But what about timeframes; how long do i lift for? how many times do i lift? do i lift everyday? I basically have no prior knowledge of this type of thing before. I am but a mere novice. Thank you

I'm sorry but i have no idea what a door jam is?

My forearms are skinny to the bone; i can fit most of my fingers round my wrist so i'm going to lift some weights to make them bigger. I have decided to use things at home for my weights as i can't afford to buy them, so a few bricks from the garage or bottles of liquid will do! Thing is, i don't know how many 'lifts' to do or when to stop lifting them. Does the burning mean you stop or keep going? And how often do i do the excercises for and when do i stop? P.S. I'm 29 so not a boy who's still to grow! Thank you

Pat Morita (Mr. Miyaga) Dies -- Sad
Highler replied to liquidkudzu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I remember the scene when mr miyagi and daniel san were out on the boat and daniel is practicing his balance and mr miyagi rocks the boat and makes him fall while shouting 'balance daniel san' and bursts into laughter Well i found it funny RIP -
I had a lightweight gi and wanted a heavyweight so ended up getting a 16 oz canvas gi and it is solid - like cardboard! It's not as good as i thought though - it is tougher and can withstand a lot but it feels like luggage i have to carry about, especially when soaked in sweat.

I will be getting a heavy punchbag very soon and looking at what's on sale, I have the option of 4, 5 and 6 ft bags. I will be using a wall bracket in the garage to hang this on. So, what size of bag do you all use? I was thinking of getting the biggest bag as there would be more areas to aim for? What do you think?

You'll find some of these in the downloads section of https://www.tska.co.uk but you need to register to view them. Quite good though

So it's not a bad thing then? I was worried about doing a lot of exercises like squats which might make them worse

When i bend the knees a lot, say for shiko dachi, they creak on the way back up. They don't feel bad or anything, they just make this weird creaking noise a bit like the noise you can make when cracking your knuckles Anyone had this before?

I am looking for a book called Kobe Osaka Story by Tommy Morris. It's from 1979. I can't find it anywhere and wondered if anyone knows where i can get it? Thanks

Always wondered what a 3rd dan does for 4th dan, 4th dan for 5th dan etc. Is it just the usual kata, sparring etc or do higher grades get their dans for services to the art or something like that? any other requirements? Anyone know?

Interesting - I've never seen red placed in such a junior position before. More often it precedes brown, which was the case in my old ISKF Shotokan dojo, as well as in my current JKR Shindo Jinen-Ryu dojo. (My Shito-Ryu dojo was old school: Just white, yellow, green, brown, and black, with tests once a year...) In our school red is the first belt (9th kyu) then yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown 1, 2 & 3, black

That looks much more comfortable than the normal cups. Where did you buy it as i didn't see that option on the website? Cheers

Neko Ashi Dachi - Weight Distribution and Applications
Highler replied to Shorin Ryuu's topic in Karate
I haven't really looked at using this stance in sparring yet as i have enough difficulty moving through this stance in the katas. For example, in pinan shodan (heian nidan) when you do 3 shuto ukes before the spearhand i always seem to end up in standard stance as all my weight comes through to the front foot when i step in and don't know how to control the weight when moving forward from one cat stance to the next Back to the drawing board! -
Sounds like a daft question i know, but after reading a post from Shorin Ryuu about the importance of practicing yourself i started wondering the best way. I don't want to be superfit or have big bulging muscles so i'm not interested in doing weights, sit-ups, press-ups etc and want to focus on my karate techniques. So, is it as simple as keep doing at home what i do at the dojo? Basic punches and kicks, combinations, kata etc? I don't have a punchbag so should i just kick and punch away in front of the mirror? Any ideas appreciated
