Worst Idea Ever = Beatings
Knifehand007 replied to Knifehand007's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Nice... thanks for the confidence booster.... 50% are saying that i will no long be recognized as human when i'm done... LOL -
I've sparred twice in my style... and lord knows how many times in a nonMA format. Sparring is fighting, but controlled fighting. Your goal is not subdue your opponent (a friend most likely) but to work on technique. Tournament sparring is ususally point based and the opponents have a certain level of control as to not injure their counterpart.

TSD doesn't bow anything like i'm used to. We bow with our hands at our sides. We keep our heads down. as we bow down we say, "Ko Mop Soo Ne Da" (phonetic spelling). Then he hold our fists out, slightly bent and then say "Tang Soo!" and rise. I'm used to the way you are describing.

Worst Idea Ever = Beatings

I told him about this post... he got a huge smile and told me I have nothing to worry about. I'm glad you see the humor in this... the other forum felt like critizing me...Grr.. Anyways... He has his recertifation for Cho Dan tomorrow, i wished him luck, he wised me luck (on my test). He has no malice against me... so i'm not too worried...I just want to learn how to spar, nothing wrong with that... -
yeah... i wasn't referring to you... but what you said made me think of something similar....
-
So do most other MA schools. I not saying your being critical. Generally speaking, since i've joined this forum; there has been a lot of style bashing. Whats the Deal? Everyone has different strengths and ways of doing things. People bash TSD, TKD, MTK, XMA...ect, everyone bashes everyone elses style... This has got to stop. There is no perfect style, no perfect person. I like TSD, that doesn't mean i think your style is bogus. It means i like doing things traditionally. If you don't be glad your not a TSD student. But because i'm tradtionally trained, don't think i'm a pushover because your in the next best thing. I was talking to some young green belts (about 11-12 years old), they were fooling around like kids do. One of the cocky ones even told me they could beat me. I told them don't get cocky. I pointed at my belt, i might be a yellow belt, but that only shows what i've learned in TSD. You may know more TSD, but i am older and wiser. Belts are nice, but its up here (points to cranium) that counts. They all looked down and nodded. I told them, i applaud you for achieving your green belt (then i bowed to them), but don't let it get to your head. Same thing goes with styles. You may be in the most Hardcore MA out there, You go to fight me, you may not win; if i were in Hapkido, i would use your engery against you. Each style has strengths and weaknesses, but ultimatly it is the character of each person in the style that proves the effectiveness.

Little from Column A and Little from Column B. I know he won't go all out, but he won't make it easy on me, infact, i want him to challenge me... -

LOL...I'm glad you guys saw the humor in that... on the other forum i posted this on, they critized me for not sparring underbelts... ::shakes head:: LOL, i will definently try... The BB and I are good friends, i don't think he'll hurt me too bad... -
So, as some of you know, i'm pumped about my first tournament. If i go and spar other yellow/orange belts, there isn't much i can learn there, because they are just as inexperienced as i am. So i got the bright idea... why don't i ask a black belt to spar me so they can help me and all. Well, there is only one Dan i know well enough to ask such a favor, My girlfriend's father. How many fathers have their daughters boyfriends willing suject themselves to beatings? Just one... moving on. I went over to my girlfriend's house after my TSD class and hung out for a while... He dad comes home from his Dan class. My first words to him were, "So when are you going to kick my *?" The largest smile i've ever seen... i don't think i've ever seen anyone so happy to hear that. We agreed on a date... and I, being a man of my word (and i really want to learn how spar really well) plan on sticking to it. Any thoughts... (forget the second other thread... i forgot to add a option to the poll)

