Well I finally got back to class this week after a 3 year lay off........man I was nervous and ready to get a good work out on......when i arrived there were faces i hadn't seen before and some familiar faces......it was like a reunion..... well needless to say I was happy to also see my teacher Master Tom Hook....... I stepped on the floor took my place and class began......I was surprised how my body responded to the warm-ups, and the drills we went through......even the kata's that i hadn't worked on when i relaxed they flowed like water........my teacher responded......you may miss class, but your body and mind remembers the training.......and the techniques.......well cant wait until next class.....

I failed the test last night.............I spent so much time preparing myself physically, until i forgot to mentally prepare. I worked hard on all 14 Katas but forgot to work on the bo kata that i knew like the back of my hand. I was sure that the bo kata would be one of the first one performed........guess what it was the last one .i did 14 katas very well , and forgot the bo kata my favorite one. This was the format of the testing ....teaching the class.......going through the warm ups,the basics explaining each technique then doing them at full speed with power. Then came the self defense, we did 30 self defense techniques by this time i am really pumped up. Disarming weapons from an opponent, takedowns with finishing techniques,10 one step promise fights.......circle fights, and then kats. all went well until I noticed i began to get worn out....when i did the bo kata i forgot two moves and screwed it all up. My instructor informed me in front of the class that I didn't pass. Man was I happy.............I didn't get disappointed or upset. I knew that my instructor believed I could pass...........he had confidence in my aBILITY, AND STILL DOES. For me I knew I had screwed up and didn't want to pass. I don't want rank given to me I want to EARN it. So back to hard training and mental preparation. OSU

I can remeber the first time i score a point on my instructor....he left an opening and I scored with a roundhouse to the side of his head. He looked at me and said GOOD, now you are allowing your training to take over. He has always left openings to test our ability to see and act. If you take advantage then he his happy. If you are at a place in training where you should be aware of these openings and don't take advantage then he GETS YOU. It is not a question of beating the insructor because many of us know that it may be impossible to beat him, but how much respect do you have for him to humbly take advantage of the opening for it is part of your training

I finally got a chance to test for brown belt. The test was put off because of some extra work i needed. I was grateful that my instructors pointed off some things in technique that needed improvement. Well i arrived at the dojo @ 12:30. The actual test began at 1:00 It was 4:45 p.m. when it was finally over. I was told by Master Tom Hook that you have earned this rank, because I don't just give them out. I was nervous doing katas, but totally relaxed with the sparring full speed with no pads. my son asked me last night " dad what if you don't pass" I replied " I will right back at class Monday night grinning kicking and punching" I feel that my training has really just began thanks for all the tips, and insight you guys offer OSU

kyokushin_coe posted a topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
hey guys i am getting ready for my next rank test in 3 weeks. i am already sweating i have to go do all of our strikes, blocks, and kicks with good technique using the heavey bag , i must have focus , speed , and power 30 self defense moves with finishing techniques included 13 katas 4 concrete block break, 6 board break using any kicking technique i choose and controlled sparring with no pads agianst 3 black belts i am excited and training everyday. the only thing i am concerned about is the controlled sparring any suggestions. -
My second time using nunchucks in class was a very painful one. Sensie Danny Deason who i beleieve is exellent with this weapon was going over the very basics with us . I thought doing the figure 8 with the nunchucks was going fine so i tried to speed it up a little. Low and behold i hit myself in the family jewels with them. Boy that HURT. has anyone else ever hurt themselves while weapon training

what makes many of us that study the martial arts so cocky, and full of ourselves? I posted a video on UTUBE of a board break i did, i got a response from this "highly skilled kicking specialist" who informed me that the kick was useless, slow, and he was 100% sure that i would not work on a trained martial artist. now guys not being critical but what makes us think that one style is superior to the other, or our abilities are superior to someone else. i have seen many martial artist get the crap beat out of them by ordinary guys on the street who did not follow the you swing and i counter method taught in many of our dojo's i believe that a cocky attitude will get you hurt, because you are not cautious enough to walk away , stay out of certian places, or underestimating the guy you may be about to fight. i have had 2 real street combats in wich i was blessed to walk away, but does that mean i am invincible, NO lets stay humble , and train to be ready for anything if we can and train to know when to walk away this guy is a so called kicking specialist whatever that means what if you are overwhelmed by a guy who knows how to really fight and fight dirty. this guy stays within punching range, and jabs, you hooks you fights you very dirty ,or throws you to the ground and his friends stomp your guts out will being a black belty kicking specialist with a cocky attitude help you then No

