  1. what do sidekicks have to do with developing chi? lol
  2. I am not sure as to the specifics of these two styles. The essence of most Martial Art systems is the same, and that is to learn the techniques and principles in which to deliver yourself from those adverse situations you find yourself in. Good luck in your search!
  3. san shou as I know it is about taking what you know, and applying it in two man pre-arranged drills.
  4. If you have studied Karate or TKD, then Kung Fu is a good complimentary way. From there you could go into the Neijia aspects.
  5. The true Taijiquan, and not the New Age or the Geriatric version is one of the most effective Martial Art Systems there are.
  6. The ironic part is the concept of the metaphor regarding water started back long before Bruce ever entered into the picture. He helped spark a renewed interest in the arts with an emphasis on whatever you are doing, make it real, and make it work.
  7. Blind folded anything is good in those situations where you need to not learn to follow what you see. One could also where ear plugs. Or tie on hand to their waist Or place a heavy weight on one leg. Alternating these of course. They are aids in training technique. But the essence of learning how to do something or why it's done should not be replaced by modified applications of such.
  8. More information is needed in order for many us to give a good reply. You could always Google the term northern shaolin. Lots of information pops up.
  9. I do not follow the premise of being able to truly master anything in this world, since no person can in the sense be perfect, or be at their peak. Life is about living. That is it is dynamic, and always changing. Things change, but they remain the same, at the core. That's why people say if you seek to master anything, even though you may not truly get there, always work toward mastering the basics. Just some thoughts...
  10. I'll keep in my prayers. Take care, and stay strong!
  11. Never focus on just what you bring to the table. Sometimes a person might come along, and clean your plate. Then what are you left with? That is, the complimentary addition to Jay's statement would be: Also use your opponent's weaknesses or disadvantages back against them.
  12. One of the motto's of my school is: Do Whatever It Takes! Many people, outside of Martial Arts, and those who know little, are under the impression that the fighting techniques within the martial arts, are strictly about kicking, along with a heel palm strike, a backfist, or tradition deep stance with reverse punch. If not that, then submission holds, or japanese throws. They are wrong. Pleny of times one uses the bumper of a car to hit someone's head. Or perhaps a person is in the position to do things outside the norm. It is still Martial Arts.

  14. First thing you do when any weapon is involved is quickly assess the situation, and determine the best way out of. If you are trapped, and or are for certain, that they will use the weapon, then consider it nothing more than an extension of their body. Avoid getting hit with it. If it's a gun take cover. If you are close enough to take the gun, and or fight, and your life is at stake, then fight for it. If you have a stick, use it when the moment calls for it. A gun is effective at close or long range. There are many variables to consider when gun is involved. Too many for me to go into right now. Sticks and blades, well, those can be taken care of a little more easily. That's what I say for the moment...
  15. I ran away, alot. And hid alot. Avoided much. Only later, I still had to address what I was running away from and why. Do what you do know how to do. That is all you should expect from yourself. I am sure that most of us here would prefer that you walk away from this a better person than you already are. Be proud of yourself, for there is much to be proud of. Take care!
  16. His was a system. It just wasn't what the type of system that the traditional martial arts had evolved into. His was a structured way based upon the principles and methods of combative fighting. Even thought everyone back then, including him tried to avoid the term, in reality it was still a vehicle for the martial arts, and at the core of any traditional system, the same can be said.
  17. Jeet Kune Do was Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee was JKD. It is the core or essence of the Martial Artist that was evolving within him at the time. It is a principle based system of fighting. Korea, Japan, China, India, Africa, and South American, were each evolving their Martial Arts throughout the centuries. There were't always forms or katas. However, there were drills and practices, and cardiovascular activities that enveloped around the study of martial arts in any given region. Bruce Lee simply attempted to do what worked for him, and that was return to the way of training that was indeed more to the point than what traditional martial arts had evolved to, and for the most part is still doing today. Some people have time to wait. Other's feel that they do not. This is what makes it just as much art as a science. Take care...
