  1. I don't think it is disrespectful, but our opinions don't really matter here, it's up to your current Sensei. I wanted to start up training in Shaolin Kung-Fu one, and I asked the instructor if I had to quit Kempo, he told me it would be disrespectful not to, and my Kempo instructor said it would be fine to cross-train a little bit. So, as you could see, it defers from instructor to instuctor. If you do end up cross-training, don't say something along the lines of "we do it differantly...."
  2. I agree with you on that. In order to benefit from kata training one needs to really examine and pick apart their form. I personally practice and train my lower katas and forms to improve them of course, but also to teach myself more about my own art. There is so much to be learned from kata, no matter what rank you are you can teach yourself something new if you try hard enough.
  3. I'ver heard (and felt) palm strikes reinforced with chi, but a closed fist? Someone told me that the muscels tense too much in a closed fist to reinforce it with chi. That's what I've heard, so there's my feedback.
  4. Hello! Welcome to KF!
  5. Grandmaster Cerio will never rest in peace so long as people like this are around. This is a disgrace to Kempo schools everywhere...it sickens me.
  6. I rarely say something like this, but I really hate that school. There is one about a minute from the dojo I attend. The head instructor and a few top students came to my middle school once to do a demo and they pulled me aside cause my gym teacher told them I did karate and they kept tryin to tell me how their school was better (in a very passive, indirect way). Also, in the past year we've had quite a few students from that school come to our dojo complaining about the instructors. I also know that for a while one of the head instructors (a while ago, I no longer hold this particular detail against them) forged Grandmaster Nick Cerio's signature on belt promotion certificaits. However, I can tell you that the style they teach is effective, and if a specific dojo of theirs has a good instructor it would be a pretty good place to train if you want to think about it. Personally, I don't like them, but their style is effective, can't argue with that.
  7. Calm down people!!! I used to get so angry when people mocked my training, now I just shrug it off and walk away. No point in worring about what other people think, it just shows you how ignorant they are.
  8. Oops, sorry, I didn't know that word got filtered.
  9. I agree.....especially in black belt divisions. Besides all the padding there are SOOOOO many rules on contact allowed so it's like a game of who can TOUCH, not hit, TOUCH, who first....it really pisses me off. I almost was disqualified from a match for "excessive contact" and "illegal" face contact against someone who was WEARING A MASK!!!!! I am someone who NEVER questions a senior black belt, but I looked at my center judge and was like "This IS the black belt division, right?" I hate the compitions my school goes to, so many rules.....it drives me CRAZY. I am done with my school's tournaments after this year.
  10. White Tiger Kempo; Lineage: Mitose-Chow-Emperado-Parker-Cerio-Fescina As far as all the similarities, I was under the impression that all the Kempo in America came from Grandmaster Mitose, so it all branches indirectly from him and directly from another Kempo system....or so i believe. Thoughts anyone?
  11. Hey, I practice White Tiger Kempo... Lineage: Mitose-Chow-Emperado-Parker-Cerio-Fescina When you think about it, a lot of modern systems of Kenpo/Kempo came through Ed Parker (I believe, correct me at once if this a false assumption), so in essence, most Kempo practicioners practice Ed Parker's American Kenpo. We have a LARGE family tree, there are so many branches of Kempo...
  12. We use english names and all of the set techniques are incredibly simple, names like Combonation 1, or White Belt Kempo 1, or Front-Two hand grab.... Even our forms are simple english names, 1 Kata, Mantis, Cat 3, White Tiger 1... After all, set techniques are really just to teach principles, the names don't really have to be ellaborate or that much in detail IMO.
  13. Mine is in Kempo, in case you couldn't tell
  14. I recently called my Sensei evil....yeah, lets just say he didn't deny my statement (although I didn't get a chipped bone!)
  15. Great Article Chivalry is certainly not dead, but it is practiced by a minority of people. There was a day in school when we had to go to stations during our gym class to learn about the courses offered next year to us and there were seats set up at one station. I noticed that everyone had a chair except one girl. I got up and told her she could sit down. I didn't think anything of it, but when we went back to the locker rooms to get our stuff a guy asked me if I was gonna ask her out b/c I offered her my seat . I asked him why he would say that and he told me that a guy dosen't do that unless he has an alterior motive. That's just one example of course... Chivalry won't die as long as there are people around who understand the importance of respect. BTW, Drag'n, I have great respect for anyone who makes a decision like that. People have to stand by their principles.
  16. I'm not saying that I'm perfect 24/7, but I really don't see the place for things like that in a MA class. Oh well, I guess I'll wait till i get older... BTW, I'm human too, so I know what you're talking about, but I can sincerely say, I have never thought something like that about anyone WHILE IN CLASS (I have met some of my classmates outside of the dojo however )
  17. Those are both great...thanks for the laugh.
  18. I know what you're saying and it saddens me to hear a MA student say that. Just curious, how old are you? Just so you know, I'm 14. Sorry, i know it's the humor section of the forums, but I can't stand that. Anyway, just so I don't bring down the entire discussion... I pay attention all the time in MA class, it's at school where my mind tends to drift, many times to martial arts. I've had some of my best ideas for possible bunkai application during Math class

  20. Welcome back! It seems we have something in common!
  21. Congradulations! Now the real fun begins! Keep up the comitment and obviously great work!
  22. I don't know enough about either style to get specific, but that dosen't matter. My answer is gonna be the same...it depends on the practicioner's work ethic and training habits.
  23. I must repeat myself, most fights in high school are absolutely unnescesary. Just because someone is picking on you verbally dosen't mean you should fight them. Especially as a MAist. Look at my sig, that quote is something I live my life by. Now, I don't let people push me around, I just make it very clear I don't enjoy someone's behavior and I carry myself with a lot of confidence. People don't mess with me even though I have a rep for not fighting because of this confidence. It will take a lot to get me to fight with someone, especially while I'm still in high school.
  24. Every new memeber at KF should be required to read that...great post. I agree 100%
  25. Cool, Professor Fescina is my master. Did you enjoy training there?
