  1. I am looking for some drills to develope my hook kick(lead leg hook kick). I am doing a ton of repetitions currently and I know that in time it will get faster, but I need some new drills. I figure with the number of tae kwon do practitioners on this forum somebody is surely going to have some. Thanks.
  2. jiggy, I have the perfect tape for you to learn bo kata from, it is called mastering Isshinryu Bo by Master Ungi Uezu. It is available from Panther video products. I learned some great bo kata from it. Also you should check out all of panther videos on weapons, they are great.
  3. Since I am not really sure what your build is or where your strengths are, I will give this a shot and maybe I can help. If you are doing traditional forms I think you will do best with the weapon you feel most comfortable with. As for open format in weapons, I suggest that if you are a kicker(machine gun kicker) you would want to use kama or nunchaku, depending on how much gymnastic-type movements you want in your kata. If you have fast hands I suggest using a bo staff. If you are competing in a wushu dominated event, I suggest either straight or broad sword. I hope that we all remember that in open forms FLASHY gets the high scores.
  4. I always use martial arts sports league at http://www.maslinc.com they always have lists of tournaments. I suggest going to a tournament and getting your name on a mailing list, most have them.
  5. I have: 1 pair of octagonal sai, 1 pair of pressure treated tonfa, 1 boken, 1 suburi-to, 1 pair of nunchaku, 1 jo staff, and a wide variety of bo (a.k.a. too many to count). I only have the weapons I train with and can use in one way or another. All are needed for my own training. My wife owns 1 boken, 1 suburi-to, 1 katana, and the will to use them.
  6. I started teaching with another instructor when I was a brown belt and then was allowed to start teaching more independently once I reached Nidan, but I did not get to teach alone until I was a Sandan. In my school I will start training asst. instructors at shodan and I allow each of them to choose two brown belts as their assistants. They can test for an instructors certificate at the nidan level. I don't think anyone in the United States has any set level that they allow for people to start teaching(depending on system), but every school is different.
  7. Hi, I have just signed up and am loving the sight. I am a Yondan in Shorin ryu and a Nidan in Goju ryu. I also hold rank in Kodokan Judo and Hawaiian Kenpo Karate. I love sport karate, especially open weapons. My wife and I both train 6 days a week for competition.
