are movements and the 'static' image is just a position that the arm might end up in. there is motion before and after that image that people seem to ignore when discussing this.
  14. well, i'm not a big fan of people who make posts like that... sorry, i know it's not my place but if wanted to know, i would've asked. AND it's kinda like making an assumption that we don't know and you do. it just strikes me as being kinda arrogant sounding. AND please stop posting back to back. especially short posts like that. there is a little edit button, please use it. sigh, i really do sound like an old man don't i...?
  15. julliene is the name given to the process of cutting really thin slithers of vegetables as well as the resulting slithers themselves, kinda like a crudite but a little thinner...

  18. let me get this right. you don't attend any martial arts class. you don't train. so what are you basing your judgement on?

  22. you have no idea the kinda image i now have in my head of you.... or the crazy assed moves i can imagine with a beard like that!
  23. on a slightly different note, that.... 'aroma' that the standard mats aquire after a while. is there a way to prevent or remove?
