if two people are sparring and both of them are not blitzing then one thing that we do to get them to start moving, is to start them on the line, say go, and whoever hasnt hit the other in say 2 seconds, then they have to do pushups after a while u start blitzing, or uve done a lot of pushups

fending of an animal

wow, thanks for the information ive always had a fear of dogs, and more so since i started martial arts training actually. Because i know how a human works, and how to defend against one, but i have no idea about a dog... but now i do, thanks so much maybe now i wont be so scared of them next thing is to learn for a cat i guess...im not as scared of em, but still not at all comfortable. anyways thanks again -
for a long time i had the nickname of "Kata Queen" pretty much cuz i pick up new katas very quickly, and i love to learn them i have also been called "Hidden Dragon", from crouching tiger hidden dragon i dont look like much (ie im very petite), so i surprised the class when practicing advanced kicks, because by looking at me you would never think i was good at anything like that atm i dont have a nickname

my brother unintentionally used an umbrella as a weapon on me when we were little was a compact one, and he pressed the button when it was near my face, end shot out and punched me in the face

oh, um nah didnt get it either then, if it doesnt count that i couldnt make an actual circle more of a ragidy weird thingy that jumps a bit when i do the six although interestingly enough, sometimes rather then my foot trying to change directions, my six will change directions...ie end up as a new uninvented number...-6 maybe?

welcome I dont usually pay that much attention to introductions but as i currently live in vegas, this caught my attention. I dont practice shorin ryu, but i am very involved as an instructor in a dojo in vegas. If shorin ryu is what you want to continue, perhaps i can be of help in finding a suitable dojo for you.

in my first school u didnt have to get a gi and obi till u tested for your first rank i got mine before my first test, but by the time i did i had seen everyone take off and put on their belts every class for around two months. Thus it was easy for me to tie it my first time. now i tie my belt where u start with hte middle on ur belly button, but when it gets to the back i adjust it so that there is no cross i teach starting in the middle too, but i dont teach them to adjust it, so all the kids at the school learn to tie it with a cross in the back the adults are not split up by rank, and do not spend any time during class learning how to tie the belts for the new student. I just catch em before they go into their class, and fix it. ive fixed soooo many belts over the years, that i see right away if they are tied wrong, and automatically go and fix em.

i pay nothing, i instruct, if anything i loose money because i work less hrs in my paying job, and also use my computer at home to print papers so i frequently have to replace the ink as far as what the going rate is at the school though its 85$/month for 3 classes a week we are the cheapest in the city as i know, and we barely make enough to keep the doors open it really depends on waht area u live in, being in a large city, the cost to keep a school open is pretty high

Lead leg fighting
Rateh replied to Belasko's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
OK, so what's a "Crocodile Kick" ? It is a kicking technique in which the kicking leg is thrown 45 degrees upwards above the opponents head, then sharply thrown downward. The downward motion is facilitated by pivoting 180 degrees on the supporting foot. This kick can be seen to be utilised by Kyokushin practitioners, and Muay Thai stylists. Some Taekwondo students throw a kick like this, but to my knowledge, it is taught as a tactic rather then a coined technique. I have seen this kick performed numerous times, but first saw the name for this kick written in a book called Advanced Kickboxing written by Pat O' Keefe. I still wonder if this is the same person who started this site. sounds like waht we call a "drop down roundhouse kick" looks like a roundhouse kick to the head then at the last moment ur leg so its going straight down, still striking with the same part of ur foot am i correct that these are the same kicks? i have never heard of another style/school doing these, though im not exactly an expert on what other styles and schools do we dont do them much at all, but we do know them -
when i started, i was 12 almost 13 we were allowed to stay an hr after class for extra training if we wanted one time the assistant instructor spent the whole hr trying to train me to kiah louder than a whisper there is this kid that i teach, he just turned three he has the cutest kiah ever sounds like "k-eye-ah" when u ask him to kiah, he just yells that out, with a big scowl on his face as part of it its funny cuz he still cant quite kiah and do a technique at the same time, too much for him i guess so he will punch, then yell "k-eye-ah" then punch, then yell, etc

