  1. Welcome to the forums! You're never too old to become proficient at the martial arts. At least, not at 19 anyway. You may want to head over to the "Getting Started in the Martial Arts" forum, which is really good for finding a dojo. Good luck with your search!
  2. The dizzy guy. I've fought a few people who just run circles around you CONSTANTLY. They don't throw techniques, they just shuffle (flat-footed) in a circle around you. They never stop and they spin at the same speed. One such guy was a student of mine. Our dojo had a rule that if a student was below the rank of green belt, you couldn't touch him in sparring...just "shadow boxing" with that person, regardless of your own rank. So until this guy reached green belt, I couldn't even smack him with a roundhouse to stop his spinning progress. Just around and around and around and around....
  3. OK, we're getting really off-topic here. Let's get back to gross foods! Such as, my school's Mexican cuisine...they serve it at least twice a week without fail. Everyone just gets a sandwich or something else.
  4. Well...mayonnaise IS the spread of gods.... I never said I AGREED with the statement. I just quoted it.
  5. I love that movie. "If it's not Scottish, it's CRAP!!"
  6. This is a topic for Health Training & Fitness.
  7. I am moving this thread to the Korean Arts forum. Please keep the conversation respectful...no style bashing.
  8. Scottish by descent...last name is McBeth.
  9. eeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwww
  10. This is just a theory, but you are probably nervous because you are afraid to "correct" anyone? If you are a top student and know your material very well, nobody can really dispute you. It happens on rare occassions, but those are usually just what we like to call "brain farts". It's a technical term. Anyway, don't be afraid of people's reactions when you correct them. If you do it respectfully, there shouldn't be a problem. Just say something like "That's a great punch, but try to extend it a little further next time", and you'll be fine. Anyone who gets upset over that is a little oversensitive. With time, you'll earn the respect of the students. Helping them individually before class, or taking a student aside and working with them one-on-one is a great thing to do. You'll gain their respect, and get to know the student. As the students start to like and respect you, your job gets a little easier. I hope that helps! Speaking in front of the class can be very unnerving for people. I never had a problem with it myself (I'm a loudmouth), so I can't really help you there.
  11. Cold haggis is good, believe it or not. I wish my school cafeteria would make haggis. Wait, I take that back...I don't want them to foul up such a lovely part of my heritage.
  12. Anything tasty that is baking... Scotch brand cellophane tape. Don't know why but I LOVE that stuff. Maybe it just reminds me of Christmas... A nice, manly cologne on a nice man... Which reminds me of something interesting: Some people have been researching genetics and smells and stuff. If you have a sample of Man A's sweat, and Women A, B and C: Woman A finds the smell disgusting Woman B is not able to detect the smell Woman C finds the smell very pleasant When you compare the genetic possibilities between Woman C and Man A, you find that they are very physically compatible and are destined to have very healthy offspring together. Anyway, I just think that's really cool. So, ladies...if you smell any nice sweaty guys in the dojo..
  13. This belongs in the health training & fitness forum, so I'll move it there
  14. Welcome to the forums!!
  15. Well, I just got the unofficial results back from my first-ever SAT! The scores are as follows: Math: 650 Verbal: 700 Total: 1350 While they're not as high as I'd like them to be, they're still better than my big brother's first scores, so I'm happy Anyway, just thought I'd share.
  16. So true, so true
  17. Hehe...I just realized that I never listed all the equipment I used to wear...("used to" because I don't train in a dojo anymore, and don't get to spar) Here goes: Shin pads Sparring boots Chest protector Gloves Mouthguard Helmet w/facecage I felt like the Stay-Puf marshmallow man. Honestly. I don't know how I ever won any tournament matches.
  18. You'll probably find yourself doing a louder kiai when you breathe this way To help you practice this, try laying on the floor on your back...you should be able to feel it a little better.
  19. I'm going to move this to the Karate forum.
  20. 5'3"-ish, 100lbs Definitely underweight. I have pretty low body fat and I'm fairly muscular...not huge muscles, but they're pretty toned. Before I started lifting four times a week, I weighed about 98 lbs, so I'm gaining muscle mass. I have huge thighs thanks to my mother (in her prime she could leg press 600 lbs), and pretty well-defined tricep and deltoid muscles.
  21. You kind of love to hate it. It makes you cringe and keep coming back for more.
  22. Upstate NY has a few that are close to that. For the most part, though, it's pretty exaggerated.
  23. My parents' anniversary is Super Bowl weekend too! Oddly enough, my dad said he wasn't even going to watch the super bowl!! He watches every other game of the year, but apparently not this one. A lot of my teachers at school are watching it, basically so they can have parties, eat food, and watch a lot of commercials. They don't even care that much about the game, especially since it's supposed to be a low-scoring game.
  24. I'm moving this to Martial Arts & Entertainment.
  25. I'm confused as to how wrist/ankle weights don't work MA muscles..? You're going through the same movements that you normally do, but with resistance (weight).
