I use the Kenpo Master Form.

I say dojo for the already mentioned reasons, but when I practice solo, I go out to hte pier here and use the end which is a 30'x30' slab of concrete surrounded by water. The effect of the slow waves and solitude just cannot be explained. There is no way I'm stressed after a workout like this.

what to do against a opponet wildly swinging?

um...nick, if that was directed towards me, perhaps I'm misunderstood...as far as the bats/sticks/knives go, there is only one defense...RUN FORREST RUN! -

back to the original question of the flailing idiot...I would either shoot in and take him to the ground and start to snap things if he didn't stop the assault, or simply block a few and knock him down...you could even wrap his arms up to get his attention in a quick way. -
professional instructor resources...
Mr. Mike replied to tommarker's topic in Instructors and School Owners
http://www.masuccess.com/ http://www.napma.com/ We use these two resources as well as a host of others. I've found the MAIA program to be HIGHLY beneficial. The monthly packet includes training tips, management tips, and a host of other invaluable information in cd and DVD format. I hold MAIA in a very high regard. That is not to take anyting away from napma either, but MAIA has a much more user friendly format. good luck and congrat's on your decision. -
I would also wait for them to commit. But only if it is unavoidable. If it came down to it, and if a lethal weapon was involved, I may make the first move, since the mere presence of the weapon aludes to the attacker's intent.

jackie chan...bruce lee can't even defend himself anymore assuming both are alive, my money is on Mr. Lee. -
just work past your tired point every time. Each time you will go a bit further. I've built my stamina to a pretty decent level for a guy my size in the past year. When I walked in the school for the 1st time, I weighed almost 360lbs. That was in April...now I go in the low 280's. One thing I've noticed after all that hard work is that I have way more stamina than most of the smaller psople in class...when they are about to fall over, I'm asking for more. And recoop time is way down too...I only need to rest for a couple of seconds before I want to go again. Just keep at it, and go a bit longer and harder each time. If we stop and rest when we get tired, we don't help ourselves...we need to push past that. hope I helped some.

kenpo vs. boxing

very well put indeed. -
almost disqualified for head contact...I gave up more points than I ended up with...argh. Then I got a warning for defending a guy's sidekick with a slip and grab/throw...he told me after that it was the first time anybody ever did that...usually they try to block it...that was the 2nd time he kicked me...the 1st time hurt like heck. Took 4th in sparring...kinda salty about it because I should have been more disciplined. Oh well. That 4th place sits behind my 1st and 2nd place trophies... as a reminder to behave myself

depends...if it is informational, or concentration time...no. if we are doing line drills, or hard and fast work, then why not? That is for our Kenpo classes, the Combat Hapkido classes have no music, nor do the grappling classes. Then again, we aren't a classical school.

if you visit https://www.karateconnection.com you will get a brief overwiew of tape testing and how it works, doens;'t work, etc. it is the IKCA curriculum. I have trained with an individual who wqas taking the video courses, and he knew the curriculum...the biggest downfall was waiting for the tape to come back with the corrections on it instead of having an instructor immediately there to correct it. But if you have no other alternative, I would say for the cost involved, go for it.

if it works, go for it. I wouldn't buy into it unless you were able to take at least a couple of weeks of free classes...just to get the idea of if it would work for you. Go and watch a couple of classes before deciding on anything...watch the advanced classes also if you can. There are a couple of things that make me leery about the school just from reading through the site and bios, but you should be the one to make the decisions. The style taught doesn't seem to be the Ed Parker's American Kenpo that I study. From the commercials on the site, it seems to be a homogolation of traditional kung fu, grappling, freestyle karate. That is not to say that it isn't what you may be looking for...I wouldn't discount the idea of attending this school jsut because it doesn't seem to fit me. By all means, give it a shot...as well as other schools in your area. The way I see it, if you are looking at making a several-year, several thousand dollar investment, you should research you r options...look at it this way, you wouldn't buy a car from one dealership just because they saiy they are the best would you?

