  1. For one Balance in kata and sparring..

Transiton from once stance to another..

    Kata in Ura..

    does that answer yur question?

Yes it does , thx :karate:

Kata in Ura can be very useful to improve balance , focus and physical strength , I agree with you on that point . It can also do some good to your kumite , and of course kata will improve kata (and kata stances) …

However kata will not notably increase fighting skills , in kyokushin , we need endurance , stamina and conditioning along with speed and technique : elements that kata do not provide ..

  2. without the kata, you don't have the techniques.

Why shouldn't I have the techniques without 'em , so ur basically saying that : BJJ , MT , boxing , kickboxing , judo and all the other styles that don't practice kata don't have correct techniques ??

alsey , no offence , but whenever I read a post of yours I have the feeling that karate is an inferior martial art for farmers and hopeless , I mean yes , it was developed by farmers but why shouldn’t it be effective against skilled fighters ! you say that you may never be in a position where you have to fight a martial arts expert , but what if it happened ??

  3. I thought about this topic today for some reason the idea just popped in my head...

When i started training again my footwork was just horrible and i was mad at myself for the sloppyness and i feel Kata is what helped me and my balance so i am greatful for kata.

How , I wonder ... And what do you mean by footwork , is it kumitee footwork or the standard katas footwork ??

  4. welcome to kyokushin , I remember I had the same question in my first training session , all went normal after few classes and I got the answers for all my questions & I belive the other guys have answerd your questions well ..

In regards of what would you call your instructor outside the dojo , I always refer to hin as sensei , or master .. And I believe he is more than capable of defending himself in a street situation .. My students call me 'sempai' outside the dojo since they are used to it .

  5. like elbows_and_knees said, once you learn the kata you should begin practicing the techniques contained in it with a partner. the aim is that with enough practice, you'll be able to use the kata movements on a fully resisting opponent.

I have a better idea , instead of mastering your kata first (which will consume a lot of time ) and then breakin' it into training drills with partner (which will also take additional time since kata/forms are different than real application ) , why not cuttin' it short and start learning those blocks/strikes/grapples directly with a partner and in a practical way !!!!

I mean , lets face it , have you ever seen somebody using the horse stance in a tournament or a street fight to apply a strike or a grapple ???

  6. Knee kicks are perfectly legal and one of the most important kicks in kyokushin karate , it can be applied in different forms to different sides of the body (and head) .. Grabbing while kneeing ur opponent is allowed ( in international and black belts competitions ) clinching and kneeing however is not allowed in kyokushin

  7. Another shotokan effectiveness thread ...

So far most of the guys who have posted are shotokan practitioners , so of course they are going to say shotokan is effective ….

And I personally AGREE that shotokan is a very good style for self defense , only if it has been taught as a self defense style not as a sports MA , and to be honest there are tones of sports shotokan dojos around the world , few of the schools I have visited teach shotokan as it should be taught ..

I think that JKA should make competition rules a little bit harder ???

  8. Yep , it has been a year and my brother is 11 by now :)

To answer your question , he is still fat , he even gained more weight (And height) , and he is not interested at all in learning how to fight , he likes soccer though , so I signed him in a local soccer team ..

I personally think that it’s not important if he does MA or no as long as he is doing some kind of sports ..
