  1. well the grouping was between the 3 lower levels of kyu ( i think im not even a kyu, becuase i havent done any tests yet) and had 14 people aged from 15 to 24. kata was first and i didnt do as good as i thought (probably nervousness) but then in 1 step sparring i got 3rd place, and then in team kata i actually captained my heian shodon (hahaha) to 2nd palce (there was only 4 teams hehe) oh well.. i got a lot of feeback, and what surprised me was that most of it was on my front stance, and not back stance, which i though my front stnce was solid so basically it was great because this helped me figure out all the impovings i need to work on
  2. wow......great competition. had a lot of fun and saw some great bb competition! its odd that i personally had a better kumite (1 step) than my kata comp. i thought my kata was far better than my kumite..mayeb thats because i put a lot of pressure and was quite nervous for just the kata!...hmm.. oh..lots to improve opon, which i will start tomorrow!
  3. have you looked around Salem or Corvallis?
  4. yea..theres sites on the internet with good info, but remember..your kindeys are your friends so dont take too much drink lots of water, as one should always.
  5. ok, so i know i didnt get into karate for competion and wining anything, but this is a great test to see what i have accomplished these first 6 weeks! and more importantly, what i need to work on!...its one step sparring for my low low level and kata comps to (i of course am doing heian shodon) my sensei told me to try and do everything, so its going to be a very humble expeiernce as well! its going to be this sat morning so wish me luck!! its all i have been thinking about for a week! and hey, any advice?...hehe ...?
  6. yea...its just way more convienient to workout in the mornings of karate practise..i usually do just a few muscles groups and one thin is for sure, im not doing legs on MWF there will be about 8 hours between weights and the training. on tues thurs sat ill be spacing out over the days, going over kata and basics, running and working out as well.
  7. hey thanks all..thanks V..yea i understand that not everyone focuses perfectly...but good adivice, i will use it today! i personally do a little run right before pratise to be quite warmed up and already a little tired...i think ill take that time to address the minute everyday problems, then ask myslef what my goals are, then say whats more important while i open the dojo door.
  8. well its definatly a release for me too, even an escape from it all....thats why im keen on trying to keep all that out in the dojo... but its harder than i thought....i think i think way too much..haha think'...
  9. so right off the bat you were able to have perfect concentration in the dojo? wow..you must have a nice life
  10. i dont think we can use comparisons of world classsprinters and runners against the untrained runner/sprinter.....well thats not the same because in running there are rules..heck i could just run across the track and win every time! but in streetfighting there are no rules, so technicaly, i belive anything could happen. quoting sevenstar: "The sun even shines on a dog's behind some days..." anonymousone- kudos, i really hope to aquire your amount of confidence in your art through many many years of hard work and training. so that even if the sun shines on the dogs behind, it wont matter in my eyes... i dont think one can ever have too much confidence when one has the years of trained dicsipline of their art with it!.. i belive that will yield truthfulness, and not arrogance.. i hope i get there....
  11. Wondering how everyone keeps all their distractions and thoughts out? ..as a beginner (2 months..) i definatly need to work on keeping focus, and i do have incredible great days at the dojo..but also off days..mostly due to losing my focus and thinking about that world outside the dojo. we meditate for a minute or so before and after class...but i feel that isnt enough. What are all you guys ways to bring that focus in...and keep it there! thanks
  12. anyone else split thier MA training on the same day?
  13. ok.... so how about practising the basics and my kata in those mornings and then going to MA training that same day?? my training time is 1 hour (actual training, exculding the stretching)
  14. ahh..makes sense.. thanks
  15. my speed varies. but what matters in most ab workouts in not to 'pooch' your abs out when you crunch in..but pull, well squeeze them in (dont breath in though)..its a lot harder and better this way..and it also tones better too.
  16. good advice all... so...and the concensus is to not work out the same day as MA training?...cus i have a nice hole in between classes in the mornings of the days of training. should i not lift wieghts?..or run instead? or niether, because ill be dead for MA training? thanks
  17. Does anyone have any links to any videos of competions with fighters adept in judo or akido...namely in the UFC or K1..maybe just the names of the top competitors who use these styles?..i wondered how these styles would fair in those arenas... also im interesting becuase of the limited amout of videos i have seen, the 'throws' have been jsut westling moves.. also...any know of anygood videos of competitions against different styles, say a style karate vs MT, or TDK vs a style of kung fu, bjj vs....etc.. thanks
  18. yep..well im trying...and streching a lot too.. i was wondering, can you do those all dymanic streches by yourself without a partner? hello fellow oregonian
  19. the weight positioning inst that much a a problem..its just when i have my front foot pointing straight (bacj foot still 90 degrees), thats when its hell....but if i put my foot in about 30 degrees its fine....but i strive for perfection..and that jsut wont do.
  20. hey thanks for the links and book titles... but hey would anyone know of a good martial arts supply store (for books and such) in america?
  21. i too am starting...and working on heian shodan religiously...and i really try to get the bunkai for everything..im a thinker....iabnd the bunkai makes it so much clearer... like what sparky said, i was really at odds with the point of the hammer fist part...untill i foudn the use for breaking your opponents collar bone..now i jsut visulize that! among the other visualizations for each part. hey..anyone know of a book with all the shotokan bunkai for each kata?..im sure theres variablity between senseis and books...but anyone know?...i dont get that much time to rack my sensei's brain during class\ thanks
  22. ok....so i wouldnt say im pidgeon toed, but i walk without any bow of the feet..basically straight (does help when sprinting)...however for this and many other reasons my abductors and adductors are quite inflexible.. (i hate sitting indian style).. so with the stances in mind: on the shotokan back stance (maybe its the same of the other styles..i dont know) i can never get my feet to make that strict 'L' shape with my back and front feet, while mantaining proper hip and quad stance... otherwise i feel like my groin and outer hips are going to explode. so does anyone else have this problem?? anyone not have a bow in thier steps?? anyone know of specific streches or excerises for the adductors/abductors?? thanks...
  23. ok..so on these body squats...when you come up, its explosive i figure, but do you keep heels down?..or do you extend all the way through your calves onto the balls of your feet? also do you get air?
  24. hey....i was kinda talking about weight lifting too. Because ive either been dead before training MA because i lifted before the class that day, or not had much energy for a, post MA training, wieghts workout. hmm does this mean that maybe my MA training is enough of me right now..well hey our sensei does practically kill us every MWF.. ehh but i still want to know if its better to do your other workouts before or after a practise?
  25. hey all i train shotokan 3 times a weeks for 1.5 hours MWF nights and im trying to decide my running/wieght shedule, and if i should either workout earlier that day of just after practise. or just on the days i dont do MA training... what works best without overtraining (my groin/hips are killing me!), since ive just started MA? And what do you guys do? thanks
