  1. Is falun gong safe to practise ? Depends if the government of the country you live in has banned it or not .
  2. The skills you learn , such as body hardening and dodging will be relative to the training that you do . Many styles have those types of training with in them (some more than others ) . As far fighting skills , well , that comes down to individual skill most of the time . The more prepared and experienced you are the better chance you have .

  5. 100 % agree . The wrestlers bridge is far and away the best excersize for strengthening the neck muscles and KO prevention . If you are new to this I would suggest a more basic movement to begin with . 1 put the palm of your hand under your chin and press up with your hand and resist with your neck muscles not allowing your head to move . 2 press hand on back of head down and forward and resist as in excersize 1 . 3 press on either side of head . These are isometric movements and should be held for 5 to 10 seconds per rep . If you have any pain while doing these or any other neck excersize... STOP !!!
  6. bags of sand and a backpak are one easy and cheap way to add resistance to any excersize . You can also use chairs and doors if nothing else is available , for pushups , dips and pull ups .
  7. Just a couple ?'s 1 Is the leg work for a boxer the same as it would be for the martial artist ? 2 Are good mornings with weight a good excersize for someone that is new to the excersize ?
  8. Can't answer any of those questions but having read the book (years ago ) I do seem to recall that those weight lifting programs were just a small part of his training was . He did have a ton of other stuff in his workout programs as well .
  9. dips help too . You can also vary the resistance of the push up by elevating the feet or using 1 arm . (lots of other variations too ) .
  10. You seem to run very often . And at a pretty good clip too . I plan on adding that a little later in my progess . Morning workout pull ups - 18 (as many as I could hammer out in one rep ) body weight squats - 364 ( as many as I could hammer out in one rep ) divebomber pushups 94 (starting to get tuckered out ) plank - not very long -need to work on that one lunges -100 lie on floor and question why I just did that - about three min various crunch combos 200 in all Yoga and stretching The plan for tonight is to get back into some basic movement and kata . Has to be lowwer intensity to start as per doctors orders. As for how long Its been 4 weeks tomorrow since the back surgery and things are going great Thanks for bearing with me AO it really does help !! If you are so inclined it would be great if we could keep this up for a bit . Feel free to add your opinions on the work that I do there may be things that I am omitting or whatever . And seeing what another persons workouts are like really helps to put myine in persective .

Yes Today I did 10 min walk (warm up ) 8 inch worm 8 one arm push up 8 pull up 8 one leg squat 50 step up (each leg) 8 catepillar Repeat 8 times (was actually going for 10 ) maybe next time yoga for back for cool down Today was also physio so may not do night routine . Am attemping to regain my strength endurance flexability from before my injury . Was sort of hoping I could use your work outs as a motivator .
  12. Often taught at the higher levels of chinese arts (internal) could also be practiced in other traditions as well but I am not sure . When you loose all that hocus pocus stuff it is really just hitting accupuntre points . Just think of it as a reverse form of accupressure . Can't do that brick trick from Blood Sport or anything else like that . But have studied the applications .

Something I used to do in my work outs . 1 flat bench With enough weight as to only allow 5 reps or so . 2 pull ups add weight if necassary to only allow 5 reps or so . 3 all out flurry punch heavy bag 10 to 30 sec . Repeat ( I used to do 5 to 8 sets but do whatever ) . I love this combo . I used to do other things along with it but I felt gains in strength and endurance when doing this combo for a while .
  14. Find a great teacher ! No matter what the art the teacher will make a huge difference . I am not saying go out and join an art that you have no interest in but make sure you know what the teacher is all about . Some teachers focus on kata or competition or self defence or what ever . Find the the right combo for you and jump in with both feet . Many schools will offer free intro classes so you can see for yourself what you will be getting in to . Good luck !!
  15. I have incorporated alot of his stuff in my rehab and have seen great results . Much quicker results than what you would normally see when it comes to back surgery. This mornings workout 10 MIN walk - warm up 20 knee hugs 20 chinnies 20 V-Ups 20 russian twists 20 divebomber push ups 50 squats Repeat to a total of three times 15 MIN yoga for back - cool down Depnding on how the back holds up will probably do Tai Chi and/or yoga tonight . I know , nothing like what you do but I am working on it . What was your routine like ?
  16. Which books do you have ? I have the "underground guide to warrior fitness " and like it alot . Lots of great stuff in there . Just wondering what his other books are like .

