  1. judo schedule: M 2hrs, W 2hrs, F 2hrs randori mma: T 2hrs, Th 2 hrs, F 2hrs randori i saw the randori session last friday for judo and mma...adjectives would be: intense, tough, mentally overwhelming ...and brutal ...and i went to my first mma session ever. Today we actually did 100% grappling techniques, and we learned fundamentals of the phases (free, clinch, grapple) and ways to submit...etc ..i of course felt like a fish out of water very awkward and overwhelming.. but that is expected i assume....mat burns hurt! -especially when you're hairy!!...damn spanish blood! it would have been nice to do a little striking but im sure thursday will be mostly that. tomorrow is my first judo session...im using my thick karate gi. i hope it doesnt rip!!!
  2. hmm, well i hope you're right. We're talking about this type of bag right? http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/118oBuDR33L._AA160_.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.amazon.com/s%3Fie%3DUTF8%26rh%3Dn%253A3400271%252Cp_4%253AEverlast%26page%3D1&h=160&w=160&sz=4&hl=en&start=4&um=1&tbnid=EfrlmOB7XjlLIM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=98&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dstanding%2Bheavy%2Bbag%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN
  3. nice stories..... i watched the judo class yesturday, and in a bit im going to try out the pankration mma class....i'll be back later with a post regarding them both
  4. Not that this post is closed for others..... But i'd like some actual human phis and biochemical reasons with regards to: Best time, when/how often to take protien supplements Best time, when/how often to take creatine supplement What makes a stretch session correct and equally incorrect (e.i. only after workout, hold for ateast 1min...etc) not specifically talking about a certain stretch itself), and how often one could stretch a day Thanks for the help! I was in the major for about a year...when switched to growing grapes and making wine.... someone lucked out..
  5. well i was looking at those punching bags with the base of sand/water...but the negative i keep hearing is that the notches where you can raise or lower the 'bag' rub out after awhile and the bag just swings around when you hit it.... your opinions??
  6. please elaborate on your envy... I'm trying to read up on it as well as going to a few classes, the next one is on tuesday. Last one i went to they grappled/striked with about a 70/30 ratio., respectively. A lot of throws in the art?
  7. are you referring to tang soo do and wing chun? Because i have now widened the search to deciding between TSD, Judo, and pankration MMA
  8. An injury post made me want to post about Hip Flexors... I've always had extremely tight and inflexible hip flexors. i dont know how many times i've strained them, and one time i ended up pulling my right illiopsoas which was awful... My question is first: What are conditioning exercises that compliment and help this area, like leg lifts calistenics? Crunches? Running?? -I've heard of some exercises actually being bad for you in that you never get full motion there, e.g. swimming. Second: Of course stretches, what are more stretches for the hip flexors (besides the kneeling hip flex stretch)? Third: Why are my hips so inflexible? HAHA... when sitting indian stlye its uncomfortable, i dont like crossing my leg when sitting on a chair because it stress my hip flexors....etc etc Is this inflexibility due to how my legs are attached to my hips? My bro has larger foot angle outward and slight bowleg then walking and hes super flexible in his hips, whereas i am slightly pigeon toed ( i was a fast sprinter in high school!) and my flexibility there is pathetic? Or does it have to do with sitting on a couch for many hours typing/reading KF posts???
  9. pulled right iliopsoas...funny little word but long lasting pain in my hip flexors where lifting my leg for many weeks was all but a nightmare... ..i've always wondering how to keep them more flexibile and stronger as well...
  10. ..... in england maybe it would be a large flat on top of another large flat?? a duplex is basically two separate places of residence that are generally one notch above a tiny ghetto college apartement complexes... but i still dont have any rafters to drill/screw into to hang anything.
  11. going to jump into this post as i have recently come across a traditional kodokan judo school. I guess being able to throw someone onto any surface (preferably a hard one) is quite a self defense move, but is that pretty much the only major self defence focus in judo? ...never thought the world of grappling ma's cross my path
  12. Cornerman? As in a metal framework that hangs a bag i assume. Well are all stands created equally? Because the rang in prices is huge...
  13. ..odd turn of events. I was about 90% sure i was going to start my new page of MA with the tang soo do school, but i decided to hit up a kodokan judo/MMA dojo for the heck of it.... I had some prior perceptions of this school because of the 'MMA' factor, but i had a long chat with the sensei who runs both programs. Very good vibe. Very methodical and technical focus. And then i stayed for the mma class which was very disciplined, technical and all egos were off the mat. -i always assumed (wrongly) it would be some punks getting crazy, bloody and losing control..etc etc. I was very wrong. So with that said, the grappling is quite opposite to the karate ive focused on, but im intrigued. And the workout is intense and practical applications too boot. I cant wait to check out the traditional judo class as well.... I never thought my path would take me down a non striking route, but all these different styles is very interesting, and moreso this instructor has by far the best impression. I think i'll hit up the other training forums to get some advice on these styels
  14. its been a few days and ive gone to another couple of classes and im starting to feel that TSD is the best choice for my location... TSD has much more sparring/self defense than my previous shotokan dojo which is quite a positive for me...however i can clearly see that it isnt as strict/old school. (younger kids in adult classes goof off at times (age 12 and up equals adult). Also the forms and techniques of intermediate belts arent as 'perfected' as i would have thought. Does that mean each individual is responsible for his own work ethic? And that instructors give more time/intruction to those that really show it? Or is it just that the instructors are more lax and belting happens faster?...hmmm.... i must somehow ask these questions to the sensie w/o sounding arrogant/full of myself...