Shaving...irritable skin (girls answer too, please)
Mr. Mike replied to Mr. Mike's topic in General Chat
I usually wear a mustache/goatee, or just a goatee, which is just fine with the inst. But, I was thinkng of going totally clean, just for the perception of the general public. I might just have to start shelling out some bigger bucks on ther products is all...I've noticed that after springing for the top dollar shower gels, body washes, etc, I have little proplems with dry skin....maybe I jsut have to follow that same advice all around...argh, and I'm a cheap buzzard too -
I guess I have the wrong picture painted in my mind...I'm thinking of a person just lined up with you flailing his arms all over the place...still, the breaks would definitely let him know to coll it a bit...then again, you beter get the hell outta dodge after teh break, or you'll have alot of explaining to do.

dating type question here...long, but with good reason
Mr. Mike replied to Mr. Mike's topic in General Chat
So, her car wouldn't start this morning, and I asked her if she had a ride...she asked if I would stick around for a bit just in case...well, why wouldn't I??? it turned out to be her battery. So, I gave her car a jump, and I asked her about coffee this morning. She said she was sorry, but she couldn't. So I told her that I was't kidding with what I said about dinner earlier last night(she's scheduled constantly, and I told her that she makes it extremely difficult for a guy to take to dinner. She said, 'I know' and turned all kinds of red and proceeded to go on rounds). So, she fianlly said that she would be taking a few days off soon, and I thought she was totally brushing me off. Then she said, 'well, I guess you want my number?' OF COURSE!!! I told her why not, I mean that seems to be the logical progression. So she proceeded to write it down, and I asked if she was busy tonight, and she said 'no, give me a call' WHHOOTT!!! SCORE! So, then she says 'I was wondering when you were going to stop playing around with all the flirting, and just ask.' Hoo boy.... She was getting bugged by all the girls there about asking me out, and she just wasn't going to because the last time she did that, the guy totally blew her off and avoided her...so I said, "I don't think I could avoid you if I wanted..." she just smiled, and thanked me for getting her car running. And I said I would call her tonight...she said she'll be waiting. All I wanted for Xmas was my 2 front teeth...I got a whole lot more. btw, not that it matters, but she studied some Kenpo, and is quite good on her feet from what I can tell with the bit of goofing off that we get into once in a while...the girls all call me things like 'Michael-san' and karate kid...they give me good ribbing. ok...we go from here. thanks guys. -
I'd say if he's throwing horizontal punches wildly, he won't be in a fighting stance, but more square with you, so in that case, I'd block, snap kick the groin, and if that doesn't stop him, give him a shot to the neck, maybe another kick to the groin, and if he's really persistant, either trap an arm and throw him and let him know not to get up, or take off running...or you could trap and arm and break or take out a knee, which should really put a damper on his festivities. man, that's one hell of a run-on sentence.

yeah, I'm going to give it a shot. My biggest issue is that I know I'll get a yes, and I feel like I'm jumping into cold water...kinda scares me. thanks for the advice. -
What art is better for street fighting?
Mr. Mike replied to Sinar89's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
and I thought I was the only one who felt that way about Kenpo! Good to hear similar experiences. I have to concur with most everything in your post...right down to the part of not wanting to be in the situation...5yrs ago, I would have welcomed the chance...not anymore...again, maybe jsut getting old. -
Ok, so what do you guys do for razor burn? I absolutely hate shaving. I'm usually a two times a week guy, but my position at my school suggests that I have a professional appearance, clean shaven being part of that. I've tried all the standby stuff, like gillete creams, forget about generic...I've used all manners of gels, including a pretty smelling one with jasmine and a cool purple label...uh...Skintimates it was, and didn't work so well. I've used all of the required after shaves with no alcohol and lanolin and other crap that is supposed to soothe skin. So after figuring out that the creams maybe aren't my problem, i moved to the razors. I've gone throughthe gillette snesor, the mach 3, the mach3 turbo, the mach 3 yada, yada and yada, I've used the four blade with lubri strips, I've used all the generic ones, I've even used the women's razor's(which as you can imagine makes for one hell of an explanation fest when I have ladies at the houseand I tell them I'm single and they see the whole le femme fatale setup), I seem to be having the best results right now with the Lady Bic Two Blade(I think it is the Persona), and no real problems...until last night. I shaved before work, and a couple of hours into my shift it felt like somebody lit my face on fire and tried to put it out with a hatchet! I've also been using a high-end body wash with cocoa and shea butter(which I use to help with my infernal dry skin, and two showers a day just aggravates the hell out of it) and making lather out of it, and this seems to work ok(better than the above mentioned gels). So, what the hell is my query, you ask??? Simple, I'd like some tips from others aobut what works. I have a moderately oily skin-type, if that might factor in, and usually quite sensitive. Please don't reccomend using an electric, as I simply do not like them...I've used one before and it felt like I shaved with 87 octane and 200 grit sandpaper. So what do you do?