I was parking my car going into my favorite coffee shop.....I got out of the car and turned to see a guy standing maybe 15 feet from me. I looke dat him and saw that he was wearing a tee shirt that was tucked in his pants. he said "I need some money" i replied " i dont have any money to give you sir" this guy then said " you lying you going in ck's you dont go in there unless you got money. agian i replied.i dont have any money to give you. he raises his voice......." n i will take you money" and took a step towards me. i said.....if you want to die for this money in my pocket then come on.i will kill you and call the police while i stand over your body. he stopped backed up, and said " i hate people like you" and walked off. did i go over the top saying that i would kill him............. i dont want a confrontation from anyone...i just want to live and let live.........bugt i also believe in being as agressive as the one that attacks you, i believe in fighting harder , and going for the gusto if need be.

i am not an expert on this. we are taught how to use our body weight behind kicks that we intend to do major damage with. learning to focus power through an object is how i have been taught. for instance if i kick the heavy bag with a ushiro geri (power back kick) i use the momentum of my body and i dont stop that momentum until i have gone through my target. we train to kick through the bag. if a man is holding the bag for me then we focus on the mans spine who holds the bag. so we kick with enough force to go through to his spine. when we break boards to simulate bones we use the same theory. dont hit the board hit what is behind the board, this board is only in the way of your target with that in mind our white belts have progressed from one board to 2 - 4 boards. i hope this helps

There is a young man in my neighborhood that walked down the street in his karate uniform. I had the opportunity to speak with him. He told me he was a 2nd degree black belt in Pasa Ryu (hope this is the right spelling) I asked why did he wear his uniform out in public like that. His response was "I just like to let people know who they will be dealing with if anyone tries something". A week after this conversation he was at the corner store and as usual in his uniform with his blackbelt on. A guy who hangs out around the store taking out garbage, and doing odd jobs asked him "is that your black belt" The young man said "yes". So are you pretty tough Yeah I have won several tournaments. Then the guy asked "think you could give me a few lessons" Yeah Then the guy hit him square in the face and knoked him out . People laughed. I didn't I knew that this cocky attitude would one day get the best of this guy. I only hope that we will learn as martial artist not to be cocky. remeber one sucker punch can end the fight. Coe

I PASSED MY RANK TEST TONIGHT( PURPLE BELT BLACK STRIPE). I WAS SOMEWHAT CONCERNED ABOUT MY STAMINA. I WAS ABLE TO GET THROUGH THE HOUR AND FORTY FIVE MINUTE TEST WITHOUT MUCH DIFFICULTY. I BELIEVE THAT IN TIMES LIKE THESE WHEN YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT WE MAY GET NERVOUS TENSE UP AND ROB OURSELVES OF ENERGY. SO I MADE UP IN MY MIND , YOU ARE READY, RELAXE , TRUST IN YOUR TRAINING, AND DO IT. THANKS FOR ALL YOU GUYS HELP

Rank Test
kyokushin_coe replied to kyokushin_coe's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
THE HEART ATTACK WAS IN 1999 . SINCE THEN I HAVE RECOVERED THANKS TO JESUS. MY DOCTOR WAS AMAZED AT THE RECOVERY AND ALSO ENCOURAGED ME TO BEGAN EXERCISING. A FRIEND OF MINE TOLD ME ABOUT KYOKUSHINKAI AND ASKED ME TO COME TAKE A FEW FREE CLASSES. I DID LIKED IT AND CONTINUE TO THIS DAY. NO EGO INVOLVED JUST LOVE TAKING CARE OF MY BODY NOW. A HEART ATTACK MAKES YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY ABOUT SOMETHINGS. I HAD TO DO A COMPLETE LIFESTYLE CHANGE. BETTER DIET, GETTING SLEEP, ENJOYING MY BEAUTIFUL WIFE AND KIDS , AND ABOVE ALL TAKING TIME TO PRAY AND TALK TO GOD -
I am getting prepared for my next rank test, (purple belt black stripe) in kyokushinkai. I anticipate the test but also will be very glad when its over. I must do all katas i have learned from white belt all the way to present, all kicks, punches, blocks, and throws must be done with proper technique, power, and focus. My only concern is stamina, being 42 years old and a heart attack survivor who the doctors told never to preach agian, drive a car, or even go fishing. Does anyone have any suggestions , such as exercise, diet changes or any thing helpful I would gladly appreciate it OSU

I stood there ready to fight totally ready to destroy my enemy every kick, every punch was thrown with lightning speed he countered, his kicks seemed faster, more powerful, and his criticism of my skills were thrown at me with vulgarity he grabbed my throat choking the very life out of me i had to fight through fear , anxiety, and every concievable emotion my legs became heavy, my arms ached he kept coming it seemed my enemy was growing stronger with every second i stood back through all the smoke and destruction caused by our battle i ltook a good look at my enemy he looked just like me then i realized this great battle was with myself the greatest enemy to me was me. It is not what other say about you that limits you, but it is your perception of your self. your greatest enemy is YOU for we are more critical of ourselves than others. it is not what others say about you that matters, it is what we say about ourselves that will change us. keep training never say i cant but have a i can do mentality JUST a little something i thought up hope someone is benefited by it.