  15. The reason for the question is that i live in a second story duplex without any visible strong rafters and so i will most likely have to end up getting a heavy bag with stand.... But does the stand really get in the way? I guess if you're going all out and want to move around, but considering im getting back into MA maybe its not a big deal? Anyone with heavy bag not hung on rafters??? Advice?
  16. Currently: between styles. Check out my post and help me out! Would love to have the time, be at physical peak, and ability to afford injuries to practice: Kyokushin and BJJ
  17. Well i wouldnt be too quick to call it a mcdojo... you need to find time/strength to talk to your sensei, if he's not willing to hear you out/help you out, then it becomes a real problem for you. and it could be just stylistically...atleast in during my shotokan stint, it was very intense physically in all aspects, yet we really didn't spar much at all (the one downside)... in hindsite i would have loved to have tried kyokushin but there were none around where i live, but like PAL said, i doubt i could afford a serious injury which is somewhat common in the MA.
  18. Hey all, i've got a post in the general section about deciding what school to choose since there's no shotokan school where i moved... For those of you that have experience in tang soo do can someone give me some comparisons/contrasts between shotokan and TSD. I of course have gone to a few beginners classes but i would like more indepth knowldge. Also, anyone know of any TSD kata videos / form sheets to look? Do they interpret the steps of the kata? Bunkai? thanks!
  19. well i guess i never really stated my goals...and i never asked which was better. i came into MA for many of the same reasons that most people start: more specifically to 1) relieve stress/gain confidence/self compete, 2) get a strong/tough workout 3)self defense tactics. Something about Shotokan just hit me... I was just also blessed with a small class size, seriousness and focus throughout the class, as well as it being cheap since i was a student and it wasn't only means of income for our sensei...etc. I want our vineyards relocated back to where i can practise what i now realize was an excellent dojo!!
  20. Hey all, It's been quite a while sing my last post, back then I was extremely happy doing tradition shotokan..etc etc. Now, due to my new career, I have moved to an area were martial arts gyms are few and far between. I've scoured the land, and without having to drive more like more than one hour i've got two options (both of which arent shotokan) In a nut shell, my old place was cheap, small, with a lot of instructor face time, no bells/whistles, and the workout was insane due to serious training methods. i was there for about 10 months and its been about a year since i left due to moving. Now I have to make a decision because i neeeed to start training! But i can't decide what I should do, making this decision difficult is stylistically but more importantly each of their aspects. Tang Soo Do Pros: Similar in many aspects to shotokan i really feel i would get a strong aerobic/anaerobic work out just like in shotokan good instructor impression Cons: Slight McDojo atmosphere ie; many amenities, lots of young kids, with even some in higher level classes, and having to do a 6 MONTH CONTRACT SIGNING.... Wing Chun Pros: Small setting; makeshift dojo in a large garage, small single digit class instructor good impression interesting real life application... month to month dues Cons: Eventhough the guys sweat, I feel that i would not get a strong workout physically wing chun very opposite to shotokan and thus i feel that my year of shotokan would actual make me progess SLOWER compared to guy who started fresh w/o doing a karate style....my opinion... Now I hope you can see my predicament. I seem to fear the unknown (wing chun), as well as fearing my ability to be seriously focused when maybe the setting/atmosphere is less intense (tang soo do)... When writing this post/novel really I really set myself up for a quick answer that im looking for... but for all of you out there that have had plenty of experience in MA, might be able to give me better/different prespectives on their styles, these characteristics...etc Any Advice???? THANKS!
  21. "The search button is always a good choice..." ...yea but the search engine is not the greatest..unless i havent figured it out, it looks for posts and not the topic subejct. So if i do a search for 'backstance problem'..ill get every post with the word backstance in it....but as i said...maybe im using the search tool wrong...if i am let me know
  22. hey thanks...and yes in the futuro if i have questions that can be answered in previous posts...do let me know...becuase i really dont have enought time to peruse this forums many posts...
  23. good feeback... i too wear my pants when i work kata or basics personally at home or at our university's rec center. for anything else.. its all smelly tshirts and shorts
  24. Posing a question... Anyone train in gym clothes when during kata or basics on your own... or use regular clothes a few times just to 'get the feel'? Or do you HAVE to be in a Gi to really get into your presonal training or to even yell a kai!?
  25. i played everything mainy football track basketball...but you name it. i think they all helped me to gain an a good amount of physique and competitive attitude, but man...they had no bearing on helping me be 'one step ahead' in starting shotokan...sometimes i even feel dyslexic!!...haha and ive always been a team sport player untill well...6 weeks ago and ya i know this is what i should have been doing a long time ago! my training now is soo much more than just a practise or dare i say; a sport. i just wish i had more time to train, and less time learning the pentose phosphate pathway:P ...
