  1. LOL wow this thing got awfully long.... I guess it's like asking "Do you like having friends in martial arts?" LOL....
  2. I don't know, I keep hearing all these people diss TKD, but then I read in all these different MA books the TKD is the most popular MA.......????????
  3. Ja, it's interesting at my dojo..... my sensei started MAs while in the army, and their army instructers came and went, so he got a sampling of a lot of different styles there. When he got out he got his black belt in shorin ryu karate. Now, he teaches us the traditional shorin ryu katas, but it's interesting during sparring and pre-arranged sparring, when he'll randomly mix moves from kung-fu, karate, TKD, aikido and jujitsu, and sometimes all 5 at once! Hahahahaha.... I want to train more in jujitsu and TKD when I get older and more advanced in shorin ryu, but I want to keep training simultaneously in shorin ryu, to keep my roots, and because it's my favorite.
  4. I definitely see the problem of dating within one's school, but personally, MAs are such a big part of my life that I can't imagine marrying someone not in MAs. I mean.... yeah, marrying someone who didn't understand that devotion to MAs would just be..... difficult. Hahahahahahahahhaa. It's funny cuz most ppl talk about marrying into their own race/religion or whatever, but I'd like to marry into my own style, b/c whenever I meet an MA guy from a different style, he always starts bashing shorin ryu, and I don't think I could live with that. Haha.
  5. Ja, me neither. I get frustrated/angry/sad, and go to class and let it all out in kiais and on the bags. Haha... I'm fairly obsessed; it came on gradually. I started out because my brother was in it and it looked like fun, and by the time I was a purple belt (2nd rank) I was starting to get obsessed. I've gotten more and more into it.... starting out going to 2 hours a week and currently spending 10 hours a week at the dojo! And only half that time is training, the other half I help out with the kiddie class, holding bags and stuff. Does anybody have parents that aren't appreciative of MAs? My mom rolls her eyes and says I'm exaggerating or being overly dramatic when I say I'm gonna do karate for the rest of my life. She expects me to quit after I get my black belt in a year or so. I keep telling her that although black belt is my current goal, isn't the end-all to karate goals. She thinks I'll have successfully mastered the art when I'm a sensei, and then I'll settle down or smg. I tell her I'm going to continue karate during school and stuff, and she's like "Well, that would be nice, wouldn't it, but it probably won't happen. You'll be too busy in college." Ha. When I try to explain to her that I want to perfect myself and etc, she's like "that's nice dear." Grrr....
  6. I would go with karate. For one thing, you can use the art in self defense when you don't have a weapon (face it, they won't let you go into an airport or movie theater with a weapon), and also, some karate schools teach weapons to their students. In this way, you would get a bit of weapons training which you could then improve on by joining Kendo when you move out.
  7. Yeah, a pen and paper would be nice...only I'd ask for like 20 sheets of paper...I would be writing. I always thought it was funny in movies, people get a last request, and they're like "can I have a light?" LOL.
  8. Well THAT'S the understatement of the year!!!! I wanna do that!!!
  9. So you don't hurt your pride, eh? LOL.
  10. I was just thinking of my other post.... what would you ask for, if you were about to be executed and you only one last request? I'm not sure what I would ask for..... Can I do my favorite kata one last time? LOL, no actually I would probably ask for a priest if I hadn't seen one already.
  11. Hahahahahahahahaaaaa! Gotcha! By next year, I will be going to college, working, and paying rent for living at home. My my birthday is coming up.... my question is what should I ask for from my parents that will be useful later in my life when I am on my own (or paying my share of rent/gas/electricity)? Money, a car, and credit cards don't count. I don't want to ask just for stuff like CDs and movies, but I can't think of anything useful.
  12. Yeah, I've been in some theaters where the seats are super-comfy, but I'm in a small town, and the seats SUCK. No head rests! LOL I don't get popcorn and soda either (I can't stand popcorn) but I included anyways just for the sake of comparing the outrageous cost of movie food (that I don't like) and food from my own house.
  13. I like going to the movies just to get out and go somwhere, but get videos a lot more often. I rent movies usually once a week, but only go to the theater once every couple of months. I figure it like this: Movies Movie itself -- $5.50 Popcorn&soda-- $7 $12.50 total, plus the time and gas for a 30 minute round-trip, not to mention waiting in lines, sitting in uncomfortable seats, and not being able to pause the show. Videos $2.50 a video at my favorite rental place (and 2 for 1 on Wednesdays), $4 for a gallon of ice cream (which I like MUCH more than popcorn! Yummy), 3 minutes from home, I can exercise, or lay on the floor, couch, bed, or recliner while watching it; I can pause it, and I can watch it as many times as I like in 3 days. Renting movies rocks.
  14. LOL, you thought he was a white belt?
  15. I'm sorry, I meant "you" to be a general term for all martial artists.
  16. That's not quite so bad, on the condition that your old belt was already so worn that it broke when you tied it. But then again, isn't the whole point of getting a new belt the fact that it's new? LOL. My sensei's first black belt is all white but a small strip in the middle. He got a new belt because that one was so old and frayed so much. His newer one still has signs of wear and tear though. He's been a BB for 30 years, and an instructor in his dojo for 20 yrs.
  17. I totally agree. Anyone who keys their belt is being disrespectful the rank and recognition belonging to all black belts.
  18. Whoa........ 8 ) with no space = sunglasses smilie! LOL!
  19. I'm supposed to take an antibiotic, and now have to drink this yucky, pinky kid stuff b/c I can't swallow pills. (The pills couldn't be cut, crushed, or chewed.) Does anybody have any swallowing suggestions? I've practiced all these ways with tiny candy, and it still doesn't work: 1) Put the pill on the tip of my tongue, took a swig and tilted my head back. 2) Put the pill on the back of my tongue, took a drink and tilted head forward. 3) Put the pill on the back of my tongue, took a drink and tilted head back. 4) Put the pill on the tip of my tongue, took a swig and tilted my head 5) Filled mouth with water and dropped pill in. 6) Filled mouth with water, dropped in pill, gargled. 7) Put pill in mouth, gulped water. Chewed food, put pill in that, swallow. ^And many other ways. I can't psych myself out because there's nothing to psych myself out of. I'm not afraid of swallowing pills; I desperately wish I could swallow them. Argh, help!
  20. I zone myself out. I don't focus my eyes on anything at all, and just... well, I don't know how else to explain it, but yeah, I zone myself out. LOL. Ignore absolutely everyhting around you... people, noises, everything. Concentrate completely on your kata. I get so into it that I forget about the people watching me.
  21. I usually try not to mention that I do karate, unless I am interested in being friends with the person I am talking to. In that case I give them my email address, which is karatechick@.... LOL so that kind of gives it away. I used to practice my katas in the park when my brother would play baseball. It was boring sometimes, so I'd get all into my katas, and all sorts of people would drive by "hiyah"ing and etc. "You go girl!" And other such comments. I ignore them, or I laugh. Sometims you can't help but laugh. I remember one kid asked me if I was doing Kung Fu, and I said no, it' was karate. He replied with "Kung Fu is better." And I was just like, "Well, whatever you say buddy." He was like 10.
