there may or may not be a sai kata, but that shouldn't stop you practising basic kata with the sai. it could add a whole new dimension to your learning
-
i think it needs to be said, there is a difference between teaching higher grades and beginners. the higher grades are used to the way the school does the warm ups, and the way it is organised, whereas the beginers have so much to learn (right, now this is a press up....) which will slow it down. dont worry about it, this is natural and many people are nervous (i still am nervous) about leading a big group, and like usatkdwtf said, the only way to learn is to put yourself up at the front and confront your fear. remember if your instructor asks you to do it, then it shows he believes in you
-
yep it depends on where you train, ask your instructor, he will tell you what you need
-
you will just have to train harder. talk to your teacher and ask for any advice on useing the correct technique to avoid punches. i am not saying you will be invincible, and never be hit again, just less often.
-
umm, i thought that real training began when you were white belt, and that black belt represents an advanced student, ie someone who is good technically but has more to learn.. From white to black you are given the tools to train. nothing more. so what else is there...?

what exactly do you meen by line work? if you are talking about lining up in rows and going back and forth across the dojo then yes we do that, and from what i thought that was fairly common?
-
mmmm.... fair enough, as i cant stand the bloodhoundgang, then i must be gay....

i think you would see an improvement if you did it more regularly. ie doing the chest and arms on wednesday and saturday and then the lower body on monday and friday and also go for a run more often keep the 5 mile run and add in 2 smaller runs of 2/3 miles during the week

fot starters you need to find another website as this is a Martial Arts site. but a few pointers to keep you going. 1 you have to put the work in, those adverts promising you 'rock hard abs with 5 mins a day' are rubbish 2 to build muscle, you need to have a rest day after a hard workout, this is so the body rebuilds itself stronger. ie 3/4 times a week. 3 i would also recomend aerobic exersise, in the form of running or biking or swimming, 30-40 mins a time 3 or 4 times a week. remeber the rest days so your body can repair itself. this will help you to loose any excess weight which is covering your abs. 4 as for diet, sorry i am just as confused all i can suggest for now, is balance, eat a bit of everything, and layoff the fizzy drinks, sweets, and macdonalds (etc)

milk will not help you loose weight, but it is good for you as it is a very good source of calcium actually thinking about, 3 servings is alot, i have milk with cereal at breakfast, and sometimes a glass in the evening..

A perfect martial art?
cheeks replied to pondera's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
good point, there is no point in trying to find the perfect art if the teacher is rubbish, and the student is lazy and as for a perfect art, we all have different ideas of 'perfect' and of what that means to us. for example i prefer to use my hands when fighting, but others may prefer kicking or grappling. and even deeper, i hate the back kick, but love the spinning kick and everyone else will have different preferences which make us unique to each other. -
their new album is absolutely phenomenal, i have permanently got it on...its a bit vulgar in places, but its not that bad surely? (just remembered the first line of 'cigaro') yes it is vulgar, without a doubt and i cant train with it, as i keep stoping to mosh and airguitar to it....
-
lol, same here i say it to my brother and he very quickly backs away... actually considering that all but one of my friends are in Martial Arts, this is not really an issue (and that other friend is a 400m runner and understands the need for dedicated solitary training)
-
i use the spear hand regularly, along with palm strikes, and wrist strikes
-
no worries, you are not to young at all...
-
very true, when you get down to it, a punch is a punch, a kick is a kick no matter which style you do.
-
really? what type of kung fu do you do? and yes, i agree with what you said, black belt and beyond is perfecting technique, and making the style your own. i would advise exploring other MAs to help on this journey.....
-
i am fully aware of the power generated in a side kick but i cant see the point of doing it in a horse stance, because of what i do in Kung Fu, i automatically use a short quick stance rather than the overly rigid horse stance. but thanks for your comments anyway and i will try to learn it, i will just never use it.
-
the most deadliest weapon ever...is the one you can actually use, like clouddragon said, it is no point in having an expensive weapon like a gun, knive, or sword, if you cant use it.....
-
What are you going to do to correct this and when? to be honest i dont think i will bother, i think it is a daft technique, and i do not see the point of wasting my time training a technique that i will not use.

Why did this change when i started
cheeks replied to Samurai Shotokan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
its just practice, getting used to how sparring works and getting more confidence in your techniques -
its strange, my fave types of music is heavy metal, and metalcore (like killswitch engage, S.O.A.D) when i am training i only ever listen to trance, euphoria music. and i cant stand that normally, its just a case of whats best for you....
-
that sounds a little bit strange.... and i cant see how that would work and Goju_boi why do you want to be hit? work on your defence and you will be hit less often..... just a thought
-
that 'hybrid' style is the same that i do in Kung Fu. on a slight tangent, i hate yokogeri kekomi, i feel really uncomfortable kicking from the horse stance, it feels slow and awkward, and i cant get any power. i much prefer the sotogeri (side kick) as it is much faster, and i use the momentum to drive through the opponant
