  1. Hello. I might be moving to Myrtle Beach soon. Are there any good schools around? I'm looking for bjj, catch wrestling, greco, or I would look into trying kajukenbo, or kenpo, or kyokushin, or something. Thanks.
  2. where can I compete at around SC within the next few months? is there a good online directory for upcoming events?
  3. What's cauliflower ear? Should everybody in grappling wear head gear?
  4. Spirit At Choice: Ever heard of the Bao Way? I believe thats what its called. Sensei Bao introduced it to us at a Cuong Nhu meeting in Chatanooga: its a series of videos that deals with such subjects. They seemed to be very well-made, with maybe some influence from ju-jitsu.
  5. I've never been insured before. I don't really know where to start.
  6. I appreciate the responses. Well, the pain lasted about a week. I didn't miss much of my training, just a little, and now I feel back to normal almost. Thank God. I would have went to a doctor, but I don't have any insurance. That might be something to look into.
  7. What would a typical class consist of? A lot of sparring or more forms? What kind of conditioning would be required?
  8. Well dang, that decides that for me, haha. Thanks for the info.
  9. Anybody know about chinese boxing? What is their training like compared to western boxing, their techniques, etc? What should I expect to gain from that if I join? I want to become better with my hands, but realistically, I don't think I have time to train in a regular boxing school.
  10. What's your body type first. BJJ=very competitive. And others I'm sure.
  11. Past failures and a desire to better myself in every aspect of my life; I want to be well-rounded.
  12. Hehe, that thought has crossed my mind before: only because I think I know what I personally need to work on(what I consider to be the most important MA aspects). But: I can't teach those things because I haven't studied them. Maybe one day if I train diligently in say, BJJ, boxing, Muay Thai, and wrestling I'll create my own style. But I know that's not going to happen.
  13. Its mostly constant, seems to occur when I breathe in. More sharp than dull.
  14. Haha, the language thing. An X-block is by crossing your arms, so they form an X. A lower X-block is kinda like 2 lower blocks at the same time. An upper X-block is kinda like 2 upper blocks at the same time. Not completely, but kinda. A thrust kick pushes. You load, then thrust with follow-through. A snap kick is different, like a roundhouse. A thrust kick makes all the force of contact go along your leg. And a sucker punch is just a term to describe a cheap-shot. Like a late hit.
  15. Well I've got a question. I have got some pain in my left chest. I recently got real sick, threw up a lot, had a lot of internal pain; that was a few days ago. While I was sick my muscles were real sore all over; don't remember that ever happening before. Anyway, I'm young, eat healthy enough, exercise regularly- what's going on? Maybe its no big deal.
  16. Yeah, you can train for 2 nights a week in most styles. I haven't found martial arts to be anything but beneficiary to weightlifting. As has been said already, most martial arts workouts are about stamina and speed, not muscle building. Depending on how rigorous the class is, you may even feel like working out afterwards. Sometimes.
  17. You might rethink that. It's not a perfect depiction, sure, but "nothing to contribute"?
  18. What "full gear"? We used a mouthpiece and cup, and got into a few good scraps while sparring. The punches are supposed to be pulled, but some idiots get out of hand and you have to return the favor. When I wanted to train in other dojos I never asked anybody- I just did it. One of the rules of ethics is to respect every other form of Martial Arts.
  19. Good that you're excited. This could improve several areas of your life. As far as what style..... You mentioned getting into shape and having fun to stay motivated: my personal opinion, bjj, judo, other grappling aren't very fun. Any traditional karate would have some fun workouts. Maybe not all practical, but fun. Based on my experience(which isn't too much) standup ma's will get you in better shape overall than grappling. Especially cardio. I wouldn't reccomend boxing or muay thai to someone out of shape though, at least from what I hear. That's why I suggest shotokan karate(other karate styles might be just as good, don't know). TKD might be good for you too.
  20. I agree about the grappling. You are probably already a better striker than an untrained person because of the reach advantage. Of course learning how to utilize that would be great too.
  21. Magic? That's interesting, don't hear that every day. Game programming: sounds cool too. You sound like me. Lots of interests. Be happy, you'll never get bored!
  22. hmmm. That's interesting. I'll look into it some more.
