TKD: The Practitioner's Club
monkeygirl replied to Maestro's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I love TKD. I'm naturally flexible, so having a style that lets me kick above my head is pretty nice. I'm also naturally short When you're 5'2", reaching with your legs is sometimes the only way you can reach! I love forms, because I'm a ham. I know that when I do a kata, everyone is looking at me...so I want to make them go "wow!". Doing that at a tournament where nobody knows me, is one of the biggest thrills. As far as sparring goes, well that's a love-hate relationship. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it. Sometimes it's just OK. I pretty much love everything about it, including teaching it! -
Muay Thai interests me because it is such an agressive art. I'm pretty sure it's "full contact", or as close as you can get. I'm also jealous of their strong kicks (I'm 5'2" like Mike), and wonder if maybe some of their training methods would help me increase power. However, MT looks pretty brutal on the body, and I don't need any more injuries

One Inch Punch
monkeygirl replied to BKJ1216's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
This was one of Bruce Lee's famous punches, that and the three-inch punch. He could actually unseat someone from their chair from only one inch away! Sounds pretty wild. Like AndrewGreen said, however, it's probably only good for demonstrations. Bruce Lee himself had to "charge up" the punch, that is, concentrate for awhile before throwing the punch. If you do that in a streetfight, you're going to either get knocked out or have your arm broken. I suppose it would be OK for a surprise attack. Now, it's possible that Bruce used this pause to create dramatic effect and get the audience's attention, but who knows? If you meant efficient in terms of being good for demonstrations, then yes. It's a very impressive punch, when done correctly. It's also very powerful, so whoever you're going to demonstrate on better have some serious abs...or some form of kicking shield. -
How long did it take you guys to get to your rank?

It took me about 3 years to get my black belt. -
I like that idea. Can't remember seeing any funny ones lately.

I thought some of MY metaphors were weird...I also got these in an e-mail, but they're still funny. Gotta love that last one with the tongue...

Some schools (I know mine does), will not teach regular classes to children until they're 7 or 8 years old, sometimes older. (we take them as young as 3, and I'm sure there are others who do, too) Instead, they teach classes that are a little more like playtime with a martial arts theme, usually 30 mins long. They will probably still learn some punches & kicks, but it's not going to be as intensive as normal training. This is because most kids at that age simply don't have the focus for a 45 min-long class or longer, with lots of complicated techniques and forms. The "playtime" class may seem kind of wimpy when compared to kids/adult classes, but it's really an excellent way to build focus, attention span, self-confidence, memory, balance, and all sorts of things. The kids usually do a lot of physical stuff in class, so they're nice and worn out for their parents Now, I'm speaking of the classes that my particular school teaches, but I know that a lot of schools that have these programs teach them in a similar way. If you call some of the schools listed in the phone book, and ask if they accept 6-year-olds, it will probably narrow your search down some. Some schools teach adults and teenagers only. Whether or not they don't like dealing with kids, or if their style simply doesn't suit children very well, some schools are just like that.

You reminded me of Emeril Lagase (sp?) there for a sec.

Yay! Finally a quiz I'll do good at That is, when I come home from running around today. Don't have time to do it right yet. -
Please remember that the "pros and cons" to high kicking are not facts, but opinions. Every situation with kicking high/not kicking high is circumstantial. Therefore, any conclusions that can be drawn from these opinions are opinions themselves; no one is right or wrong or better than the other. With that in mind, you can still give your opinion as to why you think kicking is good/bad. The other members can then decide for themselves whether or not they agree, or have changed their minds because of your explanation. Thanks!

I realize now why the thread was put into the Korean Arts Forum, but it seems to be becoming a more generalized topic, so I moved it to General Chat.

A cyber charter school is school over the Internet. A lot of the reading and stuff is offline, just the tests have to be taken online. I'm going to do this all through high school. Before high school, I was homeschooled the normal way. It's pretty cool...I'm learning a lot, and last year I had a 4.0 GPA I'd say the only downside to it is the small stuff, like not having a prom ( ), and this photo ID thing. But I'll live.
