How long did it take for your black belt
Bretty101 replied to Topic's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
it took me 4.5 years to get my 1st dan (shoulda been 3.5 but i fell out with my instructor). then another 6 years til i took my 2nd dan (could have done it in 2 years but was in no hurry despite training every day) I've been a 2nd dan for 3years and plan to take my 3rd dan around christmas time. I could have been a 4th degree 'master' by now but I really can't see how i will ever master tkd, I train 4 times a week and every lesson i learn more and more and realise my potential. Taekwondo forever, just love it!!! Bretty -
Reverse hook kick
Bretty101 replied to NinjaCloud's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Spinning hook kicks are difficult to coach without seeing you do it. a few pointers though: Sometimes when learning it you try and think about it too much, just throw it and let it go! The position of your standing foot during the kick can really effect your final kicking position try playing your standing leg positioning when you 'land' the kick. Try leaning back more and also leaning forwards more this can totally transform a kick. Initiate the spin with your upper body and arms get your head round to spot the target then transfer that energy into the kicking leg. This can be quite obvious to an opponent but can also totally transform the kick. Try throwing it straight leg all the way round (spinning round house) or throw it our like a reverse side kick then hook it back. Try before you throw the kick turning your lead leg round so your lead heel is pointing at your target, then pivot your body round n let the kick go. Try playing with it there are so many variations and angles, no right or wrong way. Bretty -

TKD - only for tall people?
Bretty101 replied to aefibird's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Have you seen many 6foot tall koreans? Taekwondo is designed for smaller people. Some of the fastest TKD people I've seen are around 5 feet tall and can fight anyone. My master instructor is just over 5foot tall and about 120lbs. you can kick him across the floor and before your leg touches the floor he is right back in your face with really hard punches and kicks. Unbelievably quick!!! Because of him I will never listen when people say they are too small to fight. He can fight and beat almost anyone! Bretty -
Erm no... Gravity is in fact a force, (F=GMm/r^2) this force f you feel as f=mg where m is your mass in kg and g is the gravitational constant. (which for earth is 9.81) as f=ma=mg, a is therefore 9.81m/s/s which is the rate at which all objects fall towards earth regardless of weight. Force is not the result of acceleration. de/acceleration is the result of a force. Try and give me another example of a force resulting from an acceleration... An object continues at rest or uniform motion unless an external force is applied. (Newtons 1st law) It's been 5 years since i learnt this stuff. Some more physics stuff that will do your head in: 1 cubic metre of air weighs about 1.02kg, and the sound of a travelling bullet actually reaches you before the bullet does, so you might actually hear it!

I love these discussions, It is so tricky to apply physics to martial arts. Especially as Jerry says using newtonion pointal physics. I think the key is speed (or velocity) and how you utilise your body weight (mass). These factors we all agree are important. When applying equations it all gets a little tricky as the amount of weight (or mass) in the strike is so variable, and it's motion can be rotational and/or linear. when you throw a punch what is it's mass on impact? your fist, arm or whole body? It all depends on what and how you utilise it. How is force/power connected to acceleration? The equation F=ma is more acurately expressed as a=F/m. Meaning acceleration and deceleration are the result of a force not vice versa (force a result of acceleration.) I did physics at school and even have an engineering degree (I was never any good at english) I wouldn't even start to look at physics too closely. However on the simple basis that mass and velocity are the key to power. I'll try and strike as fast as i can with my whole body and tense on impact to deliver maximum mass at maximum speed. Bretty

Thats weird i'm suffering the exact same thing today as a result of my saturday training. For me It feels like both my hip aDductors are spasming. I think it's cramp bought on from training dehydrated. both my muscles feel part contracted and hurt loads, even walking is difficult. I'm certain it's not an injury cos it's the same in both legs. I've had this before in my calves and I find i get it if i train a muscle really hard when it's been neglected for a while. I think it is you bodies response to over stretching. The muscle is contracted to prevent further/any injury. I know it will go in a couple of days, the weird thing is mine didn't start until 24hours after my training? I find my have eased a lot by sitting in the bath, using warming muscle rubs, really really steady stretching and massage. Bretty

Glucosamine / Chondroitin and tendon cramps in foot ?
Bretty101 replied to EvilTed's topic in Health and Fitness
I have absolutley no research to back up or agree with the taking on more salt to help cramps. It was just something my brother mentioned and he's the kinda person thats usually right about these things. On the other hand my Girlfriends dad is a professor of food science and he won't even touch salt?!?! Hope i didn't mislead anyone, Bretty -
Glucosamine / Chondroitin and tendon cramps in foot ?
Bretty101 replied to EvilTed's topic in Health and Fitness
Sorry didn't get time to read everyone elses replys but had a scan through and agree about the dehydration. I found I dehydrated when using glucosamine and also suffered really bad cramps. And it was true for me that this was really relieved with increase fluid intake. also try consuming a little more salt thats supposed to be good for cramps etc. Bretty -
College Karate Club Recruitment
Bretty101 replied to BryantKarate's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I was elected club president/captain of a large university taekwondo club 3 years ago. Between me and the rest or of the committee we really nailed the recruitment. We intercepted every single student that registered for the university in the first week 40,000+ and made sure every single one was handed a flyer. We also focussed on recruiting females, knowing that if the club was full of girls the men will follow. Between handing out flyers we put up loads of posters with a single picture of somthing cool (charlies angles, buffy vampire slaugher, people doing big kicks, etc) and a note advertising a demonstration and first free lessons. The other cool thing we did was dress up in animal suits with our training suits on top and ran around the university campus giving out flyers and doing sparring and demonstrations. This got everyone talking and showed the club and it's light hearted nature. We managed to recruit over 500 students that year, making the club the universities second largest sports club!!! I know this sounds like we created a McDojo but considering all the students were aged between 20-25 the result is a larger club with a very high standard. Bretty -
Martial Arts Weekend in Birmingham
Bretty101 replied to angelica d's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I went to Seni the year before last, some good demos, Something for everyone/style and loads of cheap gear!!! And is right next to the train station. I can't make it down this weekend. I've got a martial arts ball, squad training and tournament all on consecutive days. Drinking and fighting I don't think seni can match that!! Bretty -
You'll notice Thai/Kick boxers wear them all the time and Boxers wear high ankle boots. This is because when you get a good crack on the chin and your knees go its very easy to sprain an ankle trying to keep upright. I went over on my ankle really badly 18months ago. I'm still aware of it so wear ankle supports if i'm not properly warmed up. Bretty

