Also in a self-defense situation, it looks better for you after beating someone up that you were only hitting them with you palms than with your fists. At least to the layman.

If you train to fight you'll be a better fighter. You can do that with a heavy bag, a sparring partner or even kata. Karate also does sparring too, its not all kata. Whatever style and school you choose, look into it and try a free class if they'll let you so you can see if you like what you see.

A style is a tool. A hammer is not better than a screwdriver, except when you need to drive a few nails.

How much does size really matter?
psychospaz replied to Stold's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Okay, who would you rather end up in a fight with, Shaquille O'Neal or Jet Li. I'd take my chances with Jet Li personally... -
What style you teach?

Haha, that's like how I spar in class, but then I usually win too.

Sniper School?

exactly 20 here, at least till april

hmm, I dont mind being bigger than most everyone I spar against. Seems to be a bit of an advantage. If they wanna do infighting, I can always just start grappling, and being stronger and more skilled in that also doesnt hurt.

what would you do?
psychospaz replied to Shootfighter's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
yeah, there's tons of ways to counter and tons of ways they could vary the shoot to make certain counters ineffective. i need to find somewhere to spar shooters, seems like fun. -
what would you do?

A really slow front kick!! I haven't sparred/fought any shootfighters really tho. Would a knee work as well as the reverse punch (which id prolly go for) or is that smothered by the shooting? -
You speak for Kano but not Choi. Your call i guess...

Body Types
psychospaz replied to three60roundhouse's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
lots of martial arts tho were developed in certain goegraphical regions by people on similar body types, so they optimize techinique based on certain body types, so some body types would be optimal for certain styles. now if you take what u want from the style and use what works for you thats not a problem. -
what about the fact that the bigger stronger person can also do your leg and groin kicks with more power and range, or does one assume that they're just mindless brawlers. only shorter weaker people think when fighting right?

in general id say potential is about even and unless you're a world class fighter, good men and good women are both good. now this is assuming you mean women and men of the same size. i dont think a woman who is 5'6 and 130lbs is gonna take out a 6'4 220lbs (both pure muscle) guy with the same amount of training. theres an obvious advantange that comes with size. techniques can be used with large size too and are usually more powerful. btw, im not accounting for magical chi and stuff that can let the small women break steel beams with her mind... for pure fighting abilities id have to say men have the advantange. more pure strength, more drive to fight and etc. this of course is refering to the best, so overall the point is moot.

Comparing genders and making absolute statements is as stupid as arguing the truth of any stereotype. It mostly comes down to the individual, although from what ive seen, the very best men seem to be somewhat athletically superior to the women of the same class. There may be women who are better but i havent really seen it (cept for those old school east german women from the olympics - but they had so many drugs to make em like men, i dont really consider them "women"