what is tsd?
Knifehand007 replied to cjburns77's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
So much to talk about. I am a student of TSD. Fun Fact... in michigan, in my specific style (tang soo do moo duk kwan) Our Dans have beaten Tae Kwon Do Dans every time< i just learned that fact tonight. TSD and TKD are similar, but TSD is more of an art. TKD, Huge generalization, is more sport than TSD. we practice Ho Sin Sul, Il Soo Sik, Hyungs, and basic actions(don't know the korean word for that). There are five different types of TSD... Its a traditional style. I want to keep this short, if you want to know more, PM me or check out http://www.internationaltangsoodofederation.com/ -
Conflicted about upcoming promotion...
Knifehand007 replied to Beka's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think your Sensei was impressed with the fact that you came back. I was playing league football, and i got a pretty good rattling during the game. I was dizzy and couldn't see straight. I said to hell with this and left. After your injury, it showed a lot of character to come back and keep training. I suggest that you keep training hard (as hard as you can for now) and learning. Work on what you think you need polishing on and you'll get it down. I joined TSD 1 month before their regular testing. I was told i had the option to test one week before. I buckled down and learned what i needed to learn. During the test, i messed up once or twice... but i had the drive and the enthuisaism, they promoted me and i know am good (not great) at what i am supposed to know... Good Luck... -
Which is more popular TSD or TWD?
Knifehand007 replied to Knifehand007's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Just out of curiousity, where did/do you train TSD? I train at the PKSA Karate School in Grand Blanc Michigan, i am currently a TSDMDK student... -
Yeah, but it looks good. From a purely discipline standpoint, it is really amazing. And it may teach you some things, it is rooted in fundementals... but that raises a good question... When do you know/learn which styles are good for SD and which ones aren't. I've learned a lot of things in TSD, but nothing i would risk using in a fight... but i know i have a lot to learn (understandment of the century).... but the question remains...

Educated MAists know... How can we expect outsiders to understand Forms/Katas? Or why we do them? Or sparring? or the question!.... if you are in "karate" (not everything is karate, moron) to learn how not to fight, why are they teaching you to fight? Subquestion, Why do you fight eachother if you don't want to fight..... AHHHH. DADDY I WANT OFF THE RIDE!!! MAKE IT STOP!!! Composure......Calm, peace and serenity in all seriousness, I do believe that if you take the time to learn a style, get your facts straight. If you are a traditionalist, learn the language of the style... (good luck with the russian style... you might need a little vodka to help with that one, Just Kidding!!). Stop the spread of stigma and enjoy your training...because it is your training, not theirs... if you want them to learn, recruit them and then educate them

Strength of a punch....born to be a puncher?
Knifehand007 replied to Sinar89's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
http://www.dimmak.net/points.htm There are four possible pressure points located on the arm... maybe you triggered one. The "dead" Feeling comes from sensory loss and localized pressure. Some people are born with inherent abilities, but i don't think the perfect punch is one of them. Metaphsyically speaking, some people are "senstive" to rhythm of others... Meaning you may have the ability to subconsciencely hone in and strike trigger points kinda the same way a compass points north. With MAists, they have stronger rhythms and they are able to pick up on those rhythms more accurately... OR you just got lucky... -
Which is more popular TSD or TWD?
Knifehand007 replied to Knifehand007's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Rock On! TSD is the only MA i got serious in. My first MA was a generic karate school. I was 8 and fat.... but now i'm 19 and still fat... but i got the discipline to stick with it this time!! The Dans in TSD are also really cool. Except the one that kicked me in the face.... oh i'll get him...::shakes fist:: (jk - A little passive aggressive) The forms are cool, sparring is great, and i'm actually learning it and i feel great afterwords... -
I need some help... I have a tournament coming up in march. It is my first one and i am competeing in sparring. I've only sparred twice, both were black belts (i'm yellow, i'll be orange when i compete). Is there any tips for sparring that you can offer me? I'm not too sure on the rules. any advice would be great.

from a self-defence perspective, a martial artist will have an advantage. even a little training goes a long way, from a confidence perspective. From a lifestyle perspective, every Cho Dan i talk to about martial arts is on a quest to better themselves. Kick higher, punch harder, more accurately. Its a discipline.

age limit
Knifehand007 replied to okc_deputy16's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Quite personally, I train for self. When i am standing a front stance whilst, the little ones just kind of stand there, dumbfounded; i think to myself, "while the instructor corrects them, my muscles are getting stronger, i'm getting tougher, my stance is getting lower; i'm getting better." When i go to test, i'll be that much better, and the Som Ba Nims will notice me all the better. The people who aren't getting it, will eventually get it (hopefully) because it is easier to do right then to do it wrong. -
Hey everyone, my name is a Ian. I'm from Michigan. I study Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan. I'm a yellow belt, i test for orange next week. I'm 19. I've been in TSD for 5 months now. My first tourament is next month and i am competing in sparring. any advice would be helpful.
