Categorizing Grappling/Striking Arts
dafabe replied to Taikudo-ka's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I go to a guy that teaches strikeing and grapling etc. basicly it is equal, it is about "Total Fighting" click this link, http://www.karateforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=2524&forum=2&0 -
there were once 3 students of martial arts, one of Karate, one of Gung Fu, and one of boxing. They decided to go to a new club that claims to teach "fighting skills" the were intreged as to what system this was. On arival they asked why he (the instructor) belived this style was the best, Senior Instructor explained, "every style has it's weeknesses, my style does not, because it is not a style and it is not mine." _________________ "perfection, is something we all get closer too with training, but you will never get there and untill you accept this your mind will be limited in what you can achive" - Dave [ This Message was edited by: dafabe on 2002-04-17 06:39 ]

I do not do any sort of ranking, at my club and yes if it was like that it would be a poor school, but that is my whole point, that there are so many places that are like this, and it is expecially worst for kids who start a new club and get this sort of atitude. Cheers, Dave

which martial art is the most focused on kicks?
dafabe replied to SrDrew's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
if you want to learn fancy kicks then Tae Kwon Do, if you want to learn to fight then take up mauy thai, there are lots of kicks in that to, but is is more about damage and power than what looks good. -
Thanx for your input people.

Sparing
dafabe replied to dafabe's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
sorry gum sheild to and a cup is optional. we dont alow groin shots or elbows/knees to the head, in training. I dont have a cup yet or gum sheild, but i will soon, yes it is sore as your side it a bad place to get hit and your thighs too. also kicks to the head are fair play. -

at the club I got to all we have are shorts and hand warpas dipped in glue and glass, just kidding, but seriously we wear shin gaurds and boxing gloves, no other pading. the shin gaurds are good as it alowes us to hit resonable hard with out hurting as much when you dont have tough shins this is a good thing. ) -
Pride (the feeling) This whole grading thing has become a thing of ego and and pride, people haveing to show one and other how good they are, despite what people may say it is basicly people showing off and the "respect" that is to shown to higher ranking students in some MA classes is taked to far. In my opinion respect should be shown to all students in class equally, someones ability in the MA class does not make them better or worse than anyone else, it is your whole life that makes you the person you are, not just how good you are in the dojo. I can understand that pride is something within us all and in some ways I would like a grading system in thai boxing so I could feel like I am moving up and feel better about myself, but at the end of the day I know when I am doing good and the only reason I would want a belt is to let evry one else know. I went back to my first Mauy thai class in years last week and all the students were great they were friendly and helpfull and trying to include me as much as posible, giving sparing tips etc. I am not saying all clubs have the wrong atitude but definatly alot do. _________________ "perfection, is something we all get closer too with training, but you will never get there and untill you accept this your mind will be limited in what you can achive" - Dave

What I am saying it Karate seems to have the idea that something you have learned will be best here, but you really need to learn more than just karate to become a good fighter.

does any one whon any web sites where I could get the meanings of thai letters. I thought it waould be quite funny if we were all jumping about with our thai shorts that say something like "kick here". and we never knew.

does anyone else feel they are "over carefull " about sparing and end up moveing to slow?

In boxing should you gaurd be in contact with your face, I was not sure as i feel it would still stun you if you did.
