  1. I think Bulletproof Monk is probably kung fu.
  2. Actually the picture looks like the guy buried his foot pretty far into the sand so as to keep good balance.
  3. It's infectious!
  4. I don't have any experience in the sword, but I don't see where missing the cord would affect the sword or the use of it. If you find that it gives a better grip, well then that would be an improvement, I guess. Then again I could be wrong.
  5. Nah, the foot position is all in the ankle. Plus, his upper body is slightly rotated...they aren't perfectly aligned, which is the really hard part. But they're pretty close. That's about what my sidekick would look like right now since I'm having some problems remembering to keep my shoulders aligned...they'd probably be a little more squared with my target All-in-all, the sidekick is one of the simplest kicks to throw...it's mastering the proper timing and use in sparring that's difficult
  6. clever...probably best to watch with speakers turned off though...that guy's voice makes me cringe.
  7. OoPs. Sorry for messing up your thread mojo Kensai Here's a pic of a nice, clean sidekick. http://www.karatethejapaneseway.com/photos/Young_Sensei_sidekick_at_the_beach_mono.jpg
  8. Whichever method you choose will work I suppose.
  9. That's why it's a challenge! Gotta make a good article in a limited amount of time. I think we can handle it
  10. Sounds like a brilliant plan, Niel!
  11. *Sigh* I suppose it's all right...but the Great Hamburger God will not smile upon this occasion.
  12. Peanut or plain, peanut or plain...NOW IS THE TIME!! Sorry I'm having an attack of the goofs
  13. Until your entire class figures out your back kick Yes, it happened. However, it is a very effective technique.
  14. Brick wall all the way! Being able to judge your distance so you don't hit things is OK, and a very useful skill to have. However, you still have to land your punches, and for that you'll need to control the power of your punches, not just the range. The brick wall uses the incredibly wise Sensei Pain! Make sure you're still using good technique, though. You don't want to get in the habit of throwing slow punches just because it's easier to keep them soft. After a little practice, start increasing the speed of your punches to the brick wall. Controlling power at high speed can be pretty difficult, but will pay off in the end. Good luck!
  15. If I had a digital camera, I would take a picture of me doing the technique. My "favorite" techniques tend to change periodically. Right now I'm pretty partial to using a sidekick in sparring. A couple of my favorite techniques to do during floorwork (just because they're flashy and I can excute them quite well): Jump inside crescent kick, spinning back kick, jump snap kick, 360 sudo stance, and even a good jump back kick (on a good day). So what if they're not practical for sparring...they're still fun!
  16. Remember that these are just opinions. As long as everyone keeps the discussion clean and respectful, I see no problem with the thread
  17. sorry Actually, Peanut M&Ms are my favorite, but I'm not supposed to eat nuts because of my braces So what did my parents give me for Christmas? A BOX FULL OF CHOCOLATE-COVERED NUTS!!!! That was the meanest gift ever. The point was that the wood box the nuts came in had a really cool wood-burned pattern on it...the gift was really the box. I think it was just my parents' sick sense of humor
  18. Nah don't go easy on them! Sometimes in life we have to make the really tough decisions, like whether to get Peanut or Plain M&Ms...this is one of those moments!!
  19. I've been getting back into practicing with the kamas again. I'm right-handed, and one thing I've noticed is that my left hand performs kama spins at a MUCH slower speed than my right hand. Other than repetition and lots of practice, how can I increase my left hand's speed? Any help would be appreciated
  20. Many martial arts styles don't allow their students to learn to use the sword until they reach dan ranking. That is unless it's a style like kendo, iaido, or any other art that is mainly based on the sword. If you do decide to dabble a little in the sword, stick with a wooden one for a long time! My instructor likes to tell us a horror story about a man who did a sword kata for competition. It was a beautiful, fluid kata, the best one he'd seen all day. Definitely in the market for first place. As the sword guy was coming back to attention, he went to sheath his sword...but missed. He very neatly put the sword completely through his left side...and slowly pulled it back out. This guy acted like nothing happened, and nobody would have even guessed...if he hadn't been wearing a white gi, that is. That story makes me want to stick with bokken for a long, long time.
  21. 1. Martial Arts 2. Friends & Family 3. Music - Listening to it, Playing it, Writing it...I love it all! I would've put sleep in there, but decided against it. I only had three choices, after all.
  22. My favorite Messenger program is MSN...most of my dojo buddies are on MSN. My screen name for that is monkeygirl_tm@yahoo.com yes it works, even though it's a yahoo address, it works! I don't really like AIM that much, but it works...my screen name for that is monkeyblackbelt. Don't forget guys: if you want to share your IM screen names with everyone, just go into your Profile and put them in! Then, the information will be there for all to see. Every time you make a post, there will be a button for IM next to the "profile pm email www" buttons, whether it's AIM, MSNM, ICQ or any combination of the three.