  18. Actually it sounds more like a Ross Enamait workout . He is more of a body weight and calistetic guy with sandbags and medecine balls thrown in for added resistance . His workouts are real butt kickers . His workouts are great but not for the feint of heart . I do like cross fit as well . They have great workouts Too ! Just a different approach.
  19. Hard to pick which would be best as alot of it comes down to the indivdual and the skill level of the fighter . WC has great qualities that would translate well into a combat situation . Speed striking be the most obvious . ( often a WC student will overwelhm with speed} From my experiences with advance students of WC standing directly infront of then and trading strikes is not advised . MT students are very often tough as nails as a result of the method of trainning they use and possess great power in round house kicks and are ussually considered experts in infighting as knee and elbow strikes can be wicked at close range . In my experience their clinch is not a place you wish to be very often . ( I learned that one the hard way ) And last but certainly not least TSD is often mistaken for kickboxing in a street fight with some comparisons to Karate . It is a sister art to TKD but focuses more on a balance of hands and feet and from experiences I have had with advanced TSD students you should not expect the huge holes in their defence that can sometimes be found in the fancy high kicks of TKD . If I am not mistaken one of the more famous students of TSD is Chuck Norris . All three are amazing when done at high levels . The one advantage that I do see is that ( and this depends on the person ) MT can be learned at a quicker pace to higher levels . Partly because of the brutally physical training and partly because there are really only a handfull of techniques that are used in the system .
  20. Um ... Ever thought of contact training with a partner . Of course I have seen and even do some medicine ball stuff and there are probably more than a few of us that have been wacked with a bo or kendo stick by sensei but I have never found anything more effective than just plain old taking and trading shots . If you have a good partner you will toughen eachother up real fast . Just don't go all out too quickly . We actually had a drill that was affectionatly called " the bruise thing " .

  22. I suppose it depends on what you mean by "your own style " . Over the years I have personally added forms , drills and specific techniques and/or applications of them that do not existist entirely within the systems that I have studied . But this only changes my personal expression of the art and does not constitute a new system .

  24. I think that the UFC mostly changed the pure combat fighting systems and sport combat more than anything else . And in my opinion is a great thing . Those who wish to train for the above mentioned purposes now have a comprehensive and battle tested avenue in which to follow . These systems practise trainning methods that are speciffically geared towards their goals . 20 years ago a person wishing to learn to fight in a UFC fashion would have had to goto many different schools and then was basically left on his own to put these things together and test the viability of it . Now we have many schools that teach combonations of muay tai judo ju jitsu and others in one system and a tough testing ground in which you can test and advance your skills . To me that is progress . Not to say that there are not traditional systems that are comprehensive and battle tested because obviously there are . Being the traditionalist that I am I will leave that other stuff to those who prefer it and I will study the traditions and culture that have been passed down to me by my honored teachers . I firmly believe that there are many people who still relish the taditional and from what I see there are many avenues to train in this way as well . Now for the " too deadly to spar or compete " thing . I think that it not so much the technique that is so dangerous but the practitioner that is not controlled enough to use it that is the danger .
  25. Best to keep it simple in the beginning . In my opinion it is far better to have a few simple techniques that you drill with partner over and over until proficient enough to be useful in a sparring situation than a whole bunch of fancy stuff . There is a big difference in being able to throw a technique into the air and executing an effective technique against a partner . Practice , dilegence and perserverence will be a part of your trainning for as long as you study . Keep at it and good luck