large or small number of techniques?
Rateh replied to taiji fajin's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
ive actually been considering this for the past while, though not as clearly stated as you have i think that at the early stages, one should focus on a few techniques as one becomes more advanced, they should gain experiance in many different techniques, but still keep their core group this way they have some that they know very well but they also get a greater idea of what options are avalable, as well as a greater understanding of how to use the techniques that they use most often -
ok...what about a dream about being attacked by a baby? also i have had dreams of being attacked by my father, and a number of ones being attacked by a cat... now, im afraid of cats, i love kids, and my father has never hit me or threatend to or anything

i never heard of it, but it sounds well...like a stupid thing to do i wouldnt be at all surprised if they started selling "preworn" black belts, like they do with jeans that look like they have been worn for a while

im starting up a class on friday to teach students how to assist in classes the class will run months...i dont know how many, but at least 5 id say im charging 20 dollars, total, for the whole thing this includes a binder, and all papers i give them a parent apparently complained to the head sensei (he told me ofc) about the price of 20 dollars it works out to less than a dollar per class, if u assume the binder and papers are a free gift, plus all of my time at home so...what does this mean? my time isnt even worth a dollar?! /me is very annoyed :/ anyways...this is not belt testing fee, but it still is an example of people not being willing to pay basic fees

i can no longer do much in the way of training, as i have some sorta medical breathing issue (currently they think its my heart, but i do not have insurance so cannot afford the testings) anyways... so i teach 2 hrs on monday, 1hr on tuesday, 1hr 15 mins on wed, 1.5hrs on thursday, and 45 mins on saturday i spend a lot of hrs reasearching martial arts history, liniage, etc at home online, i would like to be able to go to a bookstore and get some good books on teh subject to study, but i cannot afford that, i have considered looking in the library, but i would much rather own the books i regularly feel disapointed with my inability to train much, though ive resolved to wait until i know what is wrong, as i do not want to kill myself, and before i stopped, it was just getting so bad that id spend more time trying to catch my breath during class than anything else ok im sure u all needed to know that... but as far as non actual practice/training...i guess i do about... 8hrs when i can train again, which i really hope i can...i want to train/learn more in... sparring, point and continuous takedowns akido shotokan judo jujitsu bo staff katana maybe more that i cant think of atm, boy i have soooooo much i wanna learn and practice

when people hear that i do MA (which isnt that uncommon, since i work in a resturant and have to schedule off every weekday evening to teach) they always ask at least two of these questions 1.how long have u been training? 2. what rank are you?/are you a black belt? 3.can u beat me up?/could u take me? it was really hard when they would ask me how longand i would be like, almost 7 years, and then they would ask if i was a black belt, and id be like no its not uncommon for them to assume that u are therefor not any good, because of others getting theres in 2 years or so oh, n now i dont have that problem
-
yeah that would really make u look like the defendant itd be really hard to convince anyone that she attacked u also, u would have to be really careful if u put her in a lock, because that too could be construed as u being the one attacking btw, i would treat her just as any other attacker, except that i wouldnt feel as in danger (remember im female). id feel much more threatend if a guy attacked me, especially since they would most likely have different reasons then the girl...in the girls case i think it would be a schoolyard type fight, or some girl just freaking out, or trying to steal something from me maybe if it was a guy it could be much worse, hence also i would tend to hit him a lot harder, go straight for more painful things, might sound harsh...but i dont wanna take a good solid punch from a big guy
-
what about "death pushups"? basically where u stand up, fall straight down, back straight etc, catch urself in hte bottom of a pushup position, and hten push up...ie u catch urself with ur hands with ur body just off the ground and combinations of that, where u do a clap pushup right after etc... i always thought those were a bad idea, but soem people like them also, what about egyptian style, and triangle/diamond? then ofc there is superman and clap ones anyone know if these are bad? i think at least a couple would be

united studios of self defense (USSD)

