How many times a week do you train in martial arts?
Shorin-Ryu Karateka replied to greenpaulo's topic in Health and Fitness
2 formal training sessions a week in the dojo and then I try to do 30 minutes to an hour every day at home on non-formal days. -
Shorin Ryu as it relates to kung fu question
Shorin-Ryu Karateka replied to krunchyfrogg's topic in Karate
I had always heard that the Shorin-Ryu style had it's ancestry in the White Crane style of Kung Fu. -
The only real things that get me scared are something happening to my wife and kids that I have no control of.

Hmm.. that's a tough question.. I like so many MA movies and for so many reasons. When I was a kid the American Ninja movies (cringes) were one of the reasons I started MA. As a teen I discovered Bruce Lee via Enter the Dragon and was instantly hooked. Jet Li is of course a phenom to watch especially early in his career. Jackie Chan may be considered the 'clown prince' of MA movies, but if you actually watch he has some of the best control and technique on film. Then there's Chuck... Or Mr. Norris to you.. who seemed to bring the genre to American soil and do it without ever cracking a smile. So I guess I'm going to have be a wuss and say that I can't even begin to come close to picking a favorite since there are so many to choose from. It'd be like having to pick a food for the rest of your life... Couldn't do it.

Chuck Norris's World Combat League (WCL)
Shorin-Ryu Karateka replied to TAZ's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
Was this event supposed to be on pay per view because I never saw a single promotion and I probably would have purchased just for the novelty. -
They'll probably run another encore this weekend on Saturday. I don't know for sure though.

Well last night during Ultimate Fight Night 3 on Spike TV Dana 'Freakin' White announced that in May Matt Hughes will defend his title against the man himself Royce Gracie. I'm interested in your thoughts regarding who you think will win the fight and how you think they'll win. Personally I'm on the fence. Both are truly incredible fighters and both will definitely be bringing their 'A' game to this, so I think it's going to go to the judges as a coin flip. Either that or one of them gets very lucky early and gets a submission. What do you all think?

The Illustrated guide to breaking your computer
Shorin-Ryu Karateka replied to Jeet Kune Do's topic in General Chat
What I want to know is what the heck does that have to do with breaking a brick?... -
One time we were doing progressive stretching and I ripped the butt out of my gi. Granted it was like 5 yrs old and was ready to go at any time... We've also had the classic fart slips in class a few times as well but everyone just pretends it didn't happen and moves on...

Ultimate fighter!
Shorin-Ryu Karateka replied to Ben Martin's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
I have watched both seasons and am really looking forward to the third. I hadn't head that Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock were going to be the coaches... I'll have to look into that. As for the show, I agree that it has a pretty good motivating affect on me as well. -
What style is the *least* physically intensive?
Shorin-Ryu Karateka replied to krunchyfrogg's topic in Health and Fitness
Tai Chi Chuan might be a good choice. The method is the same as 'normal' Tai Chi but it teaches more of the fighting aspect. -
I think the biggest problem with many MA related injuries is that we tend to get back into the dojo before we are fully healed and end up aggraviting the injury and often times end up making it worse. Usually when your doctor tells you you'll be feeling better in a couple of weeks they mean for regular day to day activities, not for high intensity training. Talk to your doctor about your training and you'll probably get a different answer about how long it will take before you're ready to be back at 100%.

You're definitely no to old. We just had a 56 yr old with absolutely zero experience in martial arts start our program and she is just tearing it up. I say go for it!

Is this guy for real?
Shorin-Ryu Karateka replied to JMP MT's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The 'set' is most likely a handful of burned DVD-Rs written on with a Sharpie pen... -
New here myself... Good to have you on the forum!

My biggest hobby (other than martial arts) is probably playing with my kids. I also enjoy reading and playing my guitar. I also enjoy working on my car and doing projects around the house when I have the free time.

Improve Punching and Kicking Power.
Shorin-Ryu Karateka replied to Toby's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree working a heavy bag is an excellent way to increase power. Another way is to work on your koshi and get your hips moving. By getting your whole body into the technique you can execute the same technique but increase your power dramatically. -
Chi Knockouts?
Shorin-Ryu Karateka replied to tufrthanu's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
If I struck you on the temple with force I wouldn't have to bother with any other pressure points... -
Congratulations on your promotion... Keep up the hard work!
