Balrog, I would never have guessed.......... Don't hide your feelings, you must express yourself! -

Good luck with that. I would be interested, I'm already a member of another Federation. -Adam -

I think you are taking tourney's to seriously, it's for fun - enjoy it. But if there are no tourney's for you, compete against yourself. As for the girl, keep in touch with her. If it's ment to be it will work out, if not - that's the way it goes. Good luck! -
Christians & the rank of Master
MasterH replied to IcemanSK's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'll just say that I feel that the martial art "master" is a rank, I was elevated to that rank last July. I'm also a Lutheran, and go to church. People that I've known have had some issues with me as a "master" but not for religious reasons. Outside of church, when involved with the martial art of your choice, I think the title should be respected. I tell you what though, I don't know what I'm going to do the first time someone calls me "master" at the church........there can be only one master at that house, I'll be waiting for the lightning bolt. -
Master vs. Master?!?
MasterH replied to haidongNC's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
We have a masters division, 5th Degrees. It's usualy a good comp. I get lucky sometimes and win a few but I'm not known for my tourney record. We compete with only each other, 5th Degree's only, on forms, sparring and a breaking comp. The problem is the division is at the end of the tourney, so a good chunck of the croud has left, not knowing we still have some great fighting ahead. What I'm going to do when I host some tourney's is to move the masters division to the begining of the tourney (kind of like a demo) I think people would enjoy that. What do you all think? -Adam -
New school with diferent teachers

You can also try and get a hold of an existing martial arts club and make a deal for you to offer some classes. But if not start small at a YMCA or B&G club. And in time you will build your clientel. Good luck! -Adam -
Former ATA students and instructors
MasterH replied to MasterH's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I agree with that. However, that is not a consideration for promotion within ATA. You mean, not any more.......and you still need a certian number of active students but become a Master. -
That is a bit on the ironic side now that I think about it............

I remember him going to that camp. I have a number of friends who went as well. I wanted to go, but just couldn't afford it, the year before I toured Taiwan and Hong Kong with my Drum and Bugle Corps. In hindsight, I should have certified. Yea, GM Pierce is a good mentor. I only wish he would go into the business a bit more with me. That's why I'm asking about NAPMA and MAIA.

Yes! Bingo! And that's the only way you can look at this type of thing, or else it will just tick you off. And as for the black belt.....anyone can buy one of thoes nowdays. I've got 8 of them in my closet, granted I've earned them all and most don't fit me anymore, but they are a dime a dozen. OK $20.00 each........ -Adam

Steve, you are not wrong. I would only hope that parents would have the common sense to tell there kid this video is for fun. Mabe some would buy it as some sort of intro to what they might learn in a real dojo. I've seen the video in question, and the uniform. What I didn't like was they were also selling a re-breakable board. Now I'm sure it was a level 1 (white) board, but who is holding it for the kid and what teq are they to use with out the propper training? It is only natural for kids to want to check things out, parents as well. Can you immagine the lawsuit if something goes wrong? Toys are good, but the re-breakable board should not be in the toy isle.

Back to basics
MasterH replied to mean fighter's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I've been involved with TKD for quite a while now, my original BB is in a box. I think it was a size 3, I'm now a size 6. I have a total of 8 different black belts from 3 TKD orgs. I would like one generic black belt "Master Adam D. Huntley" on one side "Taekwondo" on ther other. -

I want to do the same thing but my instructor insists on the belt he gave me......kind of overdone.......but he wrapped it around my waist so, that's the way it is. -
Nice! Do you teach 6 days a week? Or spread out? 175 students, in a club, how many classes per day? Do you ever plan on opening a full time dojo? Do you mind if I PM you? -Adam

Taekwondo Essay Contest
MasterH replied to MasterH's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Funny you say that. I just heard the same (almost exact) statment from one of my students. I told her that "I'm sure it will be fair". But I don't doubt what you say. Check out the web sight......It seems to be a step (at least) in a positive direction. -Adam -
Well, there you go.

Are you sure Century bought NAPMA? Century seems to have a sweethart deal going on with MAIA. After Colasanti took over as president I know the Mag (Martial Arts Proffesional) stepped a bit away from the business and refocused on instructional issues. But I'm not a member, I just get the monthly publication (sales pitch). -Adam

Excellent post. I think you hit the nail squarely on the head with your descriptions of artisan, manager and consultant and how that applies to martial arts schools. Thanks! That was a great post. WW, My mentor is GM Jack Pierce. Very sucsessfull in the TKD world. I do/will pay him for his proffesional advice on running and maintaining a martial arts club. Under your last post would you concider him to be a paid consultant? -Adam

Thanks, interesting post. At this moment I'm only opening a part time club, and I think of myself as a white belt in business, ok maybe a yellow belt with allot to learn. In a few months I may be looking for that consultant. My wife would be the manager, and I would be the artisan.
