Do it yourself weapon making: Bo/jo/hanbo & bokken?
kitsune_no_tama replied to Goldtooth's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
i had a rake that had the head broken off of it, and i sanded down the broken edge. its fine as a jo staff now. -
idk... maybe if your against the wall and you can get a push from it? your wouldnt need to make a run then.

I just started martial arts
kitsune_no_tama replied to samoht's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
completely agreed. your sensei shouldnt be angry because you hit him. that just shows him that your improving and you should be praised for the accomplishment. i myself have won one of my sparring matches against him, and he gave me one of my belts free instead of having to pay for one at testing -
"put your every day living into karatedo and find the ideal state of existance"- iska master camp 2005 theme the way that i find it, karate is compatible to just about everything because of the benefits reaped from practicing it. its fine to be obsessed, as long as it doesnt alter other aspects of your life for the worse, or you start a cult over it (chung moo).

what about the electrical field that passes over the skin? can qi have something to do with that? the electrical field that travels over the skin can make the difference between strength and weakness. theres some kind of study going on that they put some kind of enzyme and water into a patch and affix to the skin so it can put the electrical field into harmony. its supposed to eliminate fatigue, and generate more muscle activity and effectivity.

i train for 2 hours 4 days a week inside the dojo and about 3 hours 3 days a week outside.

i'd have to dissagree with that. the reason you might see only girls winning every time is because the boys are uncomfortable about hitting the opposite sex. in teen matches, yes it is more common for the girls to win than the boys because of those awkward hormone problems/ problems with confidence. if a boy can convince himself that the girl is aware of the risk involved with sparring, he can overcome that problem. as for me, i have only lost one match and that was to someone twice me size . maybe im just too competitive, i dont know. maybe its just a matter of skill, but this can alter their performance. a boy must be karate minded in all aspects of his mind during competition to truly remove the handicap. theres my 2 cents.

...you choose a date with kenneth funakoshi rather than salma hayek (lol) ...you burn your weed as incense ...you try to use 3 nunchaku at once ... you cry excessively at the end of crouching tiger hidden dragon (applies to me ) ...you outline the innacuracies of dragonball z for your art class ...you use this emoticon ... when you buy "hai-karate" aftershave just to get the self defense leaflet the commercials said was included. ...you have more weaponry than the boxer rebels

ne1 here study stav martial arts?
kitsune_no_tama replied to kitsune_no_tama's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
from what i hear its not all that great, but it is better than some things out there. its better than chung moo doe i know that lol. they use way to many unnecessary movements and high kicks. and even above that they are more cult active than they are martial arts. they worship their founder, John C. "Iron" kim. some junk about jumping off 11 and 8 story buildings and junk and being wanted for bruce lee replacement. i wouldnt say that stav is really a cult martial art because its based on old religion that is still quite common. the weapons in stav i would have to say are rather heavy to handle dually. its not too shabby but its not that great either. -
i was wondering if there was anyone here that wasnt the only one in their family that studied martial arts. as for me, my father studied shimukan, my uncle on my fathers side studied tang soo doo, and my uncle on my mothers side holds a 3rd degree in wado ryu. how about you guys?

lol i guess i might be mistaken to the masses. i am familiar with uska shotokan. it might be different for a jka practitioner, but to us uska we have a different approach to our sparring. we dont even try to do kicks to the groin though (we arent REALLY going to hurt anyone in the dojo are we?). sweeps are also discouraged because we do not practice on a soft floor. we learn all the techniques, but because of their effectiveness on a real assailant without the need for as much contact, we are not specifically told to use them in our sparring. because we need special equipment, like floor padding (we have almost half a rooms worth of puzzle piece padding) to practice these techniques, in our general sparring it catches the opponent off guard because they dont expect the use of it. i hope that cleared some things up.

ne1 here study stav martial arts?
kitsune_no_tama replied to kitsune_no_tama's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
its not really kung fu at all. it is alot like kung fu as it runs very circular and is a very flowing art. when stav originated the norse didnt even have ties with china. im not saying that it is actually kung fu, but a spectator not familiar with either type of martial art would not be able to distinguish them. if someone had not heard of stav, they would probably think that stav was a kind of kung fu also -
i completely agree. i dont care what my belt COLOR is, because it only represents an acknowledgement of being exposed to the technique and skill. i respect the belt because it is the path of my life. i understand that all things are sufficient to all other things in a chain (small or large, no matter it just does lol.) so that also means a reverence for the system and its icons. just because i have a debate going on here doesnt mean its the only aspect of my spirituality and life. it merely helps represent my conviction

Your greatest achievement in the martial arts?
kitsune_no_tama replied to 1kickKO's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i'd have to say my greatest achievement was one of my sparring matches. i am 3rd kyu and i was going up against this 2nd kyu guy. we developed a nice friendly rivalry. in one of the matches, i pulled a jackie chan on him. i dodged all hits, no blocking. struck fast and consistently, getting points in one hit, never being blocked. i baseball slid between his legs to avoid going out of the ring and while standing up backfisted him out of the ring. the funny thing is that earlier that day he sparred my sensei and won . my sensei wouldnt spar me that day. he said that he hurt his ankle sparring david (the other guy) but we all know why . my greatest achievement was this instance of being so much "in the zone" -
shotokan officially at the moment but im learning the other 3 major styles from members from my school martial arts club. i used to do songahm tkd

your first dojo beating
kitsune_no_tama replied to Son Goku the monkeyking's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i visited a tkd classroom one day and they put me up against their top students (my age, but all 2nd and 3rd degree black belts). i won in 3 out of 5 matches, but in every single one of them i was kicked in the face . for black belts they sure have poor control.i overestimated their control and i got my just desserts . i lost the last match cause my nose and forehead started bleeding. they made me forfeit for inability to continue -
yes i would.

so would that be a sign that my dojo is learning more towards traditional okinawan karate? he didnt even know the japanese name of the kata. either he trained for however many years he needed to straight and never found out common names of today, or he wants to point out that we are traditional school.

yellow in songahm tae kwon do and 3rd kyu blue belt in shotokan
-
in songahm tae kwon do, they wanted the belt system to mean something more than a belt system. it has to do with the maturing of a tree and the rising and setting of the sun on new days or something. some styles want their belt system to have a spiritual significance

i wouldnt really say a crutch. its the venue of my avoidance of a destructive path. i seek knowledge, but i understand that the knowledge i seek cannot be reached within my life time, or any number of people's life times for that matter. its not that i feel mentally insecure without my belt, its that i respect them image of the belt. its like the american flag. you could understand the pledge of allegiance to the flag, but it would be wierd to pledge allegiance to a belt, right? . i treat my belt as i do out of respect for the creators of the arts, the people who have trained before me, and myself. it may seem pointless to you, but if you truly hold to your point, why do people celebrate a birthday? its only a ritual to acknowledge the day of someones birth and respect to the path of their life. the martial arts, i have found are no different. it represents the paths of the lives of millions.
