Shock horror! I'm starting karate..
monkeygirl replied to Bon's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
You may want to refer to the "in-school dating" thread...wherever that one is. I'd do a link but.... *shrugs* I'm not the Link Queen No offense KickChick -
It's like this one.... A man walks into a bar and says "ow!"
-
My school is not a "pure" tkd school. (see my sig) It's not even really "modern-american" tkd. That's just what I call it for these boards! From what I understand, PURE Tkd on its own is more of a sport. But when you mix in other styles, taking the most effective techniques from each, it can be killer. TKD schools are pretty different from each other...if you can, shop around! If you're not satisfied with the self-defense in your school, whatever your style may be, try some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu...I hear it's pretty good

I haven't met a SOBER person yet who could stand it...they're really annoying!! But hey, if it works...more power to 'em.

Fighting..tense...arg, please help

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about...for me this is especially stressful because I'm testing for my BlackBelt in 23 days!! I agree with Bretty101...people from your school eventually learn your tricks. I'll tell you what my instructor told me: it's easy to be a great fighter at green belt...but when you get up to brown belt it becomes a lot more difficult to land techniques (this happened to me). Why? Because everyone ELSE's guards are getting better! This doesn't mean they're better fighters than you, it just means they're getting more defensive. Feel proud that they felt the need If they're still scoring points on you, you need to focus on YOUR defense for awhile, then sit back and wait for them to open themselves up. Maybe even throw a few techniques to see how they react. If you throw a punch high that misses by a mile, do they lift their guard anyway, opening themselves up for that sidekick? Just because they're getting better now, don't get discouraged. Different fighters blossom at different times. You blossomed early, and they're just developing now. I think the discouragement from not getting points on "easy" fighters is giving you problems with this one "not-so-easy" fighter. I was a very successful fighter in my days as a beginner/intermediate belt, against people of my own school and rank (I'm still OK against ppl I've never met before). Now however, they've caught up to me and are giving me a run for my money!!! I'm happy for them, but at the same time freaking out 'cause I need to improve. That just makes me more tense! Try fighting people from different schools...tournaments, etc. We have something called "Dog Days" where a bunch of schools come together and fight on a Saturday. Pop in a CD and fight for a whole song. What a workout! Just accept who you are and the way things worked out...all you can do is improve, and nobody expects any more than that. -
BLADE III

Blade 3??? Man, I haven't even gotten a chance to see Blade 2!!! I did like the original Blade though...even if it was kinda gross. I heard Blade 2 was even more graphic than Blade 1. -
The Art of Fighting Without Fighting
monkeygirl replied to Ti-Kwon-Leap's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
that's genius ..... I've only ever been in one true fight in my entire life...that was with my cousin when I was, oh say 11, and I still have the scar to prove it! Now I do avoid some fights in the dojo with psychological help. If someone is being annoying and repeating everything I say, I say a really big word that I know they can't pronounce...such as "antidisestablishmentarianism"....to be honest I don't really know what it means, but it works! If they ask me what it is, I say "You can't even say it! Why do you care?" Something in a foreign language works well, too. "Du reicht anglich eine ladung aus dunger" German, even if the grammar was screwed up. Basically it means they smell like a load of crap. -
Post your humorous Martial arts links here!

Yeah, it's coming out spring 2003...along with all the other AOL Time Warner movies...(can you say "monopoly"?) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, I believe Lord of the Rings 2 is coming out, and some other films. So many movies, so little time! -

OMG that's disgusting...!!! While I understand your intentions, and I think it's kinda funny too...after boiling on it for awhile I'm thinking differently. Do you know how hard it is to be a female martial artist and be taken seriously?? Half of the teenage males think you're absolutely worthless until you kick them in "nads" (nice one jade_lotus) and show them your true salt. Now, a lot of it has to do with the backwards community I live in, but I know there have been quite a few ppl who looked down their nose at me because I was a female martial artist. When you add guys who are on the prowl (until nearly every guy has asked you out in some form or other), it's uncomfortable! There's only one other girl in my class that comes regularly...other than that it's completely male. So when we get into things like ground sparring, etc., and the guy you're rolling around on the floor with just asked you out (and you turned him down!), it's kinda uncomfortable when he's grabbing some flesh. Bon, if she's not minding your attention, go right ahead...but I wish ppl wouldn't encourage this kind of behavior...it's not so much getting asked out, it's the simple fact that they WILL NOT STOP! Weeks afterward, they're either still hitting on you and making life difficult, or sulking from rejection and making life miserable. I'm not saying this is true for everyone--it happens to me especially because I'm teaching at the dojo 6 days a week--but why does it have to be true for ME?? Yah this should prolly be in the dating post, but I'm too lazy. -
I have noticed that that happens to me as well, diamondick. If you also have endurance problems, this can mean a few things. You may have asthma. If this only happens when you exercise, it could be exercise-induced asthma. I live in a valley where breathing problems run rampant, so I see a lot of this in students. Or, it could mean that there is something wrong with you heart, e.g. a virus or something like that. If this is really bugging you and messing with your performance, I'd suggest that you see a doctor...maybe get a PFT (pulmonary function test).

Nobody knows more about karate then a green belt. If you don't believe it, just ask him!

Why did you join the martial arts?
monkeygirl replied to LeaF's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I started martial arts because my Dad decided if he was going to spend money on a program, it would be karate instead of dance. That way, I could at least defend myself. -
Welcome to karateforums! Best of luck and least of injuries!!