  18. Mary reinforces my main idea, and that is to confront the situation head on. However, the cold reality of life is; we cannot always avoid fighting back. Violence is sometimes subtle in our lives, and sometimes it's right their in our face, waiting for a response. I lived with it every moment while in the pubhlc school system. It is real. And it must be faced, not necessarily turned away from. Violence is a result of something missing. It must be replaced with something positive. It must just be tolerated or accepted. Wanting to fight is one thing. If the young man is a bully, well that's another. If he wants to fight, you have options. If he is a bully, well some people say not to fight. I say, ask them if what they would tell their own children, is in some way or the other either physical or not, stand up for yourself. You cannot stand and block all day. Cause if they give in due to boredom or being tired, that doesn't insure that they will not return. Many times they pick up the pace, and if you are not good enough, this could backfire. Technically nothing I, or anyone else says, will guarantee something to happen in given manner in your situation. You must gather up all the facts, understand them, and address the situation with a clear conscious, and a big heart. But the odds are that if you simply give the appearance of being able to take control of the fight, then those odds shift to you favor. No one has the right make you change what you do. To make you have to appear to be afraid. To make you the lesser person to either yourself, or in the eyes of others. You maintain control of yourself. Never give control of your life to others. The human experience, that is all the things we experience throughout a lifetime, along with what they mean to us, are fragile. It's your human spirit that must be preserved during these times. Remain true to yourself. If you must fight, then only do that which will stop you from being hit, while reinforcing to the other person, that you can either take care of yourself, and or that you will stand up for yourself. I was either beaten physically or emotionally in school up through the age of 18, because I did what Mary said to do. Many times, much less. I was very passive, even though I knew instinctively what it took to survive. In my case the system failed me. My family were of no help. And in the end, in some ways, I failed myself. I took the easy way out, many times. Time spent growing up, like all things, passes. This will be something that you will tell your grandchildren about. Look to the future, and live in the present. Think big. Not small. These thoughts are what being passive, taking a beating, or trying to avoid life, thus taking the road less traveled got me. I share them today in hopes that others have a little more insight. Good luck!
  19. I have learned both WTF and ITF. The Tae Guek are simple in many ways, but that doesn't mean someone can't benefit from them. I am not sure about ATA forms, for I haven't seen any of them in action yet. Regardless of which way of TKD that a person learns the underlying philosophy should never change, else it is not TKD. TKD is supposed to be an even mixture of hands and feet. It's up to the individual to figure out their own weaknesses or limitations and work with them or around them. Some people are good with their legs, and other's good with their hands. Then there are those that effectively combine both. Just my spare thoughts...
  20. You take the parent or guardian or whomever aside, and politely tell them that this is your school, and that you have your reasons for doing what you do, just as they do when they tell their children to do such and such at home. That is, they too have their own set of guidelines while they run their household, and prefer little outside influence. The second situation, is to take him aside, and get his input as to why he is taking the class. When he finishes tell him that he is expected to participate as would any other team member or school companion. When he doesn't, he takes away from the experience that the other students have the right to learn. Just some thoughts...
  21. My first reply was to this: Experts and the Master's of old tradition, have said over and over that the Martial Arts are not based upon beginning conflict, rather finishing it. An aggresive person seizes the moment, but is just as willing to create an opportunity for attack as they would wait for one. Now after a situation begins, you can feint, fake, or taunt your opponent, and then bring them into a strike zone or simply closer in range in order to expand your options. The above is not agression, rather it is strategy. An aggressive spirit is something that is found within you. The level of confidence in your own fighting skill will aid in the determination of how aggressive you will be. On the other hand, an assertive person is willing to wait for the proper moment, and tends to not take the initiative even when they are presented with one. You take the philosophy of martial art, and the techniques from TSD, and with some work, I am sure you could be just as good a fighter as the next guy. The same goes for Wing Chun. But it takes work, and switching styles is not necessarily the answer. TSD and WCKF are traditional syles designed for a person taking time out the time to master a given way. What you seem to want is the military method of learning. Whereas it's comes in high doses, and is very specific and to the point. I would say take a year of boxing, and then a year of jujutsu, whereas you have the basics under your belt. Then just work on those over and over. Take them at the same time if you want. Or take MT, or any other progressive fighting art (method), such as JKD. If you have time to invest, choose Baquazhang or Taijiquan (the Martial kind, such as found at https://www.flowingcombat.com). The point I am making is to take something and stick with it. The style should confom to the person, not the person to the style. Those are my opinions. Other folks on here have good ones too. Take a little from each of us, and use what you can to do what works for you. Good luck!
  22. Most teach it as dance. But then others are able to truly extract the dynamics of the style, which is a living style, and not linear, nor circular.
  23. Of course when I say all movement, this mean begin to teach yourself to not only look at the eyes, but look at foot positioning, look at shoulders, at hands, watch them while they are in motion, does the mouth open, or do they pause or hesitate before throwing a given technique. Build upon each thing you look at. Until you can subconsciously react to what they are doing.
  24. Situations and strikes vary. But many things remain possible during combative moments.
