written would be great. we havent worked on them as we should and I would like to brush up on hem. i polished up a little bit over the summer at sensei perry's camp, but still don't have them 100 %. its just something that seemed to have gotten overlooked over the years and needs to be re-established as part of our curriculum. thank you. you can email me at jimmynewton@excite.com. your help is greatly appreciated. jn

front kick to the body and as they come to block low, whip it into a roundhouse to the head before setting the foot down. an oldie but goodie

Thanks for everyones opinions. I was always under the impression that it was a sweep while stepping, but now realize it can both be that and a protection of privacies. I find it unlikely that is simply to strengthen the leg muscles. I am associate with sensei Perry. I actually went to his summer camp a few weeks ago. thanks for the feedback and I hope it it opened some new ideas of thinking for other people. jn

I've heard that. I've heard its for balance. I've even heard its been passed down that way because thats the way they actually walked (which that seems far fetched)... any more thoughts and opinions are most welcome.

Was wondering who can tell me the sigifigance of this? What I'm referring to is what iv'e seen in many Kata. Assuming the left leg is in front..when stepping the right leg comes p and makes a small half circleto the left inside ankle, then right leg placed in front. do you know what I'm tlaking about? I've heard it referred to as "closing the gate" when stepping. Can anyone give me their thoughts or opinions of the signifigance of this. If not clear, I'll try to explain more thoroughly.

What are some useful games for kids?
JimmyNewton replied to marie curie's topic in Instructors and School Owners
not sure if this counts a "GAME", but it is fun, and useful for children and adults. It promotes AWARENESS. I'll purposefully not have my gi on, and have one of the senior students begin stretching and warm-ups. then i'll come in the room in about 5 minutes and tell them I'm going to be about another 5 minutes, i have to take a call and for them to keep keep working out. that first time i come in to tell them i'll be behind, i come in with lots of "props". a brightly colored shirt, clipboard, big socks, specific hat, etc".you can go as crazy as you want. then when i come in that 2nd time in my Gi, I'll ask each student to identify everything I had on. How many times has a victim of violence gave a description that was extremly generic? the point is for them to say..oh he had ona light blue hat, green shirt, a silver watch, wedding band, band-aid on his arm, clean shaven, etc.... i think you get the point. and if you really wear something outlandish, it proves the point and can be funny at the same time. -
I was recently teaching our kids class roundhouses and getting them used to spinning on the ball of thier lead leg. We began just doing quarter turns and cokcing the back leg up. after a while a 5yo raised his hand and said "mr. newton, this spinning on our foot is kind of like squashing a bug." i thought it was pretty funny.

thank you ninja nurse. I'm actually going to the regiser of deeds in my hometown to give them the name, and found the steps needed to register the tax id. also, i was told by a small business consultant, that here in NC, I have to sign a bond with the nc attorney general office. this isbecause I am providing a servixce,, and its basically saying that I will do what i say i will. nothing major. should be up and runing in acouple of weeks. I know someone who is going to let me run an ad on their race car (local) for 150.00 for the month, as well as an ad in the paper, pass out flyers to schools and gyms, and then keep my fingers crossed. -
Hey guys.. I'm goign to be registereing the name of the school I am gling to be teaching through the NC chamber or Commerce. I also know I'll have to get a tax id for selling, gi's sparring gear etc. Are there any other things I should be aware of, as far as insurance, other tax forms and general info as far as the business aspects are concerned
-
thanks for the input. I'm sure as the time gets closer to doing it myself..my Sensei will help me out. as far as the other guy..he doesn't teach kids and is there on monday/s and thursdays at 7. i will get the dojo days he's not there. my students will be his, and he keep his own, and just split the rent of the building. it should be a good opportunity, since most of the legwork has been taken care, such as my sensei already haing customers for me, a place to use, etc. i just have to figure out how to set up the business aspects.

What Constitutes a Good Instructor?
JimmyNewton replied to scottnshelly's topic in Instructors and School Owners
i dont think just because you can't do a technique, doesn't mean you can't teach it. i don;t see these over 60 nfl coaches getting layed out by a 300 lb running back, but they still know how to teach the drills. i don;t see phil jackson dunking like jordan and kobe, but he still knows how to teach the game. same difference inmy opinion -
so none of you guys pay taxes or have business licenses? I am set to start teaching within the next 2 weeks. I will be getting insurance through the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). I beleive 12 bukcs a month covers a student for up to a million dollars. I'm not sure how the tax stuff and all that works yet. I just know my sensei is retiring and passing the torch to me. we are supposed to go over the business side shortly. I know i'm going in the rent with another person who teaches out of the building. I'll keep you posted as to how it goes.

What Constitutes a Good Instructor?
JimmyNewton replied to scottnshelly's topic in Instructors and School Owners
time for my 2 cents.. I agree with the obvious things that have been said already. You have to be able to relate to people well I think. This is one thing that is hard to explain, but i'll try.. I think in addition to what's been said..a good instructor knows when to have "drill sgt" mode as well as "pat on the back, nice work" mode. Its a fine line but he needs to be gentle some days, firm on others. I think a good instuctor has to realize he does not know all..but be willing to share what he does know, with the commitment that he continues to learn as well, whether its attending camps, reading, seminars, etc. also, just be honest. don;t pretend to be something you aren't, know more than you know, or glorify yourself. remain humble, have charisma, stay paitent, keep classes interesting.. these are some of the characteristics i believe signify a good instructor. -
i am actually set to begin teaching in the next 2 weeks. I have aplace picked and only 2 students waiting for me to begin. My sensei is retiring and passing the torch to me. It's an hour away from where i live, but my family is there and i enjoy getting to see them. My wife is due to have our 1st child in November. She knows i'll b gone 2wice a week, but sees the potential in this opportunity and is totally behind me. I am very fortunate.

Why Did You Open a School?
JimmyNewton replied to scottnshelly's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I am going to begin teaching within the next month, as I recevied my black belt March 28th. I'm doing so because my sensei is retiring and passing the torch on to me. another reason i want to teach is because i think kids now-a-days need something positive. There is much to gain from martial arts besides self defense. I want to preserve the art and be a good influence for someone. my Sensei always proveded a "shoulder to lean on" offer advice, etc outside of class, and i want to give someone hope. Plus some supplemental income for doing something you love is always a bonus too -
yeah its like even when i played basketball in highschool, we always called the Coach, "coach" or mr. peeler. first name basis is too casual to me, but outside of class, we can call our classmates by first name. Mr. and ms/mrs during class

i call my instructor Mr. McIntosh, Sensei McIntosh, or sometimes just plain Sensei. any of the 3 are acceptable. nin tai...i may be training with you this summer. i'm a Shorinkan studnet in Charlotte, training in Shelby