As i compete as a points fighter i put lot of emphasis on sparring side on. This makes using my rear hand quite tricky and using boxing logic that would be my stronger hand. I therefore train with my stronger hand as my lead hand. and rely on my jab and hook. Unorthodox but it works for me. I my foot work was a bit better I would feel happier throwing my rear hand... one day... Bretty

There's nothing like trying to help someone, then having someone else quote you word for word, scrutinising and disagreeing with everything you say!! Just my opinions, maybe Sevenstar could offer a little more advice. I'm sure we would value and respect his opinions. I never mind being corrected, I'm here to learn. Being friendly and positive is what makes KF such a great place to hang out when i'm meant to be working. So lets hear it SS... Back to the thread. I guess I include aching, soreness and feeling a bit tight all in the same category, which is a big generalisation but I can't see how you can train hard and not suffer from one or the other?!? You can prevent tightness by stretching, reduce aching by flushing out lactic acid (steady warm down) and speed muscle recovery by taking protein. I stick to that. Sweeting, smiling and learning!! There are many plyometric (explosive) exercises you can do to improve your jump height. But to be honest most involve jumping on and off of things and are a bit dull. I find short sprints and running up large flights of steps 1/2/3/4 steps at a time far more easier to include in a training schedule and more beneficial. The thing that has improved my jump height beyond any training method was to losing about 20lbs in body weight. Bretty

overall best korean martial art
Bretty101 replied to JLee's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
The only Korean art I've done is Taekwondo. But when you say "overall" I can honestly say although Taekwondo doesn't contain all elements which are needed to be a "complete" martial artist. However It is a very open minded martial art and one which allows you to incorporate other styles very easily. IMO a good base martial art but not the best martial art. -
I always want to ache abit the next day after training, It tells me I've "stretched" myself either in endurance, strength or flexibility. Each time I take myself a little further I know the ache is telling my brain my body needs to develop/repair/improve or grow and with a good diet it will. After a good work out you will ache though there are several things you can do to reduce this and with further training It will take more effort to achieve an ache. (I say ache like its a good thing ) Try to warm down and do a steady stretch at the end or each lesson. this should prevent the build up of lactic acid (,the result of using energy stored) in the muscle. Allow time for your muscles to recover between training sessions. Try eating Protein, when I do heavy weight training I generally can't move the next day unless I take a good source of protein. Pain bad, ache good!! No Ache, No gain!!! Bretty

Who has pulled off Butterfly Kicks?
Bretty101 replied to Ironberg's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Was playing around with a new Butterfly kick variation last night. Do a one handed cart wheel first then do a second one no handed with your legs almost as high and body parralell to the floor, looks cool!!! Apparently for a big guy (6'2 205lbs) I shouldn't be able to do it as well as i can! Bretty -
Boxers are ace at moving their heads, bobbing and weaving really good. But their centre of graviy hardly moves and there is always a big gap between their elbows. Keep firing the push front kicks and side kicks straight down the middle. I've fought many boxers who struggle against these kicks and because they are totally new to them they just don't know what to do. As said previously don't even try to go toe-to-toe and if thy get in close and turn up the head fire off a big back kick down the middle. Bretty

Who has pulled off Butterfly Kicks?
Bretty101 replied to Ironberg's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I would have thought the butterfly kick would be easier to pull off on a solid floor rather then a trampoline. I can do it on both sides fairly well usually my trailing leg goes higher then my lead leg which doesn't look so good, I can also do it pretty much vertical like an aerial. The trick is to start with your body bent forward and parrallel to the floor, then start your flat spin dip your head down and spring up with the first kick. Its a nice kick, I want a Butterfly twist but can never find the floor to land and don't have access to a nice matted floor to practice. They look ace though. I was gonna say it's just practice, but i think you would do better to watch someone who can do it and get them to break it down for you. Bretty -
I really can't see martial arts ever becoming more popular then they were in the 70's and 80's, Thanks to Bruce Lees films. I think it was when martial arts were at there best. I've got videos of massive tournaments and huge squads of top fighters. I see martial arts popularity as a positive thing. My biggest hate though is seeing celebrities 'trying' to do martial arts in films badly. For example why didn't they get a martial artist to play buffy the vampire slaugher? (just try and find one picture on the internet of SMG doing a martial arts move!!!) and the crescent kicks celebrities try and do, who are they kidding? Bretty
