Hmm.........with the screen name KajukenboFighter, I would have thought that you are already training in that particular system. Mind me for asking, but do you or are you familiar with Kajukenbo? If you are or were, then I wouldn't expect such a question from one who has any sort of formal training. Training in the martial arts, no matter what style is about a way of life. Anyone who studies a martial art, whether formal or not, should be able to defend oneself depending upon how much that person trains. BTW if you would be so kind as to provide a little introduction of yourself that would be great, unless I missed it....

You are correct in that this type of crime has been going on for some time and it is just not being covered properly. That's all because of the media. The media can either help or hurt when it comes to reporting certain stories. You gotta remember that it is all about the media's rating. Sensationalized stories sell, others don't. It is the role of the parents to educate their children about the dangers of the world. Yes, I believe that it would be a great idea to enroll your kids into a martial arts school to learn self defense. But that is only part of a whole. One of the biggest thing to teach your kids is simple COMMON SENSE. Unfortunately given todays society, it is often times difficult for parents to be around their kids all the time to properly guide them. However, I say that they should prioritize their time by making their family first and everything else second. There could be nothing worse than the loss of your child or any loved one for that matter, especially if it could have been prevented. Just my 2cents.

I would say that you don't have to use a kiai with every technique. But if you ever take notice of when you work on technique, and at each strike you have an exhale of air, I liken that to a kiai because I'm tightening as I strike and tensing my body as well, which in turn allows me to absorb a punch of kick should/when/if I get countered on. Hope this was of some help.

Hi Shoto Ann: Glad to see that you are finally/officially on board!!! Hope your first day was loads of fun.......and it'll only get better

When I trained in Shotokan, we either went with paps or not. If we didn't use pads, then control was the name of the game. If we wore pads, then light contact was allowed. In terms of sparring a higher rank, I would expect better control from that person, especially if it's an instructor. Also as an instructor sparring with lower rank students, it is my job to insure their safety first of all and secondly teach them proper sparring techniques. I would generally leave open target areas for my students to recognize and attack appropriately. In and when I counter it is to let them know their guard is down or simply to keep them honest. As they progress then there is less and less target openings given and they have to work and getting me to expose a target area. Don't get discouraged about sparring, train hard and work on any or all the combinations you know, and in time it'll come together for you!!!

info on the art??
Pacificshore replied to drunken monk's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
There is the Fred Vallari school of Shaolin Kempo and then there's the Castro school of Shaolin Kenpo. At least these are the two that I know of. Vallari is primarily located on the East Coast and Castro's is on the West Coast. Now they may have lineage to either one, or simply have created there form of Shaolin Kempo. The best bet is to find out a little about the school, instructor and then do some research on the net to find out more info. Hope this was of some help. -
What do you like about your Karate style?
Pacificshore replied to Eye of the Tiger's topic in Karate
I've enjoyed about everything there is/was to learn in all my training. Right now since I am currently training in Kenpo/Kempo, I enjoy all the self defense techniques that my system offers. I also enjoy the katas and weapons katas. Many of our katas have a combination of hard and soft moves. They are all rather long, but that's what makes training fun plus many of the moves comprise that of our self defense tecniques. -
I was never really into watching baseball except during the world series. These guys are overpaid and a bunch of premadonnas if they don't get what they want. I mean really how much money do you you need to never have to do anything useful in life . But it's not just the players, the owners have dug themselves their own graves.....greedy freaks

I can train either way, but I've learned as I get older that the thought of bustin' a toe(s) or even spraining one isn't a whole lot of fun. Plus all it'll do is take away from your training. With shoes you obviously save your toes and the bottoms of your feet(sometimes). I've developed blisters the first time I actually wore shoes for training. Took some getting use to just like anything else.

Beware of the "Dojo Bunny"
Pacificshore replied to KickChick's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Hmm.....Dojo bunny........here's a story from my friend who use to be a TKD instructor. One of his assistant instructor received a letter one day from a female student, adult of course. In the letter she writes how about how the assistant inst. wants her by the way he looks at her and gives her the "goo goo" eyes. Well that basically freaks out the asst. inst. and he asks my friend for advice in handling the situation. Needless to say, the asst. inst. has a talk with the female student to tell her that she is mistaken, and that was the furthest thing from his mind. That didn't help any because she went off calling him a bad inst./man and so on. Now do you think she fits the description of a Dojo bunny, or is simply whacked?! When I initially heard the story, the first thought I had was.......fatal attraction -
Not a bad site at all

ICE, You can do an internet search on Hwarang do and you should come across the official website. The Grandmaster of the system is Joo Bang Lee, and they are based out of California. It is an all encompassing art from what I've read and seen via programs on various martial arts systems. There has also been articles in the recent past written about the art. Look at the Blackbelt magazine website for some of the articles they have published. Hope this helps.

Hi KC, Sounds like your halfway there on your breaks!! As far as a kicking speed break, I would tend to think that you'd want to attempt to do it with your lead leg as that is where you have more speed vs. power with the rear leg. How about trying to perform the break using a scooting round kick off of the lead leg? I know your in TKD, but no need to get too crazy on your break .......or is there? Although you could perform a speed break from a spinning technique, there still that factor of power being generated by spin. Anyway, just my thought on the subject.

This kinda goes hand-in-hand with the last topic about what MA stars you'd like to see, well..................if any of you ever get to Sunny California in November, the 19th to be exact, then try to hit the Dragonfest. You will be sure to see lots of MA stars come out as a way to give back to the community as a whole and to benefit the pediatrics aids foundation.

I personally like the Discipline shoes. I've worn Otomix and didn't care for them. The thing about the Discipline shoes are that they run small, so if you normally wear a size 10 then either go half or a full size up depending on how you like your shoes to fit. They come in the low top or high top. Shop around too if you can, sometimes you can find them on sale for a good price.