i went to a ussd school for about 6 months or so... long story but i was a brown belt who should have tested for black but wasnt for political reasons (told to me by other black belts, as well as all the parents and studetns telling me i should be tested) anyways, so i finally got fed up with the promise of testing only to not have it fullfilled, and went to find another school i went to a ussd school, as i said, i was somewhat happy with it, at first he decided after my first private lesson to put me at blue belt rank, but let me keep my belt till my next test about two or so months after i started, i tested for blue green or blue brown, whatever it is... anyways, i was rushed so faster memorizing alllllllllll that stuff up to bluegreen/brown, that i couldnt remember hardly any of it on the test because im short, and they lined us up by rank AND hight, i was in the back, with the like 14 year old boys, they had to remind me of a few things, and i faked my way through a lot not a single person noticed i was very unhappy with this, but it was my instructors decision to rank me up, and i had done my absolute best to memorize the material when i switched schools, i had been teaching for about two years (yes i know under black belt teacher, but lets not get into that discussion) as an experianced teacher, i was unsatisfied with his instruction i spoke with him about it, he asked waht i would change, and i gave him a few pointers, he agreed with all of them, and implimented one on the next class...sad to tell ur own instructor how to teach better :/ ok, then there was the fact that i way outclassed other students in many things, and it was very obvious, things that they were working hard on, was like doing a front kick to me, sorry to say but it gets kinda borring as well, they tried to change my stances, which i didnt like, ofc it was a different style, so i did my best i asked to be able to help out in the kids class, and i was told no, even though he knew about my instructing background i was told that until i went to the instructors college that i would not be able to help out with any classes or teaching i heard about how the instructors college worked, and it sounded brilliant, so i got an appointment with the head guy in the area about it my instructor wouldnt tell me how much it was exactly, so i found out when i was there it is 12,000 dollars in my area on the one hand, i would get a lot of training, on the other, i didnt know at all before hand what exactly i would be buying, as well as i already had a lot of experiance in instructing, whereas the others would not have when i left, i was charged because i broke the contract or hwatever... anyways, i finally went back to my old school, which about a month later was bought by one of the owners students, went back to teaching, regained what i had lost (even though i was practicing a lot, i lost some of my techniques and power etc), and was tested up to black about 6 months later, once the school was more settled.... ok that was a lot of information, but it is my brief experiance with ussd high price per month bad testing poor instruction expencive school to learn teaching fee's for breaking ur contract lower level of skill also, we have students who have come to us from ussd, i was informed by a parent (so this is heresay) parents cannot stay and watch her son(who was brand new) was in a class of many many students who were up to brown(while this may work in some cases, it did not here) cannot know the instructors first names so...i dont like ussd much, though some schools are good, or so i hear from my instructor, and they do produce some good students sorry for the long post, but i thought it was best to explain how i came to this opinion -
Former ATA students and instructors
Rateh replied to MasterH's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
is there a point where u have to be an instructor to get a certain degree? do u have to own a school? just curious, since u said u didnt have the number of students for 5th degree -
i agree, if he is doing it to u, he is most likely doing it to someone(or more) else i also agree that u should talk to ur pasture/priest/whoever is in charge as well as ur parents ok so i didnt say much besides agreeing...but hey its better to hear something from two ppl than one right?

we must have very exceptional children then O.o there is only one "child black belt" though, she is 14 and is a junior black belt she doesnt have a false sence of her own skills but i know she could defend herself quite well, actually she somewhere around my hight, and weighs more then me, and has a stronger upper body then me oh n im 21 n female
-
we dont wash our belts, and we dont PUT them on the floor however, especially during sparring, kids belts fall off they just do, during every sparring class at least one kid looses their belt, and sometimes during other classes a belt will just come off, when running laps or something so ofc it then falls on the floor, were not going to stop a sparring match for them to deal with it, someone just runs in and grabs it and they keep going when the instructor remembers, he often goes around to every child before sparring begins, and tugs all their belts so they wont fall off

How long to earn a Black Belt
Rateh replied to Shogun of Harlem's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
seems to show prejudice to women, handicapped and elderly, giving belts based on being tough, vibrant and young, as well as skilled. Not sure i entirely agree with this. in fact, i know i don't. agreed ive said it before, but im a very small female im afraid with this sort of promotion method, i wouldnt get very far not that i wouldnt know what i was doing... but against bigger and stronger opponents, it would be more of a case of escaping being tapped out, then being able to tap them out also a strong guy would be able to tap out weaker people just above his rank, without having as good of technique and come to think of it...since stronger people would be able to be promoted easier then the weaker/smaller...then the higher ranks would be made of the stronger people, thus making it even more difficult for one such as myself to make it anywhere in the ranking system
